Holiday Face-Off: Resistance 2 vs. Gears Of War 2

While there are plenty of hot titles scheduled to release over the next few months, none are hotter than Resistance 2 for the PlayStation 3 and Gears of War 2 for the Xbox 360. This is gonna be one hell of a holiday showdown.

Both are shooters, yes; but one is a true-blue FPS while the other utilizes a third-person, over-the-shoulder mechanic that works exceedingly well. The original Gears of War was an easy Game of the Year nominee and winner while Resistance: Fall of Man was the best PS3 launch title…by a long shot. And at E3 this year, the attendees were wowed by the release of several new gameplay videos for Insomniac's ambitious project, which appears to be bigger and better in just about every possible respect. At the same time, everyone is expecting nothing short of brilliance with GeoW2, and the Xbox 360 still has the lead in terms of an established user base. Perhaps the most intriguing aspect of this particular head-to-head contest is that these two titles are exclusive to one particular platform; that's a damn rare thing these days. As the third-party exclusive is borderline extinct, we have to turn to first (or second)-party teams for exclusive projects.

So of course, the big question is, which one? Well, it's nearly impossible to make that decision. It may be a no-brainer for FPS fans who still refuse to embrace even the best third-person gameplay, but for those who simply want an unbelievable experience, there may not be a definitive answer. We can say that Resistance 2 is yet another reason to own the PS3, as if MGS4 wasn't enough of a reason a few months back. As for the 360, which seems to have a lighter holiday lineup than Sony, GeoW2 will easily be the biggest exclusive 2008 title. The PS3 will also get a huge boost from LittleBigPlanet , MotorStorm: Pacific Rift , and SOCOM: Confrontation , but the Resistance sequel should set the tone. The detail appears amazing for both games, the gameplay should be spot-on, and the rest may come down to personal preference regarding story, atmosphere, and general style. As for online, GeoW2 will be gigantic, but it'll be tough to top Resistance 2 's 60-player extravaganza, especially with the free Network.

Yeah, those who don't know us just figure we're using this as an excuse to promote the PS3 game over the 360 game, but that's not what we're about at PSXE. As far as this writer is concerned, it's all about playing the best of the best, and no matter how I break this contest down…I just can't come up with a winner. I refuse to recommend one game over the other, and all I can really say is this: I'm thankful to have two awesome games coming out at about the same time, and I really don't care they're on two different platforms. I suppose I can say I want Resistance 2 just a bit more because I think it'll be longer than GeoW2 and more worth my $60, but I'm not even entirely sure that'll be true. So if you're torn, I'm sorry I wasted your time, but I can't help you. Get both. 🙂

R2 owns, Ben. Everyone knows that. Is R2 going to fill 45 Gigs? Thats what I heard and if thats true well … its very sad for GoW2 then =(

In terms of what has changed from the first to the second installment, R2 most likely takes the lead. But because Gears is just so much friggin fun, it's a close race. From what I have seen so far, Gears2 looks identical to the first, but is that a bad thing? The gameplay is definitely spot on and so are the graphics. The story I never really got into, but in this case I don't even care. The first Resistance wasn't that great of a story either imo.

So I really have no clue. I do hope the 360 takes another drop in price by the holiday, but that might not happen since it did already. If I had a 360 tho, both of these titles would be at the top of my list, right on top of LBP and Bioshock(PS3). Forgot about Fable2 as well… that'd be up there somewhere too.

I'm very excited about those games, I'm getting both of them, and until I have played both I can't give my opinion.

I hated the online part for GeoW (too many rude people over XBL) and loved every piece of RFOM (my first PS3 game).

I'll be playing both, and if you can, you have to do it.

But, first on my shooters holiday list is Socom, I'm loving every shoot in the game and has that old Socom feeling and a beautiful tactical gameplay. Something that neither R2 or GeoW2 have.

The only game ive ever really played on xbl is halo 3, and the people on there seem to be way more mature than the average psn user, at least in my experience. I would like to get both of these games, but there are so many others i want that I might have to settle for just R2 to save on cash.

R2 has a lot more positives going for it than GeOW2. storyline, 60 online, excellent visuals. But somehow i'm edging towards GeOW2 for the simple reason that i like the cover system thts used. and also for the fact that GeOW was awesome on PC with all settings set to high. i'll definitely be downloading GeOW2 for PC when it comes out. 😛 as for resistance2, i guess i'd have to skip R2 and wait for KZ2 to come out.

Ben you run a playstation website why do you report on xbox games? you talk up the shitbox like it is the ps3's equal when really it will be dead in a year or two gears 2 will be awsome but it is also the limit as far as the 360 can go focus on the positives of owning a ps3 you sound like an xbot that has realized the ps3's potential but wont admit that the ps3 is far beyod the 360

I'm sure both will be good

Though I'm siding with Resistance since I find it more engaging more creative.

The kinds of weapons in Resistance is something special.

And not to mention how every aspect(both story and online) are very deep and well made.

And now that you can fill up rooms up to 60 players…wow that'll be sweet…

Right you are! Day one purchase of both games. Though, if R2's storyline is as good as R1's, I feel R2 will edge out GeoW2 in my books. And from what I've seen and heard, its spectacular.

Another good discussion promoting article Ben.

Ignore the doubters mate, your unbiased style is what keeps the worthwhile people here.

As for which game to get, I'm out of the online gaming at the moment so I may pick of Gears as I didn't have the first but I did buy Resistance 1.

Hi I'm new here (although I have been reading the site for months now I just never signed up till now) and this is my first post. I absolutley loved Resistance 1 I bought it with my PS3 the day the PS3 was released over here in the UK. However I could not compare it to Gears. Gears offered a brand new style of game play (the wierd 3rd person over the shoulder view) which I loved the game was grittier (not sure if thats a word) a realler (or that) than any game I had every played before. As for the movement of the characters how do you think you would move with loads of heavy gear on your shoulders (the movement in Resistance was not real enough for me you seemed to glide by). I also thought that the online for gear was better than any I had seen before or since as it seemed fairer. You couldn't just run in crazy knowing you'd respawn you had to be carful as once you lost your life you had to wait until the next round to respawn. The online on resistance was too crazy like halo, no tactics no flanking just straight up running at each other. The weaponry seemed more innovative in gears too a gun with a chainsaw on the bottom thats pretty cool, however the guns in Resistance were pretty awesome too the bullseye is COOL. I also prefered the story line of gears to resistance it just seemed scarier.

However I am not insulting Resistance, Resistance is an Awesome game and I will definately be getting the next installment, but I will also be getting gears of war 2 (which in my opinion will be better after watching the trailer included in unreal tournament 3, which also sucked a little I just don't like the smooth movement of some first person shooters it looks awesome THEY'RE ADDING THE MOST AWESOME FLAME THROWER EVER!).

I love resistance but its no Gears of War (I have yet to find a game which is better, except OBLIVION) can't wait for bothe these games too come out its going to be a fun winter (also looking forward to Fable 2 and Fallout 3)

I have to disagree with you about the guns. All gears did was the chainsaw and the hammer of dawn. Dont get me wrong, I absolutely loved those weapons, but they are nothing close to RFOM. The bullseye, hailstorm, and the sapper. The sapper is so much fun.

Resistance all the way. I never understood what the hell was goin on in GeoW. I would always wonder "What my friends are fighting these big, huge, disgusting lookin monsters." Resistance I new what was goin on and why. I loved the online in Resistance, thought the guns hands down in resistance were far more innovative GeoW. All I can remember is the gun with a chainsaw, and the satellite destroyer or whatever it was called. Resistance I remember the bullseye, how u can do tricks with the rocket launcher, auger plus many more I don't feel like mentioning. Both these games will sell. But I'm gettin R2 and call it a day.

Kj313 in Gears of War it was clear what you were fighting for. The locust (bad guys) lived underneath the planet that the humans were living on. The locust came up from under the planet (no-one knew there was anything down there) and started to attack the humans. They started a war against the humans in the game you are fighting to win the war as you would rather that the locust did not destroy the human race. However I did think of another good point for resistance they included a cathedral out of manchester which really annoyed the people who own it (more landmarks like that would be cool, the more people they annoy the better).

Funny, I couldn't figure out what was going on in Gears either. Thanks for clearing that up Carl. Still, besides the game mechanics, the game itself was nothing spectacular. IMO R1 had a greater sense of hopelessness and mystery. I mean, even the main character is infected … cool! So R2 for me is a day one buy. Gears didn't move me to buy a 360 so I doubt the second one will. Cover system is cool though so I play a little GTA4 any time I feel like hiding behind a wall. It holds me over until I get RE5.

Meh, i don't know.. I'm pretty sure GoW2 will be big.. And i'm also pretty sure it's xbox's last big title that i know of? Fable 2 is big but as big as gears i doubt it..

I have no idea who will come out on top, gears has a very big fanbase compared to resistance.. but resistance seems to promise alot more than the first one. It's a coin toss ladies and gents!

I feel both will probably be good games, but R2 for sure.I didn't even care for first person shooters until I played R1. I have GeoW for my PC and really don't like the online play and feel the replay value is not that strong Imo. I still play R1 to this day, so replay value is very strong and I feel it's more bang for my buck. After buying GeoW I wouldn't even consider buying GeoW2! I guess it's just not my cup of tea.

I'm not an FPS (or even 3rd person over-the-shoulder PS) player, by and large. But I have to give recognition where it's due, and the shooter genre is a big draw for Western audiences. I think that the real winner in the GeoW2/R2 fight is going to be the players.

With the two major players in the 'hardcore' console war (Wii is a part of the same generation of consoles, but Nintendo went 'innovative' over 'powerful,' which excludes it from this particular comparison) each pushing a second chapter in a popular, innovative franchise, it can only mean better games. No one can rest on their laurels in such an ultra-competative environment and that means newer, bigger, better things.

It's going to be an exciting showdown to watch, that's for sure.

for everyone else, try resistance 2 first.

I will be buying both games on the day they are released. I am lucky to have the 2 systems. I just waited an extra year before buying my PS3 as nothing made me want to buy it when it was out during that time. Argos had a sale on PS3 60gb with 3 PS3 games. I bought Resistance 2nd hand £20, what a bargain.
My 360 was well used for the year when I didn't have my PS3, Gears 1 was brilliant. Now both systems get used on a regular basis.

Just picked up R1 on the greatest hists list and its amazing, especially for a launch title. I know im late to the party but I didnt get a PS3 until COD4 came out and I went with that instead. That multi-player video for R2 looks awesome, couldnt figure out the scoring though.

i have both systems and a wii so i'm not a fanboy. the only reason r1 did so well was there weren't any other good ps3 games to buy at the time. i played it and wasn't terribly impressed. visually, its dark, has terrible textures and pretty lame character design. the combat lacks punch, its just not visceral enough -the weapons are just too gimmicky for my taste and the ai is awful. the mp fares better – but isn't a standout imo. gears has it all. the first gears is still the best looking game on any console to date and most any developer will admit that when asked. unbelievably the mp looks just as good as the sp, an amazing feat. the combat is fast, brutal and bloody and the weapons are loud and nasty. decent ai in the sp. still one of the best looking and playing mp games on the market. I look forward to resistance 2 but the movies i've seen of actual gameplay (not cutscenes) look like more of the same. I hope for the best (killzone is a ways off) but r2 has much more to prove than gears2.

pavlovic

GeoW has a terrible AI… It's like a Jackie Chan movie, there are 5 locust arround you, but they will attack one at a time, and if you use the chainsaw, the other locust will only be waiting for their turn to be slashed.

So, none of them are perfect games, but both are great games.

Look i want call you a fanboy cause right now it just seems your putting down one game and boasting another. I've played both and only beat resistance (not cause gears is that hard, it's just i don't have both). but imo resistance had the better story and atmosphere, and weapons. Gears had amazing bosses, imo, and great graphics and blood effects. As for their sequels. Resistance is boasting 60 player online combat with 5 person squads in them. Gears is promoting a pretty damn good cover and shoot system and simple story, and it's graphics are just more polished but that's not a bad thing. Pros and cons to both but i prefer for the long term resistance. Now i am gonna chew you out for saying resistance was only good cause everything else sucked. Resistance had less offline lag issues, 40 player online, innovative weapons, an original story, and smarter ai compared to GeoW. Now i don't want to sound like an ass but seriously don't pull any bs or try to push your opinions as facts.

"Gears" the best looking game on any console? Just play a vid of game like "Dark Sector", (which generally didn't recieve exeptional ratings) side-by-side with a vid of Gears. I don't think I'd be going out on a limb by saying those two games look comparable. Yes, Gears was very cool for it's time, but a lot of games have come out since 2006. If you actually have a ps3, I suggest you give it a try.

Terry: Sorry, but there are few developers that say Gears of War is still the "best looking console game" out there. Many will claim that honor could go to Uncharted, MGS4, or any number of other games. Your comments regarding Resistance seem heavily skewed and equally false, which is why people are going to assume you're biased towards the 360.

Resistance did well because it's a great game. I played that and Gears, and while I might say Gears is a slightly better game technically, I emphasize "slightly." I will also say I ended up having more fun with Resistance, but that's only a personal preference.
