We've been waiting for a release date for Wipeout HD for quite a long time now, and we were disappointed to learn the estimated launch time had been downgraded to "coming soon." However, circumstances have changed. Thankfully.

Joystiq confirmed with SCEA producer Daimion Pinnock that the highly anticipated futuristic racer will arrive some time this fall. That's a great deal better than the dreaded "TBA" label, and it adds another relatively big title to an already loaded autumn lineup. It may just be a downlaodable title, but Wipeout HD should be an impressive technological accomplishment. It will boast full 1080p visuals, Dolby 5.1 surround sound, 60 frames per second gameplay, splitscreen, 8-player online play, Sixaxis and Trophy support, and yes, even custom soundtracks! This is guaranteed to be one of the most significant additions to the PlayStation Store's library, and if you were a fan of previous installments, you can't possibly pass on this one. And even if you're new to the franchise, aren't you a fan of mind-bending, smooth-as-silk speed?

When they nail down an exact release date for Wipeout HD , we'll be sure to let you know. In the meantime, our anticipation level for this one just jumped a notch.

Wow…Wipe-Out is the only racer of its kind i'll touch. Mainly because it was one of the VERY first PS1 games i ever played. The sense of speed was incredible even then. Good news 🙂

Finally! I cannot wait to play this.
They need to go ahead and start work on the actual PS3 game that they were talking about.

Is that really the appropriate place to ask something like that?

Hehe anyone remember why the release was pushed back? You know them failing Epilepsy tests. That still makes me laugh, can you imagine a game with that much strobe effect. I cant wait for this.

yeh buy for me. Pain has been great with your own music. So a racing title should be fun.

Yeah, just for future reference, please keep everything on topic in comments to articles. I shouldn't have answered that there, but I was just being nice. 😉

Anyone with specific questions can always e-mail me directly. I've never ignored a single message from readers before and I'm not about to start now.

I glad to hear that Wipeout HD is coming out this fall, however I would have loved for them to keep the original mode which failed the epilepsy test as an option with a safety warning on it. That would be really awesome. But thats just my opinion.

No, that's still begging for a lawsuit. 😉

Personally, I was a gigantic fan of Wipeout XL; I thought it was one of the most overlooked and under-appreciated titles for the original PlayStation, and I will most definitely get Wipeout HD.

Do you really think the "epilepsy" rumors had any weight to them?

WipeoutXL was my first taste of the Wipeout serious and it was great. I love the PSP versions as well. I only Wipeout release I didn't really enjoyed was Wipeout Fusion. Yes XL was great though.

Epileptic Seizure Inducing you say ? HOW CAN WE LOSE ?! but seriously, the Frame per second view/display must be intense.

I personally hope they take better care with Wipeout HD than they did with Pulse for the PSP, which to date, the DLC has never graced us here in the US… Makes me worry that the US will be shafted when it comes to additional content for Wipeout HD, should any be planned.

The delay of the wipeout dlc was a sales/interest based decision rather than of neglect. WO has had a much stronger following in Europe and elsewhere than the US. Also, gamers in the US tend to complain more about reusage vs innovation, and just in general. So I think they delayed the dlc, for the sake of helping hd's sales, here.

I want it!
Wipeout has always been fun

The futuristic atmosphere reminds me so much of the psone days…..

Makes consoles feel like they're finally next-gen.

I've always waited for the 'next-gen' buzz to die off before participating in gaming. Why? I wait for all the fizz and foam to simmer down from the inflated marketing, and developer learning curves before enjoying the best which becomes obvious after being available for some time. The true mark of AAA titles is that they withstand the test of time (over generations). The wipeout franchise is of these.

As is Gran Turismo…If you don't like Sim racing, i understand if you don't agree too much. However it is a AAA title that will always stay up there.
