Update: It seems there is some question as to what we actually get in this package. The ability to play MGO should be there, but the user may also have to download a variety of other pieces from the PlayStation Store. Let's just say the actual text in the magazine doesn't entirely support the front-page announcement…we'll have to keep a sharp lookout for any new developments.
We've been wondering about the exact details of Metal Gear Online , and whether or not it will be a standalone title. We know it exists, of course, but recent whispers have claimed the game will actually come packaged with Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots . Others have said the two games will simply release on the same day. But according to a big story in the upcoming January 2008 issue of PlayStation: The Official Magazine, the first rumor was right: these two will ship in the same box!
That's right, MGS4 and MGO will be available together, although it's unclear if this means the game will cost more than the standard $59.99. MGS4 nabbed the top spot in the publication's "Top 10 Games of '08" feature story, and they included some baseline info beyond the MGS4/MGO bundled-together announcement. It seems MGO will support up to 16 players online in Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, King of the Hill and Team Sneak. They also hint at character customization; players will be able to equip their chosen character with three special abilities, and both the skills and weapons will level up over time. What's this? Role-playing elements in Metal Gear ? Well, we think it's a darn fine idea.
So there you have it: one of the finest single-player experiences of 2008 (guaranteed) packaged together with what should be one of the finest online experiences of the year. Does it really get any better than that, stealth fans?
