A little while ago, we heard Harmonix was working on a patch that would make the wireless guitar controller from Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock compatible with Rock Band . Harmonix and MTV Games heard the cries of consumers and decided to make this happen, but unfortunately, it seems Activision isn't compliant with the idea.
According to a recent post made over at the official Rock Band forums by the Harmonix Team, they believe in "interoperability between music instrument controllers across all music games." They go on to say this is "clearly in the best interest of consumers," which is why they created the software patch for the PS3 version of Rock Band that would allow for guitar compatibility and support for third-party peripherals. Now, Harmonix submitted this patch to Sony and it has already been approved. Activision stands in the way, though, as they object to the patch…which isn't exactly surprising, but still annoying to the consumers who are crying out for compatibility.
Here's a snippet of the post-
"We sincerely hope that Activision will reverse its decision and allow release of the compatibility patch and further, that Activision will allow Guitar Hero III to support Rock Band guitar controllers as well. We welcome all third party developers who wish to support our controllers and will provide any required support in order for them to do so."
"We believe that when consumers have choice, everyone wins. Harmonix and MTV Games hope that Activision and others will also adopt this philosophy."
Well, they'll definitely gain a lot of fans with that philosophy. When and if Activision decides to let this patch through, we'll be sure to let you know. In the meantime, it appears guitar compatibility between Rock Band and Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock is temporarily on hold.
