PlayStation 3 Rebound Imminent?

In many ways, it was a very tough first year for Sony and the PlayStation 3. President and CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment America, Jack Tretton, has to admit that much, but he also believes the comeback is imminent. In speaking with MSNBC recently, Tretton spoke about the poor PS3 launch of 2006 and more importantly, how this year's holiday season compares with last year's. …obviously, it's a damn big difference.

Of course, he did have to start off with what appears to be the company motto now: the "we're in it for the long run" philosophy. It's an oldie, but still a goodie-

“The first year is important, but it’s the first inning of a nine-inning baseball game,” he says. “You’re not going to win many baseball games if you panic when you’re down 1-0 in the first inning.”

Remember, we're talking about a company that has routinely come out ahead of the competition in the game industry. The PlayStation and PS2 have sold a combined 230 million units worldwide and with each console, there were times when it seemed they'd buckle under the pressure. But it never happened, and in the end, they gained superiority, which is something Sony and Tretton believe the PS3 will eventually do as well. The well-documented doubling of PS3 hardware sales for the last week of October is a good start, and big-name exclusive titles like Ratchet and Clank Future: Tools of Destruction and Uncharted: Drake's Fortune are definitely helping matters.

All in all, it seems quite clear that Sony is headed into this year's holiday season with a hell of a lot of momentum, and in general, the PS3 is in a far better position.

"It’s the first time that we have the PlayStation 3 in stock, that we have a great software library for it and we’ve got very attractive pricing," said Tretton. "So I really feel like we’re able to go into the holiday season with a fully loaded weapon as compared to last year."

Sounds good to us. And as we all remember, the biggest of the big exclusives aren't here yet, but they're scheduled to arrive in 2008: Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots , Gran Turismo 5 and Final Fantasy XIII . Yeah, you're gonna want a PS3 for those, my gamer friends.
