Today, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE) has officially announced the long-awaited PS3 firmware update 2.00, which comes loaded with plenty of new features. As we already guessed, it will let the user turn the system on and off remotely with the PSP (Remote Play1 function). According to the press release, this "will cement the partnership between PS3 and PSP and create a truly global experience."

Now that we can operate our PS3 through a Wi-Fi connection, we have the chance to listen to music, look at photos, and watch videos saved on the PS3 hard disk drive. …and we can do that anywhere in the world! But the enhancements don't end there- 2.00 allows for the creation of personalized playlists in both the music and photo folders. As of now, PS3 owners can develop their very own unlimited music playlists and even share photos – in spectacular high definition – with friends and family.

This "personalized PS3" theory holds true for the rest of the update as well, as we'll now be able to alter the XMB (Cross Media Bar) menu screen. Don't like the color? Want to ramp up the brightness? You can do it, or you can also produce your very own custom theme! More backgrounds will become available as time goes on, but for now, it's just good to know this option is finally here. Lastly, 2.00 adds an Information Board on the XMB to keep the user current on all the latest PlayStation news, a new PlayStation Network category and logo for easier navigation, and Trend Micro Web Security, which is a state-of-the-art Internet security system. Yep, 2.00 is all that and a bag of chips.
