We all know about Naughty Dog's latest project, Uncharted: Drake's Fortune for the PlayStation 3. It's scheduled to arrive in North America on November 19, and most have high hopes for the game, especially because of the development crew. Remember, it's the same team responsible for that fantastic Jak and Daxter franchise. And as it turns out, they want another installment on the PS3.
Naughty Dog's Evan Wells said the team was "extremely impressed" with the PS3's hardware in a recent IGN interview, and many people around the office are "dying" to produce a new Jak and Daxter for Sony's next-gen system.
"I’m more impressed with the hardware the longer we get to work with it. Imagining trying to develop Uncharted without the Blu-ray drive, without the hard drive, or without the Cell processor makes me wonder what kind of game we would have ended up with," said Wells. "It certainly would have required a lot more compromises than I would have been comfortable making. And much like the PS2, I think the longer developers work with the machine, the better the games are going to get. For instance we are only using approximately 1/3 of the processing power of the SPUs on the Cell processor in Uncharted."
That's yet another developer who says they're only using a fraction of the PS3's power to produce their game; 1/3 of the PlayStation 3's potential doesn't seem like a lot. Obviously, there's definitely some room to grow, and that's exactly the kind of thing that excited developers. Wells further spoke about the future of Naughty Dog, and again reinforced the team's desire to work on a new Jak and Daxter :
"We’re all very excited about the technology, engine, and development environment that we’ve created during the production of Uncharted. Believe it or not, even though the push to the end of this project took a huge effort, everybody is already champing at the bit to get started on what’s next. We’re doing a lot of post mortems to identify what worked and what could be improved across all departments so that we can achieve even more with our next project. As for Jak and Daxter, there are still a lot of people here who would love to work on the franchise again, especially using all of the cool tech that was developed for Uncharted. However, exactly when you might see that is still anybody’s guess."
If you may recall, both Ratchet and Clank and Jak and Daxter were mammoth titles for the PS2 back in the day, so wouldn't it make sense for both to have mammoth installments on the PS3? Insomniac just did it with Ratchet and Clank Future: Tools of Destruction , so why shouldn't we see the return of J&D? Go for it, guys!
