Lately I've been wondering to myself, who's the bigger kook…Jack Thompson (the anti-videogame demented lawyer from hell) or Michael Pachter (the analyst who has a very hard time properly analyzing anything). Well, that decision is still up in the air for me, but Mr. Pachter has shined in his thoughts regarding the delay for Grand Theft Auto 4, citing problems with development on the PlayStation 3. Pachter claims that Sony has a contractual agreement with Rockstar to have GTAIV released on the PS3 simultaneously with the Xbox 360 version.
"We think it is likely that the Rockstar team had difficulty in building an exceptionally complicated game for the PS3, and failed to recognize how far away from completion the game truly was until recently," Pachter states.
"We think it is also likely that Take-Two had a contractual commitment to Sony that it would not favour competitor Microsoft by launching the Xbox 360 version of GTA IV prior to launching the PS3 version, and believe that any delay of the PS3 version necessitated a delay of the Xbox 360 version."
"While the delay of GTA IV was clearly not the fault of new management, we believe that it should have been better understood several months ago, and should have been communicated to investors much earlier than today," Pachter comments.
"The company has begun an initiative to improve the green light process for new projects, but given the delays of Manhunt and GTA, its process for monitoring projects under development appears to be a failure."
I think Pachter also fails to mention that Rockstar North was having issues with X360 development, as recent builds of GTAIV have been plagued by framerate issues, and other nuisances. Additionally, with the lack of a hard-drive on every Xbox 360, working around that has also manifested to be a problem for GTAIV's development.
I'm all for admitting Sony's problems whenever they occur (refer to Media Create threads), but let's not point the finger on them for this one. It's nobody's fault but Rockstar's. They're having trouble running the game on both consoles, not just one. Write that down, Pachter.
