Raise your hand if you're interested in the idea of a live action movie based on the legendary Metal Gear Solid franchise.

According to Deadline , Sony Pictures is moving forward with the project, and the company is currently in "early talks" with "The Kings of Summer" director Jordan Vogt-Roberts to direct the film.

This film has been in the early stages of planning for quite some time, and that's because it took a while for Sony and Konami to "get on the same page" in terms of story. Series creator Hideo Kojima had previously confirmed that Solid Snake would be the protagonist but that's about all we know right now. As for who will play Snake, Kojima said he was thinking about Hugh Jackman, but he later opted for an unannounced newcomer.

Kojima is indeed working on the film in a supervisory role, so we'd like to think he won't let anyone muck it up. A perfectionist doesn't let that happen, right?

I don't know. This guy seems kind of new and inexperienced, even though the movie was not bad.

My take:

The Wachowskis would make a very interesting presentation and art direction, but it could go either way as far as story development. I'm not sure their style would fit MGS.

Nolan would be an interesting option, especially considering he doesn't like to infest his films with CGI and usually has some wild story ideas, but after TDKR and that plot twist in The Prestige, who knows.

Sam Mendes is dynamic and can make some serious stuff. Beautiful cinematography and direction in his films. A good option there.

Jim Caviziel or Hugh Jackman for Snake.

Daniel Day-Lewis, Hugo Weaving or Sean Bean for Ocelot.

Martin Sheen for Campbell.

Still not sure about the rest.

This simply wont work. There is just far to much depth to the Metal Gear Saga to put into a single 2 hours action movie. Even if you take just Metal Gear Solid 1 its a good 8-9 hours game. I know you can make changes as most adaptations should but I just cannot see them maintaining the atmosphere of the original – They couldn't even do that with the Gamecube remake which just felt so stale.

Video game adaptations can me done right, I still regard the first Silent Hill movie as a superb transition into film. It carried over the haunting atmosphere of Silent Hill but didn't follow the story directly, it's a really good movie and deserves more praise. As for the second movie… that can be simply forgotten.

They better have Kojima direct it. I know the mans dream has always been in cinema.

Lets just hope the "Holywood" doesn't wreck the man and leave him a barren wasteland of idea's and creativity like the city of angels seems to do to anyone with a good head on their shoulders.

Definitely Hugh Jackman for Snake. It wouldn't even be that difficult for him. All he really have to do is channel more Wolverine with some tweaking in his performance. Definitely not Martin Sheen for Cambell. Would remind me of his god awful performance in Spawn.

Is this franchise really worth the risk. It could be done right, but what are the odds of the film industry actually capturing the depth of any Metal Gear?

I swear this movie's been in the works since before mgs4 guns of the patriots, I'm betting a 2021 release date or later.
