It took most of last year for the well-received Tomb Raider reboot to turn a profit.

That's because the game took a gigantic amount of money to make (in excess of $100 million) and Square Enix's initial sales projections were just…ridiculous. Still, thanks to great reviews and even better word-of-mouth, Tomb Raider sold 3.4 million copies in its opening month, and finally reached profitability in December.

Now, Square Enix boss Darrell Gallagher has given us another encouraging update at the company's blog:

"By the end of this month we will surpass 6 million units for our Tomb Raider reboot, and, having achieved profitability back in 2013, Tomb Raider has exceeded profit expectations and continues to make significant contributions to our overall financial performance."

It's hard to remember the last time a game needed nearly a full year to become a major contributor to a publisher's profits, but whatever. We do know that a new Lara Croft adventure is in the works, and that is definitely worth getting exciting about. We don't have any concrete details on the new project, but Gallagher said:

"We can't wait to continue our adventures with Lara in the sequel that is in development at Crystal Dynamics. We are also looking forward to building on the success and lessons learned from the reboot to continue redefining and setting new benchmarks for Tomb Raider in the years to come."

Don't forget that the Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition is now available for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Featuring a ton of improvements and additions, it's certainly the "definitive" iteration of the game.

It's truly a better game than I thought. Thanks to the guys/girls here who convince me to give it a try. I could literally just have Laura stand somehwere and listen to sound of nature.

Playing the free PS+ version of TR right now & I've got to say that it's one of my 2 top favorite games out of the last 50-60 games that I've played over the last year(Deus Ex being the other one).

"Thank you, Crystal Dynamics"

Didn't like The Last Of Us Biker?

I still need to download the PS Plus version of this. I haven't really turned my Ps3 on since getting a Ps4. But definitely did for Bioshock Infinite.

KingRed,

No, I haven't had the pleasure of TLOU, but from what I've seen of it so far, I probably would have included it in my top 5 or 10 if I had.

The reason due to being out of work since May 2011 from to health problems after I was laid off(and no medical coverage), all of my life savings were totally wiped out by Feb 2012, so I haven't been able to get any of the current games, and only a few semi-current titles only at greatly reduced prices for the last year (unless they've been given out free these days on PS+).

And unfortunately for me, I'll be also be losing my PS+ this coming November because I foresee no expected funds to renew it either.

Anyway, enough about me…..go ahead & D/l Tomb Raider ASAP, I think you're going to love it.

tomb raider ill say is probably the best in the series but honestly square enix doesn't care unless it makes a big profit it took 1 year to make a profit
square based on their irrational decisions ever since their Merge with Enix has been on drugs it's the only Logical explanation i can come up with

lets look at there actions
Squaresoft start of their downfall they decide to merge with enix it gets delayed due to FF the spirits with in flopping
square enix buys a bunch of companys
after the merge it takes them 5 years to make FF13 which was a bad entry
the Last Remnant flops terribly
FF14 flops and has to be rebuilt because well the devs put almost no effort at all in this refer to Yoshi P saying the devs pretty much were told to make an MMO and call it FF14 with no instructions
everybody seems to forget this FF13-2 was made as an apology according to square enix yes an apology that was in complete and loaded with on disc DLC
and sold less than half of FF13 even if it was better than 13 which isn't hard

then square enix announces LR which the fans tell square they don't want but they make anyways

lets not forget FF agilao which is JP exclusive
and FFvs 13 aka FF15 8 years later its still not finished

so how has square been surviving
Kingdom hearts on handhelds
FF remakes on IOS
bravely default handheld game again

Kingdom hearts 1.5
FFX HD
FF14 almost killed them then ARR saved them MMOS are tricky and you don't know how many people quit it and are waiting for it go F2P im a MMO hopper
i see many people on different MMOS waiting for FF14 to flop and be forced to go F2P just like Tera did

yea the once great JRPG giant is more living off handhelds and remakes
