There are some franchises that gamers see as beyond saving. Or maybe it's just a series that has gone on for so long that we're all sick to death of it.
Do you think such a franchise exists? Has a certain IP simply overstayed its welcome? Which is the one that is running on fumes? Which won't benefit from a fresh coat of paint?
Perhaps the most important thing to remember is that above all else, game developers do want to create new things. On the other hand, if the market demands repeat performances of successful productions, that's what publishers want. And if that's what publishers want, that's what developers need to make. Unless a studio is inherently wealthy, they need the help of a publisher, yes? Ironically, the same people that complain about the situation are part of the same group that dictates the situation: The consumers.
So, if there is a series that you believe needs to disappear, why? Is it something consumers simply don't want anymore? Or has the publisher misread consumer interest? Is the quality of the IP dropping and is there no easy fix? I find it difficult to bid farewell to established franchises that have delivered so much joy to so many. But all things run their course and eventually, you just have to accept that the series in question isn't what it once was. It's just disappointing on all fronts and so, maybe it should be laid to merciful rest… Better than painfully struggling on, isn't it?
What leaps to mind?
The Last of Us should be laid to rest. Overrated is ND's business, and business is good.

Everyone's entitled to their own opinions, but seriously, everyone knows you hate ND, it's all you ever say on this site so why do you still bother?
ethird, are you swimming upstream simply to be different or do you legitimately hate one of the the most talented developers we have?

Somebody just needs to use Knights of the Round on your ass.
Knights of the Round, W-Summon, mime;
recurring
Knights of the Round! The single greatest summons ever. I found this WITHOUT THE GUIDE!! It simply amazed me. Went crazy the first time I used it.
It really saddens me how even a repetitive opinion gets harassed by the lot of you here.
Thought to escape this behavior only to see you lot reacting to it… *sigh*.
On topic: Call of Duty, but a reboot, because there needs to be a sub par modern shooter with at least an intriguing single player campaign.
I only joined for the KOTR bandwagon
/I regret nothing
The Last of Us is the only Naughty Dog game I like. I don't like their others, but that's because they aren't my type of game.
I find it hard to believe you even got past the first disk without a guide.
@UnderDog It's very easy, the only thing you need a guide for is W-Item, KotR, and all the other hidden and cool materia (caves and Golden Saucer)
Oh I know. It was a jab at ethird. It's fine because he likes to get us riled up and enjoys our insults. It's all good.
It is easy to get all that stuff without a guide, though. I just don't believe someone like him took the time to do it. If you fly between the chocobo farm and the chocobo guru up north, you eventually are told pretty much exactly what to do. It's just a lot of annoying get in airship, fly, talk, rinse and repeat.
Chocobilly gets super excited and keeps telling you to go back for more info, so it's just an issue of whether or not you fly all over the world and decide to land at the guru's house.
The game gives you what you need to know in order to get a golden chocobo through the guru, and certainly how to get the river or mountain ones for all rare material except knights of the round. The only thing that is vague is how to train your chocobo. (You do so through races, but even that you can figure out based on their C,B, or A ranking) Even getting the carob nut is told, as it's "past the greenlands at the border of the forest".

That was fun. I got 100% completion on The Last of Us, does that mean I found everything? It says 80 collectibles but I wasn't even trying to find everything…
I also never saw the appeal of ND games. Most were pretty lackluster to me, and not worthy of all the praise they seemed to get.
Yeah Geo, it depends on tastes as well.
Does gotta make you wonder though… what is it you aren't seeing that professionals overwhelmingly can't seem to ignore? World didn't particularly like it, but he still can see the value where it exists. Don't forget all the reputable developers that gave it a shout-out, too. They matter, perhaps more than anyone.

I'm playing TLoU right now and I'm loving. It's a top notch game, it's very well done and certainly ND met the expectations in my eyes! it's all well worth it.
Unfortunately I could never get into Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, and I won't continue the series until I get done with U1.
wait you hate nd :O how can one do that!?
Are you playing thee same games from ND as the rest of us? They made at least 2 games that define how great the PS3 and the last gen was.
Halo and Call of Duty. Too many devs try and make games alike them… and in turn ruin normally good games.
yes, they are poison to other game's
Assassins Creed….I'm bored to death.
While I agree it's getting somewhat repetitive, I think that's series that just needs a little break. I wouldn't want it gone forever.
It shouldn't be an annualized franchise. It could become the next Guitar Hero and overstay its welcome. And if that happens, then UbiSoft is going to be forced to put it to rest for a while.
It's the annualization that broke that franchise. Had those games had at least three years between them, they would have been a major event every single time.
Cause objectively speaking they are really good games. An open world sucker like myself should have totally *adored* them. But it's just way too much. I need to become hungry between the meals.

I second, third, fourth or whatever Assassin's Creed and sure maybe not killed off but it needs a rest. Ubisoft has driven that series into the ground.
No way, every year Ubi makes me hungry for more AC. I can't get enough.
So long as they keep those unique and fun locations coming, and cool main characters, I will keep showering them with money.
If we ever return to a similar setting to the Ezio arc, I will quit. I am SO OVER renaissance Europe.
I dunno man, I think just about anything can be redeemed theoretically. Especially after Tomb Raider's amazing return.
Still a few stick out. I'd say Resident Evil is beyond saving. I know it'd make no business sense to end a franchise that still sells so well but it's just so pathetic what they are putting out. Making it Survival/horror again would make it a great game but then I suppose nobody would buy it. On that note Dead Space has to stop too before it gets worse.
I think the Kratos character's God of War franchise has to end. That's not to say it can't be reinvented in a new way but to keep making more in that universe with the big bad baldy is insulting to the legacy.
Resident Evil needs a complete reboot like nobody's business. I would love to see them just make a new story about a special forces unit that goes to investigate troubling reports from the outskirts of a small, Midwestern town… They could incorporate both the mansion and perhaps eventually let players explore Racoon City too, like you did in the beginning of RE2. It is such a great premise for a scary video game, they just need to ditch the awful baggage from recent entries (and the ludicrous plot twists) and start over. Tremendous potential there.
yes, too much baggage. The existing characters are done being interesting.
Madden!,its become old hash and dated
Well you can say that about any sports simulator, they're sort of restricted by reality and so all they can do is repeat what they're doing while adding enhancements to make it more realistic. But the core is always gonna be the same.
You might as well add in NBA and FIFA.
What ya expect?
A rocket arm on Tom Brady?
A speed boot on Adrian Peterson?
Final Fantasy.
It's day has been and gone. It would be a mercy to pull the plug now.
Sadly that's true.
It hurts my heart to admit that sad reality…
That's what I was gonna say.
Well, the franchise IS having it's 15th game coming, and that's just the main series, not even including the spin-offs or alternative versions like Tactic or Dissidia.
But that's not even the reason why we want it dead…………
Ditto.
I hope no one tries to make another Duke Nukem.
A good example of a good series going to hell.
I hope they do, that's one that'd be easy to reboot well.
Madden. The series badly needs competition. NBA2K, NHL and MLB: The Show have zero competition but are always very good. Madden is blah every year. However, the game is geared more to casuals who don't care for game quality as much.
Can't really think of another series that needs to go on hiatus for a year or forever. I hope once Square Enix goes through the last vestiges of Wada's "legacy" we'll see a return to real Final Fantasy games.
Well, maybe Minecraft. Seems like kids enjoy this game for some reason. I have no idea what they see in this game. Never played it, doubt I'd get into it, doubt we need it.
I agree with you on Madden.
But not with Minecraft. Its a kid magnet and I suggest you keep an eye on how the Vita and PS4 versions perform on said consoles. On the PS3, Minecraft did extremely well.
And as long as Minecraft helps sell Vita's and PS4's, I don't care what Minecraft is or who it targets.
Minecraft isn't going anywhere. It's a better playing experience than a lot of the repetitive stuff that comes out nowadays.
God of War. I don't want it to die, but to just take a rest for a couple of years. I love the series, and if Ascension proved anything, aside from the great technical gem it was, is that it needs to take a break. Maybe even a reboot somewhere down the road.
Definitely time for a new direction. I hope they have the courage to really take it somewhere different, both in terms of mythology and gameplay. Some die hard fans will complain about change but a great game will get the support of the rest of us.
Resident Evil. They really need to kill of resident evil. It hit its peak with 4, lost a lot of ground with 5 and totally killed any love I ever had for the franchise with 6. It's sad that they can't do it on a high note but it really needs to die as a franchise
Revelations is the only RE game after Outbreak that I actually enjoy playing.
