This Game Never Got A Sequel, And You Cried Like A Baby

For all of us, there are games out there that never received a sequel and to this day, we're pissed about it.

Which one is it for you? Or do you have multiple titles on your list? I kinda do but I've lost all hope that any of them will receive true-blue sequels.

The first is my favorite game of all time, Final Fantasy Tactics . Yes, I'm aware there was the GBA title, Final Fantasy Tactics Advance , and also Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions , but those aren't really sequels. The latter is actually just an upgrade to the original. Unfortunately, it's so outdated now, I don't think we'll ever see "Final Fantasy Tactics 2." And if they do make it, it'll either be a low-budget downloadable or it'll be for mobile platforms or something. Which automatically makes me lose interest.

Another one is Legend of Dragoon , which should've had a sequel. It didn't sell terribly, although many critics totally shafted it when it launched. That could've hurt the chances for a follow-up effort. It was just one of those RPGs that really hooked me from the outset and, despite one of the most horrendous world maps I'd ever seen, offered a brilliant gameplay mechanic and (strangely enough) some seriously detailed towns. I also miss the characters, which were pretty damn cool. There was just so much potential for a franchise and it never freakin' happened. Talk about irritating. Rumors persist but right now, LoD2 isn't real.

What about you?

The only thing I can think of right now is Alan Wake. I'd really like to see a true sequel to the game, which I guess they started work on, but postponed it for Quantum Break. I thought it was a truly underrated title, and one of the best exclusive Microsoft properties. Also, until The Last of Us, it was the best example of a more modern take on classic survival horror.

'Steambot Chronicles.' My favorite game was supposed to get a sequel on the PS3, but it was cancelled after the tsunami hit Japan.
Reviewers didn't seem to like the cel-shaded graphic style and the controls, but the graphics were a matter of preference and the controls just took some getting used to.
I love the choice offered in the game, the sheer amount of content, and the quirky characters/story.
Truly sad if it never gets any kind of sequel (spiritual successor or something similar).

I remember that game. It was weird but I too really enjoyed it. I never ended up beating it I don't think but I liked what I played of it.

I have a laundry list, so maybe just a few this latest gen:

The lack of a Heavenly Sword 2 was heartbreaking. It could have been the next God of War franchise. Even though Ninja Theory moved on it still should have happened. (Such irony that they moved on because it "didn't sell well" and then their next 2 games didn't sell as well as that one.

No Suikoden VI is a crime against humanity.

Dark Void needed another game because it had what it took to become great and was unique and the only jetpack game.

Singularity could have been the only competition to Bioshock if it continued. I want more.

I'll die if there's no Two Worlds III, but hopefully for the next gen 🙂

You know, World, you're more than welcome to do reviews for older games if you want. Just let me know ahead of time which one you want to do.

And Suikoden VI…I would do just about anything to see that.

YES. I think Square was just too intimidated to follow it up anymore after the mixed reaction to Chrono Cross but the world NEEDS more games in that universe. God I hope SE gets their mojo back this gen…

Most critics shafted LoD because most critics are no skill losers who don't knowthe first thing about video games. This is a very sensitive topic for me as you can see. You know what the #1 thing they whined about like 5 year old girls? The battle system. "Waaa it's too hard", It wouldn't be if you babies had any hand eye coordination. Ughhh!!! makes me so mad when LoD comes up.

As much as I adore LoD (and I very, VERY much do, I don't exactly cry for a sequel. The game ended rather perfectly. On the other hand, no new legacy of kain game after defiance makes me rage.

Also, would I be terribly skewered if I mentioned Dirge of Cerberus? If only because the secret cutscene at the end makes me pull my hair out in curiousity.

Some folks really dug that game so no we won't skewer ya. Personally I died inside when I found out it was a third person shooter (I didn't research the game I just rented it on a whim) so never got far enough to judge it.

I am in the same boat as ben, just waiting and hoping one day we will see a true follow up/ sequel to FFT. No question, it is my all-time favorite game. Hundreds of hours of my life have been spent on that masterpiece. I have seriously considered making a clone sequel myself just to scratch that long time itch.

too many.
half life 3, heavenly sword 2, enslaved 2, WET2, reckoning2, LA noire 2, alpha protocol 2, just to name a few.
so many awesome games which got cut off far too short.
ok half life is the exception, but come on valve should hang for their crimes!
back to short lived franchises though, its a shame its always the unique creative games that always get cut short.
this industry really does hate creativity,
spit out what thousands have done before and your guaranteed a long prosperous franchise!
try and introduce clever new things, ie alpha protocol, and your condemned to davy jones locker!
heres a game that actually delivers on the promise of character consequences, characters change and react to you depending on what you do or say, the game changes the same way.
piss off the wrong people and you loose equipment, you miss out on missions, the game actually changes!
not ooooo i dont like you im going to give you a different cut scene.
as usual someone comes out and actually tries to inject some creativity, some meaning, some depth into something, and as usual thats the last you ever see of it.
come to think of it what has obsidian been working on since?
cant remember them releasing a game after this.

I'll cast my vote for Heavenly Sword 2. HS was such a fantastic game, it felt like getting my PS3 was worth it for that game alone. The gameplay was great on its own but also it had some of the most original and well-acted cut scenes I had experienced in a game at that point.

Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines.

The world has not nearly seen enough RPGs with a Gothic vampire setting. And this game had very interesting and diverse classes that offered significant differences to how you played the game.

For example, one class pretty much forced you to play the game as a stealth game as they could never be seen by humans while another made you a social animal advancing through dialogue and interaction.

Add to this a good/bad slider moved by your actions and affected how NPCs reacted to you, and you got a game with a fantastic role-playing framework and a very high replay value.

The world NEED a sequel to this game!

If you are willing to join me in the land of brilliant but also mediocre games my friends at Reality Pump are working on a new Survival Horror game called Sacrilegium that is both modern and gothic, taking you from San Francisco to Romania where Vlad's legacy is giving rise to more horrors and new vampires.

It looked cool, that game! I don't mind a survivor game now and then. Not one bit (unless it is too scary).

But with Bloodlines we talk about a true RPG, complete with stuff to loot, things to find, NPCs to talk to, skill points to spend and the whole drill. The theme were just supernatural/vampire stuff instead of either sci-fi or fantasy.

I wish we saw more RPGs going for more genuine settings.

I think there was a sequel to the game I'd like a sequel to but I never played it and would love to see the series come back, I'm speaking of The Suffering.

Vivi_Gamer

Well mine is the obvious choice – Shenmue III

Shenmue was such a groundbreaking game for its time and was meant to go on for so much longer than merely 2 games. I have both games on Dreamcast and they're still fun to play but everytime I reach the end of Shenmue II I cannot help but want more. I would easily accept a PSN version of Shenmue III built within the same graphics engine as the previous games, if it meant getting the series complete – I don't need a next-gen version. I just want it to be finished 🙁

Another game I would really love a sequel to is Squarsoft's The Bouncer. It was a great Streets of Rage styled beat em up, which has a relatively decent story to boot. The sad thing is the game missed out on the potential of having the story being co-op, which had they implemented into the game the option of co-op it would be regarded as a classic for sure – Whats even more annoying is that they have a Multiplayer VS mode, so its not completely out there to think they could have included it for the main story mode. The only game I can think of keeping this formula alive this gen was Tekken 6, but it wasnt all that engaging as the story was a joke.

Yeah I'd love a Shenmue III, it'd be hard to play it on anything other than Dreamcast though. After trying ShenII on Xbox I had to quit and get the Dreamcast version running, it's just better on that system.

I think using the same assets is a good idea because Shenmue needs to be finished and a next gen version, while amazing, probably could never pay back the investment since the fan base isn't huge.

Bouncer was epic, but so short!

The Bouncer!

And yes, it was short but it said right on the box "Play the Action Movie!" And that's exactly what you do. 🙂

Besides, it was just so much fun to go through it with different characters. And to this day, Dauragon C. Mikado is one of my favorite character names ever.

For me it would be the Fear Effect games. Yes there was one sequel, Fear Effect 2: Retro Helix (which I absolutely loved) but they were planning another game on the PS2. You can even find a trailer for it on Youtube. But then it got cancelled. Fear Effect 2 is by far my favorite game on the PS1 and I would have loved to see what it could have evolved into on the PS2.

Well the 2 that come to mind will without a doubt have sequels, RDR and Fallout.

So Ima go back a few gens. A true blue made by Square, sequel to Super Mario RPG. And I bet very few ppl have ever heard of this: Silicon Valley: Space Station, an N64 game made by DMA design, who would later go on to become… Wait for it… Rockstar North.

So many people have listed games I want sequels to.

Legend of Dragoon is a big one. I remember so many rumors about a sequel but alas nothing ever arrived.

Shenmue 3 because I need to know what the heck happens next!

Freedom fighters was amazing and one of the hidden gems of the PS2 era.

Legacy of Kain needs to get some more games as well.

Valkyria Chronicles on a console.

Folklore, I just want another game in that world.

Binary Domain, because I love that game and want another game in its world.

Alpha Protocol. Loved the first game and want a sequel.

Half life 3 is going to happen I just wonder when.

Day of Defeat needs an update. Its not a sony game but hey it has been about 10 years since Day of Defeat source came out. I want another one!

Oh here is a big one that only a couple of you might know of. Little game called Dragon Valor. I want a sequel its an old PS1 game.

Can you believe Konami has stopped making 2D Castlevanias? And that the best of them all, perhaps the best game of all time, Symphony of the Night, never even got a direct sequel? That Konami STILL has not made another Castlevania starring Alucard, the greatest protagonist the series has ever had both in terms of style and gameplay? It just boggles the mind.

I want a sequel to Burnout: Paradise. Despite how close some of Criterion's Need for Speed titles have come, I still wont be satisfied until I see another open world arcade-style driving game that allows for flat-spins and barrel rolls!!!
