If you've been asked to reset your PlayStation Network password, that's due to unknown "irregular activity," according to Sony.

As reported by GamesIndustry.biz , a round of PSN password resets went out yesterday. Those affected were notified by email; here's part of the message those customers saw:

"The Sony Entertainment Network team routinely monitors for any irregular activity, and if such activity is detected, we may sometimes reset passwords of affected accounts to protect consumers and their account information."

Details concerning that "irregular activity" weren't released but as always, news like this unfortunately reminds everyone of the PSN hack back in 2011. Chances are, this is no big deal but it's good to have an explanation for a password reset. Personally, I'm thinking it might not be a bad idea to change your password once a year or so, anyway. Security is always paramount as far as I'm concerned.

Glad mine wasn't changed. I don't have a head for new passwords. Saw that the store needed an update though.

This is already the 3rd time I have to change my password (in 3 weeks). It's getting pretty annoying, having to memorize a different password each time I change it. My password is already too long to be guessed anyway.

You have been forced by Sony to change password three times? If so that's interesting cause it might give us a clue as to what triggers this.

Do you have any theory as to why this has happened? Like, have you logged on your account from several machines, or have you let others know your account password, or something like that?
Or, have you tried logging into your account from a website (Sonys or other) or via a mobile app or anything else other than via the Playstation 4?

I've signed in to the mobile app, PSVITA, Ps3 and PS4. I got the email to change my password.

Do you play FIFA 14? From what I've heard these password resets are do to some kind of exploit through FIFA 14 trading card game. Not sure, but I believe this was also what plagued Xbox Live with last years FIFA title.

It is a big deal. Looks like this has to do with that FIFA ULTIMATE TEAM thing. People are using the max amount of money ($150)from your credit card stored on your account to buy coins and sell them later using a website. One of my friends was affected by this and was charged $150 to his account. Luckily, Sony will refund him his money.

I had to change mine last night. No email though. The notification popped up when I went to sign in. I've heard if you have the playstation app its a backdoor that hackers can use to get into your account.

This appears to be related to the way that the 'new' PlayStation Network operates. That is, the PSN on the PS4 and PlayStation App. (they operate on different network nodes, as to my knowledge)

I got the notification not even 30 seconds after I turned off my PS4. This can't be a coincidence.

They changed mine and it took me a whole day to reset it because for reasons unknown, I typed in the wrong year of birth back then haha :'/

Yeah same thing happened to me. Wouldn't accept my DOB and email. Not sure why. Don't know why I would have put a fake in there.

I was one of the ones who got that email, and had to change my password.

I was surprised as – due to the nature of my password – I considered it virtually unguessable.

I wonder how it was compromised enough to cause any "irregular activity"? Or was something else compromised on the part of Sony leading to a loss of such account information?

Hopefully not and this is the last I hear of it.

I was kinda freaked out about the email v when I got it but after this it seems like it is more like a small glitch and Sony is just covering their assess. I looked at my account activity and saw nothing strange

I had a password change request a couple of weeks ago. It came a couple of days after I had:
1. downloaded the PlayStation app (and sent a message) on my phone.
2. tethered my Vita to my phone to try the remote play function.

Would not be surprised if all the password reset issues were tied to people doing one of these two things on an account that has always had a steady IP address.

In the end, I actually changed my login credentials rather than my password.

I had one right after I got my PS4 online and set up my phone with the Playstation App. Not a big deal, but I was kind of confused as to what was going on.
