Gee, for games that didn't hit internal sales expectations, these two great titles still did pretty darn well.
In a recent Gamasutra post , Square Enix head of product development Darrell Gallagher revealed some very positive numbers for both Sleeping Dogs and this year's extremely popular Tomb Raider reboot.
First, Lara's new adventure managed to sell over 4 million copies, and it was the fastest-selling installment in the history of the franchise. It also became the "most critically acclaimed title" ever created by developer Crystal Dynamics (we certainly liked it a lot ). We have also heard that a next-generation effort is on the way, and we can't wait to see where Lara goes next! Just give us the same sort of gameplay structure, a whole new story and environment, and we'll be happy. Uncharted with a bit of freedom!
Gallagher also revealed that the formerly named "True Crime: Hong Kong," Sleeping Dogs , has proven profitable for Square Enix. He says that over 500,000 people per month continue to enjoy the well-received 2012 title. Hitting profitability was a "critical milestone" for the title although he didn't give us a final sales total. Square Enix announced earlier this year that Sleeping Dogs had shipped over 1.5 million units.
Lastly, Gallagher regrets that his company "walked away too early from these games," as he believes players would've appreciated more content. That may be true, but I for one am fine if a game just ends. …that's kinda the way it always used to be, remember?
