Castlevania: Lords of Shadow developer Mercury Steam has hinted at the idea of making a new Contra . But producer Dave Cox says it would have to be really special.
During a new Siliconera interview , Cox said his team would tackle a fresh take on the iconic franchise, provided they can give us something that isn't just plain ol' generic:
"You can't just bring out a generic shooter. You have to have a new idea. I think if we had a new idea and we could combine [it] with the universe of Contra, that would be special. Yeah, watch this space."
Cox added that no developer has done anything new with the series in a long time. He said that developers were just "doing their slant of something that has happened before." But as Mercury Steam reinvented Castlevania , they'd want to do the same thing for Contra . He wants to bring the franchise to the mainstream; it shouldn't just be for the hardcore:
"We are hardcore gamers, we played those games, but there are a lot of people that don’t know what Contra is. They have no idea. There is a massive audience out there; they play Call of Duty and love those games, but they don't know what Contra is. I think if we were going to reintroduce something to that audience, it has to be new and unique. It's got to stand out. It's got to have a new idea, something really cool about it that's never been done before."
Well, that's all true. There is indeed a massive audience out there who loves shooters, and a large portion of that audience has never played a Contra game. The question is whether or not that name carries any commercial cache anymore, and whether or not Mercury Steam would make a FPS or TPS… That makes a very big difference, yes?
