Castlevania: Lords of Shadow developer Mercury Steam has hinted at the idea of making a new Contra . But producer Dave Cox says it would have to be really special.

During a new Siliconera interview , Cox said his team would tackle a fresh take on the iconic franchise, provided they can give us something that isn't just plain ol' generic:

"You can't just bring out a generic shooter. You have to have a new idea. I think if we had a new idea and we could combine [it] with the universe of Contra, that would be special. Yeah, watch this space."

Cox added that no developer has done anything new with the series in a long time. He said that developers were just "doing their slant of something that has happened before." But as Mercury Steam reinvented Castlevania , they'd want to do the same thing for Contra . He wants to bring the franchise to the mainstream; it shouldn't just be for the hardcore:

"We are hardcore gamers, we played those games, but there are a lot of people that don’t know what Contra is. They have no idea. There is a massive audience out there; they play Call of Duty and love those games, but they don't know what Contra is. I think if we were going to reintroduce something to that audience, it has to be new and unique. It's got to stand out. It's got to have a new idea, something really cool about it that's never been done before."

Well, that's all true. There is indeed a massive audience out there who loves shooters, and a large portion of that audience has never played a Contra game. The question is whether or not that name carries any commercial cache anymore, and whether or not Mercury Steam would make a FPS or TPS… That makes a very big difference, yes?

Well, that's assuming you want the game to compete in the AAA space. Contra doesn't need to. They just need to look to games like Capcom's Bionic Commando: Rearmed and their upcoming Strider. They remain true to their game playing roots and they deliver on the look and feel fans want.

Come to think of it, Street FIghter 4 fulfills that as well.

They need to pay more attention to the source material if they plan to do this. Dropped the ball on Castlevania's identity.

Did these guys not play Hard Corps: Uprising? Cause that was a Contra game and it was anything but generic. I would also say that it did quite a bit new for the series, even if it wasn't NEW new stuff.

Temjin is right. Contra doesn't need to compete in the AAA space. In fact, I really don't see how those two go together.

Okay, but this is the problem with him saying that not many people can play a hardcore game. Contra IS loved for being hardcore, not its story, or anything like that.

There is no reason for them to make this appeal to the masses when it never has and it never needs too. There are plenty of FPS/TPS games on the market for people who want easy shooters.

I would hate if they tried to make contra 3D, a TPS and easier. That wouldn't be Contra it would just be called Contra.

Contra is a hardcore 2D sidescroller bullet hell shooter, nothing more nothing less.

I really don't get the point of taking an IP that is known for being something and then trying to make it something that it is not to appeal to more people. Just make a new stinking IP then, or is the IP to get series fans to impulse buy?

I just lost a lot of respect for Mercury steam. Even though I liked the new castlevania game, they didn't reinvent anything they just took Castlevania and made it play like God of War, with some difference but it copied that games formula.

If they make a cover based shooter that plays like Gears of War I will cry, as that will be the biggest bastardization of one of my favourite franchises of all time. And for what to get the CoD fans who won't play it anyway to play it? Good grief I can't believe devs are still trying this failure of a tactic.

Do it Xbox Ninja Gaiden Style (all new game with ALL the old contra games (NES – PS2) tucked in as integrated extras) and ya might have somethin' there.
