Flight fans, this is of you.

One of the most popular and acclaimed franchises is returning exclusively to the PlayStation platform. Today, Namco Bandai has announced that Ace Combat Infinity will release as a free-to-play downloadable title on the PlayStation Network later this year.

Featuring an all-new story campaign, co-op multiplayer, and "features that are important to fans," Infinity is poised to deliver. Obviously, free-to-play means it won't cost you anything to download the game, but you'll have to shell out for any additions and upgrades you may want. Said Namco Bandai Games executive Olivier Comte:

"The Ace Combat franchise has evolved dramatically over the years, but never before have we been able to offer its amazing graphics and tactical action for free."

The game will boast all sorts of extra content, although they didn't go into specific detail. Ace Combat veteran developer Project Aces is behind the project, and it's interesting that they opted to go free-to-play exclusively on the PS3. The franchise has been multiplatform for some time now, but don't forget that it all began on the PlayStation platform.

I was sold on this game once it was announced exclusive to the PS3. Yes, that sounds fanboy of me, but you know what? It's because I am…

F2P makes a ton of sense when you consider that PlayStation is home to another F2P game in War Thunder (on the PS4), so I can see AC:I carving out a nice niche on the PS3 since there will be no direct competition.

I am a die hard Ace Combat fan who purchased a 360 for AC06. Little did I know, but the franchise began a decline after it's involvement with MS and it was evident in AC:AH and it's massive western style influences.

My only concern is that Project Aces returns to the root of the series. By this I mean no DFM and no COD of the skies, as PA/Namco was so fond of talking about with Assault Horizon. I know how to fly a plane, so please… do not force me into Hollywood style dogfights.

Either way, Namco will get plenty of my money.

I kinda like this idea, free to play and pay what you want. I will check this out later in the year.

Another reason I don't need PS4 this year. I just hope it's more like the old games. I really enjoy Ace Combat, but couldn't make heads nor tails of the Assault Horizon demo, and passed it by.

I'll be downloading this title exclusive for PlayStation 3 system (…..I can't help myself)

I'm really digging how aggressive Namco is being with this free-to-play model. I've already engaged a lot of value from Tekken Revolution, something that appears to grow with value as time goes on.

I don't have that game, so would you mind going into specifics about the model it uses?

Because there will be no full game, just bits and pieces until nobody will buy any more of them

Agreed – I find the constant, repetitive monetisation of F2P titles painful. I'll play the next AC regardless, like I'll get into War Thunder, but I wish they'd have a "pay X, unlock everything" option.

We don't know what Project Aces is or isn't going to offer with Infinity, so why speculate worse case scenario?

I like Tekken Revolution but I'm not sure I'm big on the idea of Ace Combat going Free to Play. In fact, as much as I liked Tekken Revolution, I can't help but imagine how much better it'd be if Namco had made the effort to make it a full game. This free-to-play is a worrying trend.

First of all, to all of you complaining: just shut up! You are complaining even if they throw it for free?? Are you serious?? This is why many developers have very difficult times trying to satisfy gamers. Pff!! you complain even if it`s free… It´s like saying "oh no that game's very expensive, so I pass. Oh no, that game is free, I pass". Just try to be grateful morons, because the Playstation brand has many relationships with so many studios. in fact, this particular generation Sony has made a major effort with so many things for free (HOME, PS+, themes, discounts, free DLC, etc.), of course there are a lot they charge for, but come on!!! Oh, and not to mention online multiplayer is still free… *sigh*

Staying on topic, I can't wait for this. It will be beautiful. Also, I hope it has a good intro movie like in the Unsung War, with a great song by the way (Blurry, Puddle of Mudd). The story in that game was very good too.

So, in simple words hope it gets back to it's roots because when they went to M$soft (Ace combat), they unsurprisingly went to the abyss.
