Naughty Dog On Jak 4: “No Plans Now; We Tried And Failed”

Well, damnit.

I still remember when Jak & Daxter: The Precursor Legacy took the platforming world by storm when it released for the PS2 back in 2001. After that, the dynamic duo went their separate ways, and fans have been clamoring for a reunion. Or if not a reunion, at least a fourth Jak entry.

There has always been rumors concerning development of the title. And now it seems that in fact, Naughty Dog did attempt it. But sadly, it just didn't work out. In a recent "Ask Me Anything" session at Reddit , some fans asked Neil Druckmann and Bruce Straley about the future of the IP. Druckmann responded:

"No plans. We gave it a shot at the beginning of the project and couldn't make it work for ourselves."

He added later:

"We tried and failed. 🙁 Maybe in the future we'll try again."

On the plus side, Naughty Dog delivered not one but two amazing new IPs this generation ( Uncharted , The Last Of Us ), so we probably shouldn't complain too much. Still, I'd like to see Jak return at some point.

Coincidentally I just finished Jak 3 for the first time yesterday. Now having completed all three titles I have to say my favorite was the first game. It was much more a pure platformer. It's scope was simplistic but the fun of quality platformer style play kept it entertaining all the way through. I thought Jak 3 had a lot of breadth but it's too much of a melting pot of ideas (and what's with the overkill amounts of time limited mini-games?). The game play felt derivative in trying to be too many games. I really wish they would've left the guns and shooting to Ratchet. The Jak games need a strafe and lock-on mechanism, something that woefully bothered me here. Anyway, Jak2 and Jak3 were still good. I would really like to see Naughty Dog attack it again.
Really, I would've been very pleased with Uncharted DF, and Uncharted 2, The Last of Us, and a PS3 Jak game. U3 was great and all but I could've lived without it having U2 instead. I prefer that one anyway overall.

speaking of jak, I never finished the Daxter game (psp) I found the platforming quite fun at least for long trips (was on a bus for 8hrs)

I only played one of these about a thousand years ago on PS2. It's hard to imagine them getting the sales of NDs grittier games in the current climate. You'd think they'd pass it down to an up-and-coming team.

eh, im much more excited to see them create two new IPs, then they can go back to whatever franchise they wish.
they created a really cool unique title with the last of us so im really excited and intrigued with what else they would come up with given a blank canvas.
plus we are at the start of a new generation, if you dont see new IPs at the start of a new generation your chances aint too great to see them at all!

Have Sanzaru Games do it then! They've proven themselves worthy with Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time! They obviously know platforms and are very respectful of the series.

Make this happen dammit!
