For a title that's only available on one platform, this is very impressive, wouldn't you say?
Today, Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCEI) announced that Naughty Dog's latest masterpiece, The Last Of Us , has sold 3.4 million units worldwide as of July 3. It only took three weeks for the critically lauded title to hit that number.
The press release says the game "has surpassed all sales expectations to become the fastest-selling PS3 title of 2013." After landing over 30 perfect scores from various sources, gamers everywhere responded. Featuring an excellent story, memorable characters, and a survival-based style of gameplay that forces you to adapt and remain vigilant, The Last Of Us is a mammoth achievement. Said Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida:
"These sales figures are a testament to the blockbuster quality of The Last of Us. The teams at Naughty Dog are true visionaries and their storytelling capabilities are second to none, this title is an undisputed demonstration of that. SCE continues to be committed to delivering unique gameplay experiences that redefine the interactive entertainment industry and The Last of Us is a perfect example."
Let's see how many more it can sell!

Best game of this generation.
The only other game that comes close is Uncharted 2 I think.
Both developed by Naughty Dog, further cementing their place in the top spot of the best devs this console generation. I cannot wait to see what they will come up with on the PS4!
i wish i could see the reaction at Naughty Dog when information like this comes out
Great game and even though I had some issues with the game it really does deserve these sales because it is every bit better than the games that are getting these kind of sales figures.
I would love for this exclusive to get close to call of duty numbers, that would make me stoked.
Hopefully this means they will make more games in the Last of Us universe 🙂
Once again, there is more proof that Naughty Dog is the premiere developer in the industry right now.
That is quite the achievement, ND deserves all the accolades they get as far as I'm concerned.
So happy the team is getting enormous recognition and financial rewards for this game. One of my favorites of all-time, no question. And selfishly, I'm so happy that Naughty Dog, maybe the best developers in the business right now, are so far into the black that they will keep making fantastic games for the foreseeable future. Nicely done, guys.
Another score for exclusivity! Take that you hoards of mutliplat titles!
Very Deserving. The consumers are giving this game what its due. Congrats to ND.
Well, it shipped 3.4 million, actual sales are closer to 2 million, but it's still impressive and deserved. Strong marketing, a lot of review hype/buzz and the quality of the developer and the title itself, it was a natural hit.
That is an idiotic statement. Sony included digital sales as well so these are not "shipped" how you put it.
Oh stop it with your rational thinking and facts sawao!
Seriously though, I've never seen such dedicated dislike for a game that deserves all the accolades its received. The Last of Us gets troll juices a flowin!
The press release reads SHIPPED(which are sales to Sony since retailers buy then) and the actual sales numbers are 2 million in two weeks since it released on a Friday which is IMPRESSIVE and DESERVED as I wrote above. Now I know drone logic dictates that reading and absorbing written facts are only necessary when beneficial to the mythos, but if Sony had sold an additional 1.4 million in digital sales, they would have stated it. But, hey, don't let me stop you from tripping over your own ineptitude. Fill in whatever blanks you feel the need to to satisfy your narrative..
You need not even check the comments section of articles for this game to know. The trolls are calling it overrated. It's easy to call great games as such, anyway. But who cares? The vast majority of those who played this game agree that it's amazing.
Awwww, look, now you've gone and made the troll mad. He pulled out his CAPS lock. Funny he made his entrance shilling for MS and now spends the duration of his time bashing one of Sony's best exclusives. Go figure.
Hey, here's that thumbs up you so desperately crave, drone. I know without then you feel your entire existence is worthless. Now, run along. Sony's butt is getting cold without your face firmly planted in its normal position.
Guys, don't you think you're behaving like jerks now? If the poor guy is only stating facts – and it looks to me he is – then why is that so tough to handle?
Two mill is still impressive, and stating facts has never been trolling.

The troll pulled that 2 mill number out his azz. You want facts? Here you go.

Just as sawao said, digital and physical copies make 3.4 million in 3 weeks. Dude needs to just give it up. His quest to drag The Last of Us through the dirt is a miserable failure.

I find that hard to believe, though Kid. That's a HUGE disparity between 3.4 and 2. Gamestops in my entire province were completely sold out. COMPLETELY. Even their warehouse was sold out. And if I wanted to buy it anywhere in the country online, I wasn't going to get it for less than $80. Luckily, my friend and I bought the last 2 copies from a hole-in-the-wall at a small town an hour out of the city at normal retail price.
Also, vgchartz has it at 1.71 mil sold as of June 22, and they -DEFINITELY- don't account for digital sales. I'm sure it's much higher than 1.71 since June 22… and when you add digital sales…. 3.4 sounds more realistic than 2 mil… Where are you getting that number, anyways?
The press release says SALES. I've got it in my email straight from Sony. Who exactly is sending you press releases, Kid?
SALES of Blu-Ray Disc and digital downloads are included in the 3.4 million number. Want me to forward you a copy?
Would you like to show me where you got the 2 million number from? Because by all means, if you don't have an agenda, you must've seen the 2 million number somewhere, right? So let's see it.

Yeah… I just can't believe there are 1.4 million copies lying around in wait when, as of last Thursday, my friend STILL can't find a copy anywhere.
It just doesn't line up. I'm not trying to be a jerk, Kid and Beam… I just don't see it. I can't understand how that could possibly be true given the actual evidence in front of me.
Say whatever you want to say but clearly you can't read. They are including digital sales. I live around the London area and there are no copies to be found anywhere! So if they "shipped" them I would like to know where the other 1.4 million are at. I need to get my own copy as well.
So, yeah, I was totally wrong about that My inbox stuff was saying shipped and I was only going by the official first two weeks sales which put it at just under 2.1 million. Which, yes, is physical copies ONLY. My apologies for any hurt feelings from my mistake.
For the record, I've actually had a pleasant discussion with Kid about The Last of Us story.
Underdog, I was in the EB Games (which is basically Gamestop) at Hillcrest Mall in Richmond Hill on Monday and they had about six copies of The Last of Us out on the shelf.
That makes sense since they get shipments of already released games on Tues, Thurs, or Fri's.
I'm just telling you what the manager of my local one told me. He also said they originally had 130 copies in their first few shipments before selling out. He also said they sold out, then their warehouse sold out.
Even if ND didn't want to you know Sony will force them to make another one. 😛
I don't know if I'd buy it. I know this and the uncharted series deserve the praise they get, but something about them don't draw me in. It could be because they are TPF; shooters don't really appeal to me at all. I've enjoyed inFAMOUS, but that's just about it.
It's not really a shooter. The shooting takes a backseat to the rest of the gameplay.
it's really mostly a stealth game.
Yea like Jawknee said, it has a TPS mechanic, but for this game the over the shoulder camera benefited greatly. But the gameplay doesnt focus on the shooting, so I wouldnt look into that to much.
You could get past most enemies if you really take the time to be patient and be stealthy. If shooting is not for you, there are other ways. The story alone is worth buying this game for.
I did get a little MGS reminiscent.
Me too but I would go even further and say it was better in many respects. The AI in MGS feels dated. I got to a point where I could remember their patterns. In the Last of Us I restarted this one encounter like 20 times and was tricked at least once or twice every time before I was able to clear the area.
Human enemies are definitely smarter. I'm sure that's intentional.
I would have liked some more interesting ways to do my stealthing than tossing bricks and bottles though, not to be a dildo about it.
Tossing bricks and bottles isn't really stealth though unless you're using them to lure people into group to toss cocktail. You hit a guy with a bottle and it gives away your position. There were many ways to go about each situation. Choke dudes out, shiv them, use the bow, distract them with a brick then toss a Molotov or nail bomb, there was an area where there were nail bomb traps and I managed to lure a dude next to one with a bottle then I tossed another bottle at the trip wire setting off the bomb. Really how you play the game is up to you. It doesn't force you to do stealth one way or another. You gets da choices son! ;P you just gotta get creative with how you play the game.

I do love the bow, nothing makes me happier than puttin an arrow through somebody's head.
Indeed. It's especially satisfying when you hear a clean thud and your arrow is still intact and able to be retrieved.
Sonic, it would mean that you'd actually have to stop playing Soul Calibur 5 for a while 😉
you can tell just by the games that ND puts out,
that they love doing what they do and not just for the money.
nice , hope they sell few more millions ,i enjoyed it so much, now can you please work on TLOU2 and make it on PS4 🙂
Congrats to ND. I really can't wait to see ND's next games on the PS4.
I'm still working on completing the game, slowly but surely.
The best game I played this year (2013) so far. Second best is Bioshock Infinite.
Indeed. Bioshock was fantastic as well.
Infinite was a fantastic trip.
I hope this game will sell 20 million copies!! best ps3 exclusive game of the year! ^_^
