When avid Demon's Souls and Dark Souls followers heard the upcoming sequel would be a little more "accessible," they started to worry.

After all, it's the stiff challenge of those games that sets them apart. And if developer From Software was easing off on that challenge, a lot of die-hard followers would be very unhappy.

So, Dark Souls II director Yui Tanimura tried to explain what they meant in a new Game Informer interview :

"The reason why we used the word accessible was not to say that the game is going to be easier by any means.

We’re maintaining the difficulty and we think the challenges are required. What we meant was, there are certain aspects of the game where it didn’t really have a direct connection to the sense of satisfaction of overcoming. There were things that were a little bit time consuming or a little bit tedious that we wanted to streamline–sort of carve away all the fat so we could really deliver the lean pure expression of what Dark Souls tries to communicate, which is the sense of satisfaction of overcoming."

Essentially, that new "accessibility" is a "more streamlined experience" that will provide us with "the more pure essence of Dark Souls ." However, at the same time, Tanimura did say that "balance is something important" and they have taken care to "fine-tune" many of the game's tougher challenges. …now, it all depends on how you define "fine-tune," doesn't it? What do the fans think of this clarification?

I cannot wait for this freaking game. I know there are a few people here who are turned off by the Souls games, but for me it doesn't get any better.

I'm really interested in where they take the lore with this entry as there are a few theories floating around about where it fits in and in what chronological order.

Super excited for this.

Both Dark and Demon's gave me some of the best gaming moments I've ever had.

I just hope DS2 can deliver, but because of the "fine-tuning" I will not buy on launch.

Ready for this game! But developers need to realize when doing interviews to avoid the the phrases 'more accessible' and ' like CoD'. The gamers that actually take time to read what they have to say HATE to hear those.

Zach, did you ever play any of the Souls games? there was an anime that reminded me a lot of these games. What was it called? "Push X to respond"
lol sorry i've been playing to much Deadly premonition. who knew such a ridiculous game could be so damn satisfying to play.

I am assuming Knightzane is referring to Berserk since the game has a lot of homages to it.

I think from everything I've seen of this game and impressions from reporters that played it at E3, it's still as hard as ever. There's always room to improve games, even the best of the best have their flaws and cutting away the fat on some games can improve the experience. Nothing he says here sounds like he's trying to target the mainstream crowd.

After watching some gameplay I was impressed with that turtle knight enemy, I think I get what he try to say, Dark Souls was very obtuse they didn't tell you much what to do, probably they would make it easier to explore.

I love the souls games. I like the fact that you make a mistake you pay for it. They are a great challenge. I look forward to playing Dark Souls 2.

I really hope that they add voice chat. That is the only thing the game is missing. The fact that you could use cross game chat on the 360 version actually made me think that it was the superior version, which shouldn't be the case

Yet again their explication still answer nothing about what is getting streamlined ( maybe something more clear about how to get covenant/world tendencies stuff ).

With that said i would recommend watching IGN e3 live video of dark souls 2 and see with you re own eyes that it s still challenging ( + a look at 4 class including a dual wield class ) .

gotta love the reactions and pathetic attempts of fencing from pretty much every developer these days.
really bugs me, we cant choose one side or the other it has to be everything.
you cant go half and half, you either go one way or the other.
trying to do both ends up, with, well, dishonoured.
such a brilliant awesome fun game if you want to be little hitler.
but if you want to be the saint and not kill a single soul well its about as fun, entertaining, and enjoyable as watching grass grow while having bamboo shoved under your nails!
there is no sitting on the fence, choose one or the other!

The souls games are probably my two favourite games on the PS3 this generation.

I am not going to buy this until I have heard from the hardcore fans whether or not it lives up to its predecessors. No matter how good the reviews I need to know that this game jives with the fans.

I am always concerned when I hear the words streamlined and essence used by devs. I think they might be saying they are getting rid of the grind because those aspects were tedious. The problem is some people like grinding items and levels and gear you know.

If however they found a way to get rid of the grind while making the game still challenging then that would be fine.

Really its about the challenge, I like these games because you were required to play them completely different than any other game. You had to think not just button mash, and to me that is a very important quality in games. I like being tested because I know if I play something long enough I will beat it 🙂
