It's almost time for a lucrative payday. If you can survive, of course. That's key.

Today, publisher 505 Games and developer Overkill Software have announced that Payday 2 will be released in August. We knew that, though; the interesting part of the press release is that this sequel won't be limited to the digital space.

That's right, while the original Payday: The Heist was only available as a digital download, the new effort can be purchased digitally or in physical format. It will be released globally at retail brick-and-mortar stores for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Said Payday 2 game director David Goldfarb:

"We have a bit of a problem here at Overkill – there are just too many great ideas and none that we were really happy to throw out – so PAYDAY 2 has become just too big to reserve release on Xbox Live® and PlayStation®Network alone."

505 Games Head of Global Brand Tim Woodley added that they're "expecting great things" from the sequel. If you want to learn more about the game in question, check out our recent preview . It could be a ton of fun, especially if you've got some willing buddies. Take the high-risk job and hope it pays off…'cuz if not, things could be over really fast.

Hmmm, must be huge since Super Street Fighter IV Arcade Edition is 18GB and I downloaded that just fine. Looks like an interesting game. Never had the pleasure of playing the first one even though I own it.

They're just saying there will be a retail release too. ( Super Street Fighter IV has a disk release)

Not that it can't be downloaded.

( its too big to not offer a disk version)

You can download full games off of both XBL and PSN, so I doubt that's it. It's just marketing.

I think they are just referring to the "label" of the game…Downloadable or Full Retail release title. It makes sense to sell a retail copy once games get beyond a certain size to ensure you can reach as many customers as possible.

That said, I'm sure they will offer a digital copy for Payday 2 as well.

always wanted a big budget heist game.
this wont be it im 99.999999% sure off.
but i wish someone would put the money it deserves into it, and make it something truly special!
sure its going to be controversial, and the media will be calling it the bank robbing simulator, but who cares!
id be really cool to have a big budget heist game,, from start to finish.
planing out the heists, hiring the right men for the job, or more importantly the right skills, to then the getaway and hiding and spending of the cashola.
come to think of it they could make it a massive split case game, you play 1 level as the robbers, than replay that level as the cops trying to stop them and hunting them down.
would work really well for a murder mystery game too……..
