You had to assume this was coming. No-brainer.

Electronic Arts and Disney have announced a new multi-year agreement that will result in the development and publication of new games based on the legendary "Star Wars" franchise. Who's psyched?

The agreement states that EA will produce new Star Wars titles for a "core gaming audience" and unsurprisingly, they will be released across "all interactive platforms." Disney will retain the rights to generate new stuff for the mobile, social, tablet and online markets. Said EA Labels president Frank Gibeau:

"Every developer dreams of creating games for the Star Wars universe. Three of our top studios will fulfill that dream, crafting epic adventures for Star Wars fans."

Currently, we know that DICE and Visceral Games are working on a new Star Wars game; it's going to utilize the fresh Frostbite 3 engine. BioWare will continue to support Star Wars: The Old Republic, and there's no word on the status of Star Wars 1313 .

Added Gibeau:

"The new experiences we create may borrow from films, but the games will be entirely original with all new stories and gameplay."

This is one series that will never die. And how much did Lucas sell "Star Wars" for again? Over $2 billion or something like that? I wonder if anyone thought the franchise would be worth that kind of money when it first launched way back in 1977…

EA, please make Battlefront 3. Don't turn it into "Unlock the Dark Side for 19.99" Instead, pretend your not EA and make it a game without the micrtransactions that should be free in the first place. Battlefront 2 was my favorite ps2 FPS. Nothing came on par with it. So much fun.

Weird… Many are hoping that EA will not behave like EA (and its current trend of infusing their games with questionable DLC crap) and that somehow, someway, Pandemic Studios (a developer that EA destroyed within a year after acquiring it) is going to come back from its ashes and make Battlefront 3.

I guess we could be happy that such games (KOTOR, B3) are coming. Its just that some of the details behind their development (and the requirements forced upon consumers) might not be something to celebrate.

This is freakin' EA after all. A company that presently caters to shareholders, not gamers.

BTW, Steam users are not too happy about the news.

I wouldn't mind a Star Wars title that played like a modern action game. I was never a huge fan but I liked it and surely the new films will be better than the recent trilogy.

It would be nice to see some high quality star wars games, if only they would make some that are rpgs and not just action games.

I felt a great disturbance in the Force… as if millions of voices suddenly cried out in terror and were suddenly silenced. I fear something terrible has happened.

They pretty much have. In the past 10 years, there have been 3 pc exclusive titles (2 MMOs & an RTS) released, compared to 11 console games.

There's rarely been a bad Star Wars game, and considering the developers involved, that trend looks to continue. I'm especially excited about the possibility of Bioware putting out a new, offline KOTOR.

A new KoTOR would be great. I broke out the ol' Xbox and have been playing the original, which I still view as one of the best games ever made.
