I was just thinking about this the other day- We really don't know what Thatgamecompany is currently working on, but they must be experiencing totally ridiculous pressure.
I mean, isn't that inevitable after the amazing acclaim received by last year's award-winning Journey ? What didn't that game win? It was one of the few titles released this generation that seemed to receive a universal thumbs-up, and was even cited as being the epitome of gaming creativity and innovation. It really was a beacon in the midst of an industry saturated with shooters, action games and other generic, gritty adventures. it was just so refreshing .
The timing was perfect, the execution was pretty darn close to perfect, and the results couldn't have been better from a gamer and industry standpoint. However, doesn't this all translate to tremendous pressure for the future? How the hell do you top something like Journey ? And given the demanding nature of gamers, will "disappointed" articles be inevitable because the new project isn't up to Journey 's standards? Don't forget that the new project will likely be multiplatform, so it'll be under the scrutiny of many more gamers. Thatgamecompany has gotten progressively better over time ( flOw to Flower to Journey ), but I'm not sure the latest effort can be topped.
And if it isn't, I'm worried that too many people will get all bitter. At this rate, the game can't just be "good;" in fact, it has to be beyond "great;" it has to qualify as an elite title. I don't know about the developers in question but if it were me, I'd feel awfully stressed over the current situation. When you've hit a peak, you have to wonder just how much higher you can go, and if it's even possible…
