Nielsen Survey: PS3 Owners Are Starting To Stream Like Mad

What did you do with your PlayStation 3 in 2012?

According to a recent Nielsen survey , PS3 owners spent a whopping 23% of their overall console time streaming video-on-demand services such as Netflix and Hulu Plus. That's up 10% from 2011.

The participants in the survey were aged 13 and up and it's clear that the PS3 has become a fixture of living room entertainment. It's also notable that 32% of the time spent with the Wii involved streaming services. The Xbox 360 is used most often for online gaming (which is no surprise), as the 360 is least utilized for offline gaming; the Wii leading with the PS3 second. It's always interesting to see such results, especially when you remember that several decades ago, video game consoles did only one thing- play video games.

And it's not a bad thing that they've expanded. They can be entertainment hubs in a great many homes because you don't have to be a gamer to own a game console. It just does so many other things and that will be an even more accurate statement when the next generation rolls around…

I don't agree with this data.

I have never streamed anything on my PS3, and neither has anyone I have ever met. In Australia we don't even have that much streaming content on the PS3. Nothing worth looking into.

Survey of 2,500+ general population consumers (including game console users) in the U.S. conducted in October 2011 and October 2012.

So you live in Austrailia? Hey, so does your pizza rock over there? Like, it's extra thick on meat and toppings and our American style pizza is weenie-like in comparison.

I'm in Australia and I actually use Netflix haha. It's possible to work around the blocks in place. The only service we have comparable is Quickflix and it's a joke. Netflix has more Australian content offered and just plain more content. It's not their fault or even Netflix for not entering our market though. It's the content distributors making it so hard to negotiate licenses outside the US or any new region.

Actually our servings of everything are pretty much across the board smaller than in America, pizza's included Temjin has been my experience. I've visited the States and I noticed that.

I'll take a pizza with tuna, onion, mixed peppers and smoked sausage with extra cheese and sauce, cook to well done please – I want a bit of color on the cheese, and not just barely melted cheese flavored mush. 🙂

Hard to believe this because Nielsen is useless when it comes to anything online. A lot of good tv shows were cancelled because the company decided not to delve in online monitoring.

If this is based on the same story I read earlier the poll is based on only 2500 people questioned. These types of polls always bother me when they say "this many people say this" based off of such a tiny fraction of the total number of users.

This poll represents 0.00003% of PS3's sold, don't know the actual number of users but still, ask a few more to make a whole percentage point or don't release the data. I don't stream a damn thing because the services in Canada simply blow ass.

That's how polls work. They ask questions to a tiny, but (hopefully) representative, sample of the group in question and then extrapolate their findings to the population in general. Polls often have some flaw in their methodology, but that flaw is hardly ever related to their sample being too small.

Polls are based on statistical sampling. 2500 users isn't a bad sample size. The sample selection criteria matters, but as long as you know the sample selection criteria, you can draw conclusions.

Of course the questions can shape the answers. Questions like "How many hours a week do you use your PS3 to stream video content from an online provider?" might have answers like 1-2, 3-5, 6-9, 10-15, 16+ and 0. Depending on where the '0' answer is placed it may be missed by some people and they will feel obligated to choose one of the other choices. Alternately questions can be phrased so that there is only one reasonable answer despite the face that the underlying question has multiple acceptable answers. You can always skew the results by shaping the questions you ask to the answers you want to get. Though you kind of have to take on trust that a survey like this is not done with the intent of skewing the result.

Netflixs blows. I'm stunned at how little this service has in the way of movies. It consistently does not have the movie I'm looking for. How is this service still listed as a leader in movie streaming? Vudu however is great! Love that one.

I use my PS3 as a media server streamer. Set Windows media player 11 to share on my PC and I look at family vacation pics in slide show mode with a sound track. It's actually quite moving if you have the right songs playing. I stream my MP3's through it too. Got it playing through a nice surround sound system. I expect PS4 will be even better in this area.

Most all of the movies I look for on Netflix are only available on actual DVD. They don't have a ton of movies available for immediate streaming.

I just have to take this opportunity to vent how absolutely awful Hulu plus is. I only tried a 1 month trial of it for the first time a week ago, and it took me less than an hour to realize it was the most worthless piece of junk I've ever seen!!

Not only does it have very few shows/movies interesting to me, but hey that's all subjective, but man I had no idea you had to watch like 7-8 commercial breaks for a single tv episode. Holy c**p! There's no way in hell I'd pay anything for that, and well wouldn't even use it for free so I could just as well cancel the free trial 'cause I'll never use it again…

It only made me realize how much better Netflix is, better content, better quality video and most importantly NO COMMERCIALS!! And I'm not even that big a fan of Netflix, since they don't have a lot of the shows I want to watch…

I've never tried vudu though, how is that one compared to netflix/hulu?

I totally agree on Hulu +. I can handle watching add with my shows and I can handle paying a monthly fee for my shows. But when you make me buy a subscription to watch ads (as Hulu does), then I start to have a problem.

But guess what? About 10:30- 11:00 on PCT the servers go bonk and you cant stream &^%&^ on PSN-netflix, I have to turn on the "other box" which screws with the idea of using my nice sony headphones so the kids can sleep in the room next to me.Everything in the house will stream at this time but my PS3.Just sayin.
