There's a name you might not have heard for a while. Think Square Enix will get the third entry right?

According to Japanese publication Famitsu (as cited by GameSpot ), a new Drakengard will be hitting the PlayStation 3 in Japan at some point in the future. The developer is Access Games ( Deadly Premonition , Lord of Arcana ), and original members of the Drakengard design team – who also worked on the well-received Nier – will be involved.

Yoko Taro is on board as the creative director, Kimihiko Fujisaka will handle character design, Keiichi Okabe will be the music director, and Takamasa Shiba will produce. The main characters are sisters called Zero and One and they have the ability to cast spells via songs. Their personalities constantly clash, too, as one is more quiet and reserved while the other is outgoing and brash. As you might expect, the gameplay will feature both air combat and ground combat.

Drakengard first released on the PS2 in 2004 and a sequel followed in 2006. If you're wondering, neither fared very well in the eyes of critics, but maybe Square Enix just needed better hardware for the ambitious ground/air gameplay combo. There's no knowing if Drakengard 3 (if that's what it'll be called) will come to the US. Would you want it if it did?

I love the whole idea of dragonriding enough to have enjoyed both the Drakengards, though I recognize they were not top-notch games in many ways.

The first Drakengard, however, stands out to me as featuring the most bizarrely twisted endings in the history of video games. Seriously.

The first ending is rather bittersweet, but it resolves the plot. Then you get to unlock more endings in subsequent playthroughs. Now, my expectation was that these would be "better," happier, or at least less tragic endings. But we got five or so different endings, each more warped than the last, until we have some crazy thing with the world being overrun by giant flesh-eating blue babies.

The second Drakengard toned it down a bit, but man, the first went to some dark places.

I like the whole concept behind drakengard/drakengard 2 and I think the story is awesome, but damn the camera was annoying! You can't even enjoy the gameplay because of it. Hell, I wish they just turn it into a anime.

Was hoping to play Nier eventually and hopefully this 3rd drakengard can do a whole lot better.

Never heard of it, if 2 of them went bad how can it get continued and not… say… Grandia or something?

Gotta play em yourself to understand how great they were….at their time. Haha. At least they weren't something like…say..Lair. I'd probably say Drakengard is to dragons as ZoE is to Mechs.

I had fun with the first one and would probably try it out if the third got a US release.

I would need it for my collection. I have both Drakengards, and NieR at this point. They are great, albiet obscure titles, and I feel they needed more polish, so I would like to see how they would take another entry in the series. I will laugh though if the sisters' names are Popola and Devola.

i personally loved both games, the first was so very dark and twisted which was cool and the secondary characters gave it plenty of replayability. The second game was good too but departed from the dark themes for the most part and the camera made me want to throw the controller. If this gets a US release i would definitely get it

Still have the 1st Drakengard on my shelve. It was definitely a unique/dark game but enjoyable. Hate that Square announce a new title without releasing their previous announced game. I want to play FFX HD now!

If it is anything close to as good as NEIR I want it to come to NA. NEIR is still one of the most unique, weird and awesome games I have played on my PS3.

OMG, another game I used to play that I completely forgot about!! I remember this. As a kid, I played this. Now, there is a shooter I used to play but can't remember the title. Someday…. I'll somehow see the title.

I bought the first Drakengard when it came out, and loved it. When 2 came out, I didn't even know about its existence, because there was ZERO advertising, and missed out on it completely.

Suffice it to say, I was very disappointed to miss out on the sequel, but I would love for Drakengard 3 to come west.
