Kojima Doesn’t Mind The Idea Of More Metal Gear Spin-Offs

Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance was a highly entertaining spin-off. That much is definitely true.

And as for the idea of more spin-offs in the future, Metal Gear Solid guru Hideo Kojima isn't against the idea at all. In speaking to IGN , the legendary designer reflected on his successful collaboration with developer Platinum Games:

"Initially we thought this spin-off with Metal Gear Rising was kind of an exception; it was a new thing for us. But that said, it went remarkably well, and working with Platinum Games we were able to achieve a sort of synergy where the final product was greater than the sum of its parts."

Then Kojima was asked the million-dollar question: Would he be willing to let a Western studio work on a Metal Gear spin-off? After all, Platinum is still a Japanese development team. Here was Kojima's open-minded reply:

"You know, honestly it's not a matter of choosing a developer in Japan or in the West. It's not even an East versus West kind of thing. It's just finding somebody who can really understand the world and setting of Metal Gear. … You need to choose somebody who would understand the subtle nuances of the cultural aspects of the franchise. If we could find somebody who could understand that, who could handle it well, then that's definitely a possibility."

More and more Japanese developers are opting to work with Western designers these days, and some are straight-up outsourcing their projects to US and Europe-based studios. However, MGS without that patented Japanese flair somehow seems…wrong.

If that gonna leave him some time to do other non Metal Gear related projects I'm okay with it, Kojima deserves a break of the series.

Rising is the reason I'n not buying another Metal Gear if the main character is not Snake.

I think a spin-off with the most potential would be a game starring a young Boss and the Cobra Unit.

This site didn't report on it but Koji also expressed interest in a World War II Boss storyline.

hope they do another vengeance sequel, its SO much FUN!
the boss im up to now though is PISSING ME OFF!
so god dam hard died like 40 times now!
i just hope in the sequel they fix the god dam camera, and fix the controls.
sometimes when you go into the slow slice mode i hold L1 so it goes into slice mode than comes straight out and the enemy explodes.
gets really annoying especially when your almost dead and wanted to slice to rip their energy out to replenish yours.
another problem with the controls quite a few times id stand behind a enemy and tap circle and nothing would happen, gets really annoying!
so many times ive ended up running into enemies because of that.

Lol are you talking about Monsoon?

He was the hardest boss for me besides the final.

The game is definitely an absolute blast though. Finished it twice, now just cleaning up trophies for the Platinum.

The second playthrough was a lot more fun for me than the first, you feel like so much more of a badass.

Dose VR Missions….. jesus….. They are SO damned hard. Getting 1st in some of them seems impossible at first. Some of them it took like 30 attempts to get 1st.

think so.
its the one where you first find your rage and raiden is covered in a red electricity.
PISSING me off!
he keeps sweeping the ground, flicking me in the air, than diving on top of me and stabbing me.
really annoying because you cant block any of it, and the only part you can resist is when he dives onto you but for some reason every time i wiggle the sticks he just stabs me anyway, sometimes he jumps off but most the time he stabs me taking half my health off.
and he KEEPS doing it over and over and over again!
GGGGGGGGRRRRRRR havent had a boss battle piss me off this much since freaking mortal kombat!

Ehhh, I think traveling this road will lead Metal Gear into a mess. Re-vengeance was really out of context to the rest of the franchise and felt more close to a Metal Gear ac!d game. However they did set this with the timeline or most problematic after MGS4 so I can't brush it aside so easily.

I have to be honest I didn't think much of the PSP games either, Peace Walker was fun to play but the story was just an utter diversion from focusing on Big Boss. Looking back I would rather have just had them two games vanished and kept it at MGS3. I hope Ground Zeroes will cover more interesting aspects of the BIg Boss timeline which have more relevance to the series as a whole.

But regarding another 'spin off' If they give us the game Rising was meant to be set between MGS2-4 I would not complain, as long as it was not just so over the top and with an awful new cast like Re-Vengeance.

Well, Metal Gear Rising works, it really does. It works because it is based on Raiden, the character who was re-introduced in MGS4 as a cybornetic ninja badass. You could NEVER go back to MGS2, with little Snake wanna-be Raiden, it wouldn't have made sense.

So the game was based on a cyborg ninja… and I think they pulled it off really well.

The only thing I don't like about the setting, is that now…. everyone is a damn cyborg… SOOOOO what is Snake supposed to do when we eventually get his sequel? Snake can't take on a cyborg.

The cast of MGR wasn't entirely new, they are all people who are part of Raidens life during his off screen adventures. During MGS2-MGS4 I think. It is just that MGR is the first time we ever see them. Read Raiden's metal gear wiki page for the details.

KojiPro…..

Who else could you do a spinoff about?

the Cobra unit? another Big Boss? They technically aren't spin offs.

MGR is a spin-off.

So the question remains….who else could you make a spin-off about?!
