Last year's Rainbow Moon was a breath of fresh air and one of the best downloadable titles of the generation.

The old-school RPG/strategy fans loved it and now, they've got something else to look forward to: The same development team is working on a new fantasy role-playing project called Rainbow Skies .

They've teamed up with indie developer SideQuest Studios to work on the new game, which isn't exactly a sequel or even a follow-up effort, as it boasts new characters, new story, and a whole new world. Said SideQuest CEO Marcus Pukropski:

Built on Rainbow Moon’s system, Rainbow Skies is a completely new game that is set in a new world with new characters and a new story. A lot of feedback has been taken into consideration and we are confident that Rainbow Skies will offer an even deeper and more versatile gameplay experience, while staying absolutely true to its roots. We can’t wait to show more of Rainbow Skies to our fans."

There will be a bunch of new gameplay features, many of which will be appreciated by those who provided that feedback to the designers.

Check 'em out:

Okay, so it isn't a sequel, but it's basically a bigger and better Rainbow Moon , and we're totally down with that. Rainbow Skies is slated to hit consoles and handhelds in late 2014.

Bring it to Vita at the same time guys!

This is awesome news! I'm a little apprehensive about the added feature that "Monsters can be caught, upgraded, and become part of the player’s party". Please don't turn Rainbow Moon into a Pokemon clone….

I kinda like that idea. Hope you could put two monsters together and make a stronger one. Like the enemies did later in RM.

Also you do know Ben said " Rainbow Skies is slated to hit consoles and handhelds in late 2014." At the end of the article right?

Thanks man, I missed that! Huzzzah!

I'm open to the monster thing but I hope it doesn't alter the gameplay dramatically. I'd rather they not change the focus of the combat but I'm fine if it's a subtle enhancement…

This Monster thing makes me think of Disgaea. Where you can create monsters to use in your party under you're main characters. Just in RS you have to capture them to start out.

I do feel you on the change the focus of combat and altered gameplay.

It was a good game. But it got boring pretty fast to me.

Wait wait wait. I LOVE the pets idea. Apparently Poopsie did not get the memo about Ni No Kuni. Raising pets and leveling them up was part of the fun! Guess I will have to get this after all!

The strategy part made me quit RM, it was almost my thing though.

How come it made you quit World?

Yes I'm liking this news. I really liked RM. What I liked the most tho was the pacing. I mean its was kinda like on rails a bit the first half of the game. You can explore but just not too much. But after that halfway point it felt like a whole different game.

The only thing I didn't like was if a charatcer was not in you party they didn't level up at all. Unless you used them. All of my first 3 characters were all way passed the last 3 by the time I got them.

Why would they improve if they didn't DO anything? Osmosis?

When I am not playing Dust at the moment I am playing Rainbow Moon and I love it. I was late to get the game as I have been out of work but no matter it is still a great game. Looking forward to this next entry, it is giving me the feeling of Jade Cocoon on the PS1 which also was a great game.

Rainbow moon was interesting for a little bit, and very hardcore in the beginning. Very easy to die, and you had to make smart choices. But then 20 hours later, it was fetch quest after fetch quest and nonstop grinding. I don't know why people loved it so much, maybe they were just RPG-starved.

Hey reryan, that's why I said it felt a little bit on rails in the beginning. But they let explore more the middle of the game.

Also it being hard was a good thing, I think. It made you have make very smart chioces in battle. Not just go half a** into battle. They were a few time I said f*** I messed up or wrong move. They definitely had you need strong strategy moves in battle or strong prep before battle. More then anything in or for boss fights. Some battles you would think would be easy turned into oh crap going to hurt. There were a few battles I won by shear luck. I think that was the fun part about it.
