Reboots have been popular this generation. Final Fantasy needs a reboot more than any other franchise in my estimation, but survival/horror fans might disagree with that.

Those followers don't really like the direction Resident Evil has taken over the past several years, and after the poorly received Operation Raccoon City and the highly controversial Resident Evil 6 last year, maybe the iconic franchise desperately requires a reimagining.

And actually, it's possible. Capcom producer Maschika Kawata told Eurogamer that rebooting Resident Evil – perhaps with an open-world format – would be feasible, but they'd still have to "preserve what RE is and what makes it appealing to fans." Said Kawata:

"If we did [go with an open-world], we would want to preserve what Resident Evil is and what makes it appealing to fans, while also making it accessible to new players. It would almost entail having a slight reboot to get the series into a place where it would work with open-world gameplay. That's just a personal opinion.

A lot of decisions would have to be taken before something like that is done to the series, but… There is a possibility."

Currently, Kawata is working on the Resident Evil: Revelations port for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Wii U, which is slated to hit in May. But if they do provide us with a reboot of Resident Evil , would you like to see it go open-world? What other ideas might you have?

Ok im going to be the first one to say "NO!" For once, i don't want a game to be open world. Turning RE into a 3rd person shooter is one thing, but turning it completely away from what it could be is completely against everything the fans want. They make it open world, im never buying a RE game ever again.

It seems to me that he was asked if an open-world Resident Evil game was in the cards.

That's why he replied with an "If we did go with an open world". So the reboot would only happen IF they went with an open-world type game.

In regards to what they're actually going to do with the series, Kawata mentions that they're keeping a close eye on how Revelations performs on the HD consoles. Since they want to use that game as a template for future games.

So don't panic. Gotta put his comments in the proper context, people.

Could be cool but they don't really have much of a track record for "preserving" much of anything.

Maybe if they did a San Andrea's style turf war only Infected zone style thing with it they could make it fun. But all dreaming aside, I have no hope for Resident Evil anymore after 6. I really hated that game. The story was complete crap, and the gameplay was as well. I hated how every boss I fought I had to remind myself not to shoot it because it is invincible anyway and in a few minutes it will transform into something else. I really despise how every single boss in that game came back about 6 times. It drained the game of any fun. Because instead of being creative they decided that Irrelevant boss battles where bullets don't matter until Final Form would somehow be more fun, in a game where people stock up on ammo for the boss fights only to find out after wasting it all in a minute that those shots don't count until a cut scene happens

I find the idea of an open-ended zombie apocalypse game very interesting, so long as it doesn't simply consist of running around shooting zombies.

I do have to ask, why does it have to be a reboot? Or more like, why does it have to be RE? A different game from RE isn't RE, slapping the name on it just to milk the title is annoying. Are they simply afraid the game would not be able to sell on its own merits?

On another note, "Final Fantasy needs a reboot more than any other franchise in my estimation" how would they even do that? Aside from direct sequels, every game is different from the last. If anything, I never understood why it's even a series. I love JRPGs, but I do wonder why companies tend to give so many games the same name when all they have in common is the genre and general style (and in the case of FF, the style tends to change as well). Is it that hard to come up with new names?

I think it would be a interesting idea. Capcom to me has to do something to revitalize the franchise.

Like every other game this gen…. ugh this sounds awful already. We dont want an open world, we want tight corridors and atmospheric environments. The great thing about Racoon City is that it really began to drain on you with its dreary streets and music. I Agree that Capcom needs to re-think a few things but a reboot like DmC… Eh it just disregards all their previous work. which is why I find reboots so distasteful.

I don't know if a final fantasy reboot is possible? Isn't every number technically a reboot unless they do a sequel on it or remake…

That's the beauty of Final Fantasy, it's placed itself in a position where each new numeral title can essentially be a reboot, however they still keep similar creatures and features which keep it Final Fantasy. I wish they never did sequels and just delivered unique titles. I am still waiting on Final Fantasy XV to see if S-E can carry the series on after this Lightning Returns mess…

RE is not the position to get away with it though. It has set each title as a continuation of the story and obviously brought back returning characters. For RE to do a remake it just denies all it's past and starts again either making the last series or new series irrelevant. I refuse to follow 2 Resident Evil series'…

An open world gameplay will kill all sense of fear, panic and dread the story may provide.

RE brand is already dead, unfortunately

Crapcom just doesn't get it. If it wants to do stupid RE spinoffs fine, but a main numbered entry in the franchise should never be open world. They've already f'ed up enough, don't do so even more.
