It's the one date so many PlayStation 3 owners wanted to see tonight: The launch date for Naughty Dog's The Last Of Us .

And we got it at the Spike TV Video Game Awards tonight, as we now know the hotly anticipated PS3 exclusive will hit store shelves on May 7, 2013 in North America.

Initially unveiled in December of last year, the game has received plenty of press and promotion in 2012; Sony and Naughty Dog have done a good job keeping us abreast of the studio's progress. We've seen several enticing trailers and that gameplay segment shown off at E3 really got people talking. There's a darn good chance that The Last Of Us will be in line for some awards next year, just because it's Naughty Dog and…well, we've seen a lot of it already. Is there anybody who isn't at least a little impressed?

So put that date on your calendar, folks. You won't want to miss it.

It looks like it will be a nice spread of games early next year!

2013 will be an awesome year to be a ps3 user!

Probable games include

Warriors lair
Dragon's Crown
Until Dawn ( A psMove game)
Dust 514

The last guardian
God of War ascension
The Last of Us
Beyond: Two Souls

–Maybe even (here in the USA)–
yakuza 5
Kingdom Hearts 1.5 HD ReMIX

Not to mention ton and tons of great games not exlusive to the ps3.

"The Last Guardian" is unlikely to be released though it seems… which would be unfortunate.

If it did start development after UC2… that's a pretty long cycle. I expect nothing less than excellence. Oh wait, I'm not gonna get to play it for goodness knows how long. Rats.

Can't wait. I'm glad it's not a holiday release, because I was really hoping to be playing the game around this holiday whether itwas late 2012 or early 2013. So this is good news.

Finally, a release date! My self-imposed media blackout on this game will soon be over. Last trailer I saw was the one for E3 earlier this year. Couldn't wait to play the game!

I'm probably in the minority here.
Despite all the gameplay footage which I think is awesome, and despite the fact that I'm interested in it, it's still not a must-buy for me.

I'll be waiting for reviews and hopefully a demo to clear my sense of doubt or something, if this ain't by Naughty Dog I probably wouldn't even care.

I'm not sold on it either, I know it will be a great game but I am sick to death of post-apocalyptic settings. I had my fill will Fallout 3, then we were just bombarded with them. I know Naughty Dog excel, but the project itself does not excite me.

I'm definitely interested, but I need to get to know more about the actual gameplay before anyone can call me *excited*.

If this were a movie I'd be excited though, for sure, cause I love the setting. But I am worried this will be too linear and scripted for my liking, Uncharted style.

still on the fence with this.
its been revealed for a year now and we still dont have a good look at the games infected, or the plot of the story, all we really have to go off is the E3 demo they have showed 1000000000000 times now!
im really starting to wonder why ND and $ony are being so god dam secretive and protective of this!
i mean at the EB expo they spent 10 of the 15 minutes they had talking about how the guy playing the demo was the ONLY person in the country permitted to do so!
really, is that how you want to promote your game?
why are they being so secretive and protective of it!?

Maybe because they realise that they basically ruined Uncharted 3 for a lot of gamers from showing off WAAAAAAAY too much and really want to rectify that mistake here?

does not mean they have to go the complete opposite, there is a happy medium you know?

Personally, I think they shouldn't have shown us the infected at all! Imagine playing this game on May 7th sneaking past, or killing, your human foes and then all of a sudden BAM! there they are, mutated freaks coming at you. It would have had so much more impact than knowing it's coming at some point.

Fans of Uncharted know this game will deliver, no matter how much or how little they show. This game looks like less is more before release.

Personally, I don't understand how anyone could still be on the fence about this title, even with not seeing the infected, etc..

This is Naughty Dog. They haven't failed yet this gen and I don't see that trend stopping with The Last Of Us.

But, that's just me. ūüôā

Of course I agree with you, but there is always someone who goes against the grain just to be different, to be noticed________look at me!! It's like someone saying they hate Star Wars! We all know that's an impossible thought right there!

A person could hate Star Wars and love Star Wars at the same time though. I like the original trilogy (really who doesn't?) but don't really care for Episodes 1 & 2, 3 is somewhat tolerable.
