Would Ninja Theory Be The Right Studio To Make Another Onimusha?

Okay, for the record, Ninja Theory is not developing a new Onimusha .

The studio clarified recent rumors that they were cranking away on a next-generation iteration of the popular action franchise that hasn't returned for some time. Despite multiple installments last generation, Capcom's series has apparently disappeared for good.

But maybe not. Last year, Street Fighter 4 producer Yoshinori Ono said "the time feels right" to bring Onimusha back. He also added that he'd want to expand beyond the single-player experience, though, which is bound to bring a frown to the face of many fans. You know, those fans who don't necessarily believe that a game is broken if it doesn't sport multiplayer. Anyway, the question is this- Would Ninja Theory be the right studio to handle an Onimusha reincarnation? And if not, which developer would you choose?

Remember, Ninja Theory has already produced a couple quality action titles this generation ( Heavenly Sword and Enslaved: Odyssey to the West ), and they will deliver the Devil May Cry reboot in mid-January. If the latter comes out nicely, maybe those guys really would be the perfect team to handle an Onimusha return…

A no for ninja theory and yes for Platinum Games.

For me, nope. I didn't enjoyed Enslaved. The combat sucks. The acting is bad. I didn't felt the connection between Monkey and Trip. Unlike Nathan and Elena. Underwhelming boss battle. Upon reaching Trip village, I figured out how the scenes will play. Cliche is not bad as long as it is handled very well.

As for DMC, I've got a bad feeling about that game. Something doesn't feel right.

How dare you say bad things about Andy Serkis?

Well in this game, it's bad. Or maybe it's the director's fault. But the scenes are just really not that good. Can you tell me a scene that you really are amazed and proud of this game that will make you shed a tear or somehow will be humorous and sweet even if it is cliche you will still laugh and like it?

I felt the connection, it was especially subtle. In any case I don't think there is any critical reception that would agree with you.

But yeah that part at her village was annoyingly lengthy when even a nitwit knew the next plot point.

Did Enslaved won awards? Did it sell millions? You see, when I much preferred the cliche story, the chemistry and the drama between the characters of Uncharted over Enslaved, it tells me that Ninja Theory failed, because Enslaved is supposed to be the more emotionally focus game between the two.

It really isn't fair to compare Uncharted to Enslaved. That's first.

Second, I don't think anybody thought the acting in Enslaved was bad. That isn't even close to accurate. The writing could've been better, but the end result was relatively impressive.

I didn't like the last boss fight, either. But as for the combat itself, it was fine. It wasn't supposed to be God of War; the focus was on the environment, on the cooperation, and on the story. Enslaved wasn't fantastic but it was very solid and well worth playing for most.

I know that Andy Serkis did a great acting job in Lord Of The Rings, but if you put him in a poorly written script, he's acting skills will not shine. It's like Cuba Gooding Jr. in Snow Dogs.

As for comparing Uncharted, I didn't even bring up the technical and the great set pieces of Uncharted comparison to Enslaved, just the plain story of the characters. Enslaved has a big name behind it, Alex Garland I think, and an old Chinese novel as a base of the story. But still if it's poorly written or if the dialogue is just plain ok, well it's just a mediocre story in the end. There is just no memorable scenes that you can bragged about in that game. It didn't make me laugh or concerned about the characters like some scenes in Uncharted, The De Ja Vu scene, etc… Remember, Enslaved is supposed to be the more story focus game. If the dialogue or scenes is poorly written even if it has a great concept is just not really that great in the end.

The combat is mediocre, the concept is great but the dialogue or the scenes is really not that great or even award winning, it has no impact. The environment is good but not that great. In the end it's just a mediocre game. Uncharted is a hollywood cliche blockbuster type, but I still preferred the characters of it instead of the characters of supposed to be well written story by an established name and acted by Andy Serkis.

I feel that something as Japanese as Onimusha should stay with a Japanese developer. I'm not just talking about a Japanese style of developing games either, I'm talking about a game based entirely on the folklore of the country. I feel that there are some nuances in the game that Ninja Theory would miss, and while it might be a decent game, something just wouldn't feel right.

Hopefully not. Sorry to say but they are not competent enough to tackle that series. It is a Japanese story through and through.

Good point man, it's like asking a Japanese studio to make another Red Dead.

So was DMC, we don't know yet if they have delivered on that one though.

Yes, the Devil May Cry franchise is very Japanese in its style, but the story is far separated from anything actually traditionally Japanese. Onimusha is heavily influenced by Japanese history and culture, and so the situation is a little different. While I hope the new DMC turns out to be good, I do not think it's a good idea for Ninja Theory to pick up the next Onimusha. I said it earlier, but I just think something would feel off about the whole thing.

I seriously doubt NT would just toss out Japanese culture from the games. It has to be there and be accurate, end of story.

Of course they wouldn't toss it right out the window, but would they do a good job of it? I'm not so sure about that. I would rather it be left in the hands of Japanese developers who have been surrounded by it their whole lives to accurately represent the cultural and emotional aspects of the story, in a very Japanese way. I just don't think Ninja Theory fits that envelope. I still think it would be a decent game, but whether or not it would be a decent Onimusha game is a different story.

Funny you mentioned this ben. I was just surfing the amazon and i found the full onimusha collection for like 30$. I loved each and every one three and 4 of the series so another one would have been amazing. I actually read a bunch of "rumors" about onimusha 5: oni of darkness. Turned out to be fake clearly, as i read it like 4 years ago. Onimusha was my demons souls of the ps2 days. Dark, difficult, fun, immersive, and the co-op of dawn of dreams was well implemented. Would seriously love another onimusha. Well, as long as they didnt turn it into a FPS or TPS action game.

I hardly remember Onimusha but I think I liked one of them. If Ninja Theory succeeds with DmC then they could get a reputation as a turnaround artist for Japanese reboots. Then maybe it could happen.

I never thought about it, But I would much prefer them to take Onimusha than DMC. At least Onimusha had really reached the end of where it could go, DMC4 left such a great set up at the end of the game, I was really anticipating DMC5.

would greenpeace be the perfect group to test the new fighter jet?
come on, NT would be THE worst studio to bring us anything like this!
id like to think crapcom have enough self pride and respect to keep at least this franchise in house.
if it ever returns that is.

I really enjoyed the PS2 Onimusha series so I'm surprised there have been no HD remakes thus far (or have I missed it?) Anyway, with the right developer, this series could be successfully resurrected. I can see how they could implement multiplayer with a combo of swordfighting and projectile attacks (arrows and spears). Could be fresh and interesting.

Not if they are going to use Unreal Engine 3. If they get the Capcom engine that they use for RE6 then I would say maybe.

I like ninja theory but I don't think they are up there with my most respected devs. There always seems to be something missing from there games and I can't put my finger on it.

I really dont care I just want the game. Whoever is suitable just needs to do a good job. Side-bar…Americans can develop Japanese games just as Japanese devs can develop American games. It just comes down to doing extensive homework to give the gamers what they want.

Darn! This article brings back memories of the old…When games were all about gameplay and story rather than insane ultra realistic graphics…

Onimusha is one of my favorite games during the PS2 era but no.1 is still Radiata Stories (I really hope Sony/Square Enix would put this game on PSN)!

No..no NT for Onimusha. I could see Platinum Games working on it. Before anything I want a HD collection! That is one HD collection that has been a must in my mind.

GuyverLT

If Platinum could do a good enough story for them but you guys have to remember Onimusha was more story-driven they had very good stories and Platinum isn't known for that the only reason MGR:R might have decent to good story is because it's still being handle by Kojima pro. This can easily be remedied if get some good witers but if they're doing the story on they're own then I don't know if that will work I mean we'd get that signature over-the-top gameplay that platinum is known for sure but Onimusha had something games like Devil May Cry didn't have it had balance it wasn't just good story and sub-par gameplay or good gameplay and sub-par story Onimusha had both. Personally I think Capcom should give the Ip to Keji Inafune and let him handle it

I really want a HD remake collection though.
