HA.

A whole lot of long-time (and painfully bitter) fans have been saying it for years, and now a former company boss just echoed those sentiments.

Square Enix posted up losses (again) and former Square Co. head honcho Hisashi Suzuki took to Twitter (as noted by Kotaku ) to lash out at his previous employer. Suzuki said that the total value of publicly traded stock isn't any higher now than it was when Squaresoft joined Enix. In his words- "The merger was a complete failure. There's no vision for the future." If you're wondering, Suzuki was the president of Square between 2000 and 2002 before the company merged with Enix. Since that time, things haven't exactly been the same.

This sort of falls into the "so what else is new?" category for those who have watched Square's fall from grace. We all remember a time when anything Squaresoft touched turned to instant classic gold…and it's hard to forget.

Only if the merge didn't happen. I could just imagine the games today. *tears*

When Squaresoft acquired Enix, they should have remained separate entities. They could've used Enix to work on their western games while Squaresoft continued with the established franchises.

I think they viewed the acquisition as some kind of instant goldmine, forgetting that hard work and their fans are where the money was at.

He makes a good point. I remember back when they originally merged how a lot of people in the gaming community thought it would result in this all star RPG super company that would take over the gaming world. It has done the exact opposite. It's only eroded the quality base of both companies.

DQIX was still a great game. Because it's not on a console doesn't take away from that.

It's been such a shame to see this company rather spectacularly fall from their former glory. Great to hear someone from the inside actually thinking exactly the same. No vision.

its easy to hurl shit at a ex employee, but if he was still in charge would things be any better?
how about backing up your volatile filth with statements on where they went wrong, and why?
and what you would do to "fix" it.
one thing i hate about society today, they just fling sh*t at one another just for the sake of it.
what happened to the good old days where you showed respect to people?
i swear to god the whole world is turning into 16 year old spoiled sluts!

Did you mean ex employer?

Do you really like SquareEnix? I'm surprised you're defending them. There's nothing wrong with that, if you like their games.

no not at all.
im not defending them, im just saying what happened to the good old days where people did not act like spoiled brats!
especially on the internet!
i remember the good old days where if you were to do this you would be sacked so fast your head would create its own gravitational field!

What I think "The Blank" is trying to say is that the former head of Square was quick to sling his mud but didn't offer any reason as to why the merger failed or what he would do to fix it.

And even though I'm not defending "The Blank", I'm sure all you jack wagons that replied to his comment (except for you tes37…:-)) will think I am. And in that case, the yellow spam triangle is just below the post date and the thumbs down is just below my drivel. Good day.

Could easily be the case of "when your inner child is gone…" philosophy.

Surely the complete misunderstanding of the fans, as unpredictable as they may be nowadays, notes that the ratio of Fun-vs-Money has kinda weighed to the wrong side a bit.

Damn, 12 was FUN!

Hey, hey square quick question. How would your stock be right now if you released good games. For example, i know tons of people who have been waiting for kingdom hearts 3 since they were teenagers. TEENAGERS. A friend of mine now has kids. KIDS. But of course instead o giving us what we want we get FF13 spin offs. FF13 was like that movie you saw the trailer for and was like 'omg this is going to be awesome.' Then when you see it, it sucked and you regretted buying the 16$ popcorn.

If they would take their heads out of their arses and released fan favorites, they would see their $$$ rise a bit faster than releasing stuff people buy used, just to spite them. Instead they milk the greatest series's dry with a bunch of BS side stories. It makes me sad when i play something like FF9 and FF6 on my vita, and remember the hell i had while playing FF13/13-2. They need to redeem themselves fast because im sure people are at their wits end and when they finally release the favorites, people are gunna say 'Meh, 10 years to late.'

@Knightzane, the movie you're referring to (at least for me) is Clash of the Titans from a few years ago…

Only positives to come out from them since the merge were FFXII and KHII.
You really gotta wonder, what are they doing and why.
Any sane person would change their way if one way doesn't work, so far this gen FFXIII and FFXIII-2 are the only games that's bringing in the cash.
Not only do they not care about the mistakes and failures, they don't even bother to try harder.

Someone needs to bring Sakaguchi back and have him lead the team in the right direction ONCE MORE.
Even the great Kitase isn't doing what he did back in the old days.

He's saying it was a fiscal failure, but more important to us it was a quality failure.

It's nice to hear it from someone who was in charge though, as SE clearly won't listen to fans.

If plan A worked and plan B didn't then shouldn't you go back to plan A? I don't get how they don't see it. They think they need to go even more extreme in their pandering. At least with them losing money left and right maybe they will be forced to cash in on the FFVII remake.

The only thing keeping SE alive these days is their developers outside of Japan. Outside of that they have utterly failed this generation..

That said, things started to go to **** for Square before the merger took place. However Wada needs to go and they need a big shake up internally.

yea, and also back then Sakaguchi was the executive vice president of the Squaresoft and the main story writer for many classic Square JRPGs, he is the soul of the JRPGs, and he still has it. being the last best example The Last Story….since his departure and the merge, SE has never been the same.

I think the last great game they made was FFX and with that the imminent death of square was evident. Sadly this just helps give rise to other companies willing and able to listen to CERTAIN fans. Though a lot of them are whiny children at best there are those of us who remain true and can recommend what would sell seeing as how we are ultimately the consumers as well. Despite this the current Square thinks it better to ignore their demographic just like another company who has succumbed to greed in the likes of games about fighting in the streets or devils that will possibly cry… (capcom)

Check out this WIKIPEDIA entry I found about the merger-

The original Square Enix was formed as the result of a merger between Square and Enix The merger occured. 80% of Square Enix staff were made up of former Square Co. employees. president Yoichi Wada was appointed president oration, while former Enix president Keiji Honda became its vice president.
Square Enix's new motto around the office quickly became:
"Under no circumstances ever will we give our customers what they want especially when it comes to a FFVII reboot.
(oh and we'll only make a few Kingdom Hearts games too over a ten year period muhahaha)"
