I gotta tell ya, David…you might be my favorite person in the industry today but this is kinda pushing it.
Quantic Dream boss David Cage is a visionary who has already delivered Heavy Rain and is currently at work on the seemingly astounding Beyond: Two Souls . And in a recent ShortList interview , he talks about a new level of progression: Controlling what we see on a video screen with our brains.
Cage said he was "very interested in the recent breakthrough of 3D helmets" and he believes "brain control is something achievable for the future." It might give us a searing headache or seizures or something (that's what I'd be worried about) but hey, he may be onto something. Said Cage:
"I mean, we already see interesting experiments in labs, such as when scientists send images to the brain of a blind person, enabling them to 'see.' When this happens on a wider scale there will be no need for controllers any more. Just think about what you want to do on screen and your character will do it."
Cage also reiterated his desire to see less violence and more innovation and meaning, which we've heard before. That, I'm all for. But this brain control idea is just a little too "Lawnmower Man" for me. Definitely frightening. Still, there is one quote of his with which I wholeheartedly agree, as it in some ways echoes my latest editorial :
"Modern day interactivity offers a unique approach for the player by making him an actor rather than a passive watcher, and I'm convinced, with time, we can grow up and give much more than we currently do."
I can't see anyone disagreeing with that.
I gotta agree with Ben. This brain interaction route, at least on an entertainment level, is a bit scary. I think it's great about the medical strides being made, but when I read things about how MS may have plans to monitor living room activity via KINECT to enforce EULA measures it makes life seem a little uncomfortable. Taken to extremes this could be insane. Just imagine, Federal messages forcing there way into our minds whenever Barrack needs to tell us something of his visions for our happiness and well being =p
So as cool as it would seem to do Star Trek NG stuff with addictive brain games I don't know if these are pastures worth exploring.
I will say, Cages sort of stuff seems like a good fit for mind interfaces.
Sorry my computer is doing 100 things at once so I can't open a Google, what's EULA?
european union lawnmower man alliance
World, I assume you've already gotten the answer but just in case: End User Licensing Agreement.
He totally has his hands all over the PS4…
…i wish lol
It may be scary but it's already happening, I've seen it in action in a documentary where a select few quadriplegics had chips implanted on their brains with a jack that plugs them into a PC. From there they can control the cursor with thought alone.
Well, in view of this, everyone needs to watch Sword Art Online which envisions an MMORPG played through a controller that interfaces with the brain to produce a fully 3D experience where the player's avatar is controlled directly by thought.
No, seriously, watch Sword Art Online – you will enjoy.
P.S. it was reported earlier this year (IIRC) that Sony obtained a patent for a controller that was controlled by the brain of the player in some fashion… combined with their 3D visors and such, you never know what could be possible.
OMG! I love Sword Art Online I'm loving it so far. 😀 I was going to recommend it to you but i see you already are watching it.

Hooked beyond hope my friend. The first story arc is awesome, and I was completely captivated by it. Many tears have either welled up or been shed, I can't quite put my finger on what it is about Sword Art Online(SAO), but it's really touched a nerve for me. I can't really say anything without spoilers. I love the show, story and characters. Asuna, Kirito and Yui in particular…they're just special somehow. The original author obviously knows how to build a character that can grab your heart.
I'm on the same page man and I agree, I came so close to crying as well, the music and how they portray the characters is very well done.
I'm on episode 17 on Crunchyroll, I don't have a subscription so I have to wait, I seen episode 18 on YouTube but I don't know if they messed up the subtitles or not so I'm waiting for that to release.

i prefer the ' computer end holodeck simulation ' route over the 'jack me into the matrix' or the less known sex helmet from demolition man!
Humans just don't like change. Oh well, whatever you believe, this is where society is going. Read some Dr. Michio Kaku. Hell, by the end of this century he predicts that we will be moving physical objects with our minds. Nanotechnology for the win.
Michio Kaku is awesome, I love hearing what he has to say.
I think it's possible. You can control your own body and use your body to control an avatar, so why not skip the middle man? It would allow so much more freedom in game design. Developers wouldn't be hampered by the limitations of controllers.
But like others, it's the other potential uses that frighten me, such as thoughts being put into your brain…
This could become scary in so ways because you know Govenments will take it over for their own personal agenda's against their own peoples.
Hell, our very own Government have been using their own form of non-helmeted mind control aimed solely at the me, me, me, entitlement-adled crowds, for the last 4 years.
This sounds scary.
I'd have to pass on this if it becomes a reality. It might be a little tough to play a game for a couple of hours without thinking about something other than controlling the action.
I like tech where it is. I don't want something like this to happen, and if it does i hope its after im long gone and if its before my arse is moving to an unhabited island. I don't even think graphics need to get better, give me superb gameplay with incredible stories anyday. That of course is 100% opinion but i really don't think im the only one. Play video games with my mind? No i like my controller and i prefer video games and reality to stay split. Of course when i was younger .hack// was really cool for me but now that im older i really don't think the two worlds, virtual and reality, should ever collide. Ever. Once again this is 100% opinion no reason to hate me.
xDDD I know you meant to be sincere and I see that but, man…
That last entry "just an opinion, no reason to hate me". YES! Ohh. Seriously funny.
Anyway. I agree. Peace & Good Gaming.
i think this guy needs to take a step away from the magic mushrooms!
You don't think it's possible? They had a documentary about this on the History channel and they were indeed doing it with thought. It's not impossible.
Cyber Punk!!
Ghost in the shell, Shadowrun, Johnny Mnemonic . . .
Scary in a way but interesting at the same time 😛
