The Devil May Cry reboot, known simply as DMC , was never supposed to be "Devil May Cry 5."

In fact, Capcom never wanted a sequel. Ninja Theory co-founder Tameem Antoniades told NowGamer that the publisher desired a "new entry point into the series with a different perspective," which is why Capcom initially approached the Heavenly Sword developer.

"What was very clear was they didn’t want to make Devil May Cry 5. They didn’t want to make something that looked like the previous four."

Capcom has been very hands-on in the supervision of the upcoming reboot, especially when it comes to the combat. Antoniades said Capcom visits Ninja Theory "every six to eight weeks" and they even bring the director of the last three Devil May Cry installments. Added Antoniades:

"That was kind of the division of responsibility, if you like. We were charged with reinventing the world and the character, and they were in charge of ensuring we understood the philosophy of Devil May Cry combat and effectively make a Japanese combat game within a Western story."

DMC is slated to arrive on January 15 and from what we've seen of the gameplay, it certainly appears to fit the style of the franchise. We have plenty of faith in Ninja Theory, too…even if we remain a little leery of the new Dante. It's all about the gameplay, though!

The game looks great and that sounds like the way to mix Japanese and western influences so I'm very hopeful and I like punk Dante.

After this though Sony should conscript NT to do a Heavenly Sword 2 for PS4 launch.

they can make a reboot without changing everything drastically.. h ow many spiderman or superman reboots have there been? and dont all of them consist of peter parker being at a science exhibit and getting bit by a radioactive spider to get his powers? Or Superman being launched from Krypton his planet before it blows up.. his escape pod landing on Earth and then go from there?

So why is this Dante half angel half devil as opposed to half human half dean.. and whys his brother Vergil being portrayed as a good guy (though Im 100% sure thats just a ruse or something happens during the game that makes him an enemy so Im a little more hopeful on that one)

In the Tobey MacGuire movies he was bit by a genetically engineered spider since that is the current boogie man instead of radioactivity.

Clearly this reboot is set early on in the story of Dante so Virgil isn't necessarily going to have the same alignment, his motives may yet be unclear.

I see it more as stepping back in time and tweaking things than this massive change to everything.

Complete reboot and a parallel universe. Has nothing in coming with the old Devil May Cry series besides the names of people. Dante has been changed to be cocky again and everyone is happy.

I see it as stepping back in time too bu that wouldnt explain how.. in the future Dante goes from half devil half angel to half demon half human nor does it explain how his hair goes from black to silver and his face looks completely different lol

They're playing around with the origin story is all, I mean c'mon it's a new team using a creative medium, they weren't hired to redo things the same way.

His hair goes white and his coat goes red when you hit your limit break in this game, so maybe too much exposure to that changes him and sure he's going to have a more youthful face.

Based on that I can say I still LOVED the new StarTrek movie even if was all an altered reality! No?

So I figure I'll love this reboot since it looks pretty good so far.

Great reboots can make awesome stories and I think StarTrek was a good exemple. Unless you hated it lol

When you get lost, start from the beginning.

As long as the combat is convincing enough, I may buy my first DMC title ever. I think Ninja Theory is very talented and I'm sure they'll make this into something that will appeal to me.

I really want to see a Heavenly Sword 2. There are a lot of gifted developers out there, but I want Ninja Theory more than any other team, to make the game.

They probably never will. So I'm hoping Sony Santa Monica picks it up. Their combat systems are always the best, and if Nariko was for some reason brought back they could do a darker feel to it perfectly.

Anyways I'm with you though. I wish they'd just realize the game was a huge hit and tons of people are awaiting, actually WANTING a sequel!

I wish they'd just said it was a reboot (or reinvention) from the beginning, rather than characterizing it as a prequel for so long. I like Ninja Theory as a developer and I'm looking forward to their take on this game, but sometimes they are their own worst enemy in terms of public relations.

Yes they truly are. I can never truly understand why they say the things they do, or do the things they do. Their mind set as a company sometimes seems backwards.

I don't recall them ever saying it was a prequel, I only remember the media making that assumption.

different perspective ay?
well then why not create a new IP.
because it would not sell as well, is that right crapcom?
REALLY starting to get sick of this brand whoring this industry has latched itself onto!
ive said it once, twice, a billion times and ill say it again.
ONCE, just ONCE, can we PLEASE have a sequel thats a sequel AND NOT a new IP!?

actually, we finally have, exactly why halo 4 is so f*cking awesome!
everything you want in a sequel, feels exactly the same as the predecessors yet fresh, and new.
same dial, just turned up 10 points!
exactly what a sequel should be!

Looks like they failed to me… it's just a heap of crap. They can say all they want, but Dante is dead and this is just a cheap imitation.
