Ubisoft On Next AC: We’ll Go Where Fans Don’t Want Us To Go

Nobody expected Ubisoft to put the new Assassin's Creed in the complex, sprawling setting of the American Revolution.

And that's precisely what they intend to do with the next installment: Give us something we're not expecting and in fact, something we say we don't even want . Yes, really.

It's an interesting idea. In a recent International Business Times interview with Ubisoft creative director Alex Hutchinson, we learn that the team will want to adopt an unpopular choice for the next assassin quest.

"I think our goal would be to do surveys, and to whichever place everybody said ‘absolutely not there’, that’s where we would go."

Hutchinson admitted to taking some "big risks" with Assassin's Creed III , in that they created a minority lead character, a setting people never anticipated, and fresh gameplay like naval battles. So what might they concoct for the fourth Assassin's Creed ? Well, what's to say we even get ACIV any time soon? If history repeats itself, Ubisoft will produce some new spin-offs based on ACIII, ala Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood and Assassin's Creed: Revelations . But maybe that won't happen…

Haven't got my hands on AC3 yet (Stupid delivery) but I really hope they don't put out AC4 next year even though I love the series.

I know where the fans won't want them to go… they won't want an FPS assassin… they also won't want a splintercell type game for this series. That will be the overwhelming NONO from fans…

They must know this…

Are they going full (Pineapple Express Explitive) here?

Oh my God. They are going to set it in the Final Fantasy XIII universe?

I am guessing that they are referring to setting/conflict, for instance:
1. Vietnam (Jungle tree jumping pops out right away)
2. World War I or II
3. China (Building the Great Wall era)
4. Japan (Maybe The Last Samurai era with guns, cannons, horses and swords)
5. Russia (Has an incredible wilderness)
As far as game play, they won't alienate their fans by completely changing the combat system.

What ever they choose I am sure it will be epic! Spin offs will no doubt come out on the PS3. However, ACIV will be a next gen title so it will really be amazing to see how the ACIII engine scales to the next gen!

That would be amazing if they held it in an Eastern country, and a big ass risk using all Asian people inside their own culture in a western developed game.

I would love a Russian setting (I've said this before). Not just a good wilderness, their cities have incredible architecture. So far, I definitely miss the mind-blowing architecture of the past games. I thought that was a big strong point of theirs.

I'm still waiting for them to set it entirely in the modern era. It doesn't have to be Desmond, but I really want to play through it Splinter Cell style.

Maybe a WWII hunt for Hitler? I would really love that. One of my fave games, that I still play for an hour or so on a monthly basis, is Rise of the Triad. It's an old DOS based game where you hunt Nazi's in a castle. I think an AC with a storyline like all of the assassination attempts on Hitler would be a really cool take. Of course, there's always hunting Kardashians. lol

Triad was so much fun, as far as I know the very first FPS with dual-wield. Someone ported it to Dreamcast too so I keep a copy around for fun.

I would love to see them go back to ancient egypt, or maybe ancient greece? I realize the technology of the day would limit the weapons somewhat but they could get creative.

I'd like to see AC do some sort of Nordic, Greek, and feudal Japan mythology settings in the future.

Mexico….. the next game will be during the Mexican revolution.

Well when it broke away from Spain, not the Pancho Villa revolution.

For the record, I think I've got this nailed down. I was at a total loss as to how to approach the RE6 review and I hope people weren't too unhappy with it, but I've got ACIII. I really think people should read the upcoming review because bugs or no bugs, disappointment or no disappointment, it should shed light on the entire issue.

I like to see them.. I mean I wouldn't like to see them do one on the Roman Empire 50-100 years before Christ. They were a brutal bunch and I'd have no problem with assassinating their top officials.

Ooh, I think that would be the biggest NO NO I could think of…

Using the Bible to get inspiration would DEFINITELY touch quite a few nerves around; like what happened with Asura's Wrath…

The other sensitive theme would be WWII, Hitler and the jews and it could produce an uproar…

Yeah, either one would make an awesome setting for the franchise, in my opinion.

I say Vikings!!!!! Seriously though they could go to a lot of places that is whats so cool about this franchise. History has many stories and they could literally keep making games in different time periods for a century and not run out of stuff to talk about.

id love to see them go back to the original AC local, the middle east, its by far the most architectural beauty place out there.
both aesthetics and cultural wise, and id be nice to get back to your roots.
some days i dream what the series would be like now if they stuck with the original gameplay instead of making it so much quicker and easier!
part of me wishes they would go back and do a true sequel to the original, im really interested to see what it would be like.

Well I'm sure they know what they're doing. Unlike someone I know who loves ruining everything. That cursed Square of Enixes.
