Whenever you change things up a little and introduce something new, your fans might just rebel.
And maybe that's part of the reason developer Insomniac Games says they're always "terrified" about unveiling a new IP. In speaking to NowGamer , creative director Brian Allgeier said the recently revealed Fuse prompted much trepidation among the team.
"I think we’re pretty much terrified whenever we reveal a new game concept. Whether it be stylised and cartoony or more grounded and fantastic, it’s happened with every game we’ve worked on. You never know how people are going to react."
I think people were a little surprised when they first saw Resistance: Fall of Man . We were all like, "Wait, that's from the Ratchet & Clank guys?!" Allgeier says the studio "agonized over changing Overstrike into Fuse ," and they were concerned that the gaming public wouldn't think too highly about the shift in style and concept. Many seemed to like it, though.
Added Allgeier:
"Any time you make a big change like that, it’s going to create waves. Ultimately you have to do what’s right for the game. You have to make a lot of tough decisions. You have to assess everything, you know? We get feedback from ourselves, company-wide usability tests where we get feedback from people and ultimately we have to make a decision, and it’s tough."
We can certainly appreciate that. The only thing left is for Insomniac to do what they do best: Deliver a great game. And with Fuse , they're gonna have to make it stand out a little… For more info and gameplay details, check out our recent preview .

They should be agonizing over unveiling a cookie cutter TPS nobody is gonna care about.
That's why I like World. He says all the harsh things so I don't have too. 🙂
I wouldn't call it cookie-cutter. How many TPSs have black hole guns?
Woo Hoo for the Brute Force of this gen! =p
lol I thought the same thing when this was revealed.
To bad they tried to please the cod crowd with their focus groups.
COD has amazingly cool guns like black hole weapons?
man, ive been playing the wrong game!
They must not have asked the right people. Because Overstrike was a purchase for me, but fuse is not.
TF2 looks cartoony and a ton of people play that. I dont know what they were scared of, but I guess they are hoping that the CoD fans will pick it up or something?
I dont understand why devs are trying to hit that market with every bloody game.
I think they will be more agonized when they realize that EA is going to destroy them, slowly from the inside out. This to me smells like EAs decision to change the style, maybe not though, maybe the cartoony zany developers who blessed us with the comical ratchet and clank and the colourful resistence series decided they wanted to be less stand out and more generic 😉
We just have to be patient, after Fuse flops they might get a clue.
I dunno, if its anything like Bioware they won't really "flop" they will just have fan rage while all the new comers praise the game for doing unthinkable and amazing things…
But I hope in a way it flops, I hope EA flip flops enough to learn to stop screwing with established IPs….sorry my nose bleeds when I talk about things that will never happen in any universe ever.
Well this isn't established and has no fanbase, it appears to be centered around a gimmick (this fuse stuff) and has generic characters that don't even approach the poorly developed (yet highly revered) Gears cast.
I know Resistance 3 didn't sell but at least it was a series with substance, same with R&C.
Exactly this game seems to be the exact opposite of what I've come to expect from insomniac.
Well I guess I'm in a minority of one on Fuse, cause I've been watching the latest video's on it & I'm liking what I'm seeing with all these "FUSEable-linked guns & tricks.
Although I'm not too thrilled that it's gone cell-shaded & is only a D/L title.

Haven't seen much of Fuse, but it doesn't look all that bad to me. I mean, it doesn't quite have the charm of that original Overstrike trailer… but still seems worth a look.
Really Insomniac? Do they not realize how generic and boring those redesigned characters look now?
i dont mind the changes they have made to the game, it really looks like they still want to make something a bit darker more serious they have spent 2 generations making colourful cartoony kids games thats enough!
not to say i dont miss the old look of overstrike, and the different gameplay, but i prefer this.
looks really awesome too with all the customizable weapons, linkable trees, and 4 playable characters all very different and switchable on the fly!
sweet!
