Capcom Tries To Explain DLC Apparently Locked On RE6 Disc

This probably isn't what Capcom needed right now.

It started with a modder claiming to have unlocked various downloadable content files hidden on the Resident Evil 6 disc. That YouTube video has certainly made the rounds, especially after Capcom came under fire earlier this year for locking new fighters onto the Street Fighter X Tekken disc. Remember that? The publisher responded to that backlash by saying there's really no difference between content locked on the disc and DLC .

And as the modder seems to have uncovered a new difficulty option (No Hope), new multiplayer maps, and Ada co-op play, fans are once again calling out Capcom. Well, here's the response the company gave CVG :

"We still have unannounced DLC for RE6 that will be revealed in the coming months and while virtually all such content will not be on the disc there will be one piece of content, that for technical reasons, requires the use of a combination of newly downloaded data and data that is included on the retail game disc."

All this after Capcom said they'd "reevaluate" how they think about DLC . Well, I'm not getting in the middle of this minefield.

These type of DLC have always annoyed me. If it's already in the disc, why make us pay more to use it? Planned DLC (before release) is already bad, but it's just worse to actually have in the disc already.

I guess its no long DLC as in Downloaded Contents but DLC as in Disc Loaded Contents. Yeah I know that was bad. I really miss the good old days when you have to work hard at a game to unlock secrets… Content on the disc that we already paid for should be unlocked not charged.

Reposting from Facebook:

Didn't Capcom learn anything from their SFxTK debacle? People hate locked-on-disc content that you have to pay for later. It is not a matter of how they deliver add-on content like they always say. DLC stands for downloadable content. Either they don't know what DLC stands for or they actually have no clue as to what downloadable really means. If it's already on the disc, why do people have to pay extra cash for it?

It a despicable business practice, at least from my perspective. Which probably explains why I have next to zero Capcom game this generation. I will be buying Okami later this month and they better not screw it up but implementing DLCs on it!

Bad optics for a company that likes to screw with people when it comes to favorite franchises.

I think they just don't understand the mindset of gamers any more; there's a certain special indecency to selling a product that has certain parts of it locked out that you have to pay to unlock.

It's a shame that so many people that complain about the quality of videogames continue to buy any game that's a supposed AAA title regardless of the actual quality. I did it too with XIII-2 but no more!

^^^THIS.

As long as you continue feeding the Beast, the Beast will live and grow.

I will not buy FF13-2 or Lightning Returns. I will not buy (i.e. rent, games as a service BS) the SimCity reboot with always-on DRM. I will not buy any Ubisoft PC game with forced U-Play crapware integration. I will not reward bad behavior.

If people keep buying these things, the publishers will continue to make them worse and worse. You can only stop them by closing your wallet.

Capcom is either releasing updated ultimate editions shortly after the first game or they are doing the on disk dlc. I'm pretty tired of it. They were once a great company but all these excuses and screwing over the customers who made you big are a huge slap in the face. I understand times have changed and dlc isn't going anywhere BUT there is a big difference between charging someone for what is already completed and on disk versus something still being worked on that isn't part of the game and releases much later such as the case with Borderlands 2 stuff. I'm done with Capcom.

What kind of an explanation is that? Not sure if that's an excuse or a lame attempt to fool consumers into thinking that DLCs work differently for them specifically.

BUT.. to be fair. It's only a difficulty level that's on the disc. Yes, it's silly that a difficulty level is locked, but the other major ones like Map Packs and Ada Wong Co-op is only partial. Partial either means that they couldn't get it done by launch date, or they purposely cut parts of it so the DLC people download doesn't seem to be "suspiciously" small… like kb worth of data..

In the end we can only assume, but there's already a bunch of content already to be honest. Don't get me wrong, I'm not backing or supporting them or anything (I'm a true DLC hater), but it's a possibility that the DLC stuff is really a post effort thing.

This is why I dont buy Capcom games on 1st day. I'll wait until they drop price and release down the line a gold, ultimate etc edition with all the dlc available from the getgo.

Screw it, from now on no more day 1 games. You get the full game in later months for $40. That goes for every single game.

Every single game has DLC, pre order bonuses, limited editions… etc. It's starting to piss me off because you aren't getting the full XP. Now, I wouldn't feel bad for buying games used even though I've only rarely done it. Now games have on disc DLC? What has gaming become?

Want to play the full Assassins Creed 3 game? Fork over $90. Max Payne 3? $90. You want every single car in Forza Horizon? That will be $110. All this DLC and season passes are unfair. Will it ever stop? It will get worse if it doesn't.

Also, Skyrim did get GOTY, so that means there should be a GOTY edition right? How will that be if Bethesda can't program DLC for the PS3 version?

=) Aight, enablers. Let's hear y'all defend this.

Who, me? Nah, I'm in no way even connected to this subject. I am not going to touch any DLC related product ever. PERIOD!

I just happen to have a strong opinion on strong bullshit.

Oh Capcom, you just don't learn. Like I said if they would give up this DLC gouging practice they would be loved by all. Well, I guess not by all since hardcore RE fans hate them even more now. Not very smart.

One solution for not having to deal with DLC is to buy the game of the year edition later on. However, the trade off would be that by then, the online community for that game probably bounced already.

I've got a loaf of bread I'd like to sell capcom. The package is $1. Each slice of bread inside the bag will cost them an additional 25 cents to access it.

Yeah, capcom's reasoning makes total sense.

H8WL3R

Ha ha, nah at least give them HALF, then the rest of the slices are sealed within a second bag and then sell them those slices for 25 cents each. They still do let people play at least half of what's there right? :-p

for now, soon they'll be selling us the disk, but we'll have to buy each individual level and in game item. Remember they want to go to micro transactions.

I know I'm late as all hell due to my circumstances, but honestly… People need to quit with the DLC on the disk bull. "I paid for the disc I should be entitled to its content" etcetera etcetera. But seriously, people just want a reason to complain. All I'll say is this, I don't have the harddrive space for standalone content. Having DLC already on the disc should technically cut the amount of space required for full digital downloads right. Hell, for me that's a perk. People say it's the devs and pubs being greedy, but I think the gamers nowadays are as well. People just have the "I paid for the object, so everything in the object is mine." Shoot, if you pay for a backpack and find some money inside, is the money yours since you paid for the backpack?

You buy a car. it has a radio inckuded for the price. You wnat Satellite? Buy it, pay for subscription, and add it. Capcom, as a car seller, would include a satellite radio in the price, but make you pay for the subscription and each station on it you want to listen to. This is the same as you buying and adding a satellite radio to them.

I buy a disc, I expect to be able to access everything on the disc. DLC's are extra's, after the fact.

"that for technical reasons, requires the use of a combination of newly downloaded data and data that is included on the retail game disc."

so i gather that the dlc on the disc is unfinished content?? Ok fine i can understand that.

but what crapcom should be saying is that the dlc on the disk will be a FREE upgrade/add-on when they get the coding straight. charging a customer full price for an uncomplete product and then charging them more to complete it is underhanded and sneaky. i was originally going to buy the collector set with all the previous RE's on it but thankfully i didnt and as to this new revelation i dropped all plans of buying it period.
