After I realized that The Last Of Us couldn't possibly make it this year, and after I got it through my thick totally in-denial skull that Grand Theft Auto V wouldn't make it, either, I had turned my attention to Bioshock Infinite .
I figured the Game of the Year race would come down to Infinite and Assassin's Creed III …and then Bioshock disappeared into next year and I got all depressed. Bioshock and Bioshock 2 remain two of my favorite experiences of this entire generation, and everything about Infinite just looked jaw-droppingly awesome.
But the more I think about it, the more I think we've got a very Bioshock -like game in the new title from Arkane Studios and Bethesda, Dishonored . Artistically, it looks closer to an Elder Scrolls adventure (no surprise there) but gameplay-wise, the game could be much closer to the fantastic franchise from Irrational. Dishonored is much more linear than something like Skyrim ; there are places to explore in the city, but there appears to be more of a focus on the story. Furthermore, the combination of skills is very much like Bioshock in my eyes; that mix of magic and physical capability seems familiar… Familiar and comforting, I say.
Granted, Bioshock is a first-person shooter blended with an RPG, while Dishonored is more of a straight RPG without the shooting. But even so, with my precious Bioshock Infinite gone away into February of 2013 (and it had better release then, despite the internal problems we've been hearing about), I have to think Dishonored is close…and I hope it turns out as expected. Stay tuned for the review, coming soon.
