We all talk about the best years in gaming history (1998 and 2001 are my personal favorites; I'm not alone) but what about individual quarters?
Because if we look at it this way, there's a chance that the first quarter of 2013 (January – March) could be the single best quarter we've ever seen in the industry's history.
After more delays and more confirmations for that quarter, the list has gotten borderline ridiculous. Those that are essentially set to go for Q1 2013 are: DMC , Bioshock Infinite , Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time , Crysis 3 , Dead Space 3 , Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch , Tomb Raider , God of War: Ascension , Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance , and Splinter Cell: Blacklist . That alone would put it in contention, I think. But a whole lot more could be dropping during that insane three-month period.
Grand Theft Auto V probably tops the list, as most analysts and industry insiders still believe Take-Two and Rockstar will deliver this blockbuster before the company's fiscal year is over (that ends on March 31, 2013). But there's also the possibility of seeing The Last Of Us , which could be the best damn game we've seen the entire generation, and now we're hearing that Final Fantasy XIII-3 might just get in there. FFXIII-2 launched in January of this year and Square Enix keeps saying they want to release their games at a faster clip. And that announcement might just come this week at the Final Fantasy 25th Anniversary celebration.
Plus, with the Wii U available, who knows what we might see for that, and speaking of the next generation, that hype could be through the roof during the first quarter. I'm not saying we'll see either the PS4 or Xbox 720 before April, but isn't part of the gaming culture the attitude and excitement about the industry in general…? Personally, I think that would be a contribution to a period of gaming, even if the systems aren't officially here yet.
Don't forget the new rainbow six! I imagine I'll be broke for a few months.
Whoa that list of games looks crazy I'll be buying most them. Next year maybe the best year yet. Metal Gear Anniversary event might have announcements since we get to see what the Fox Engine can do.
WII U Rayman Legends is a day one because I fell in love with with last years Rayman Origins.

Apparently the MGS Event is supposed to have "industry-shaking" announcements. There has to be a new game, at least. And 2013 is a reasonable window, considering we've seen nothing from KojiPro in over four years now. Wasted dev time on Rising, and ZoE is only in pre-production. Something BIG is coming.
"industy shaking" equals MGS5 multiplat.
'98 was the best gaming year in history to me. The original Playstation had some of the best games ever at a reasonable price.
First Quater of next year is gonna be insane. Why do they have to release so many good games with so little time to play. Dead Space 3,Ni No Kuni, and The Last Of Us are the only games I will get.
That list doesn't look too impressive to me, personally. But I do see where you're coming from.
I kind of agree. They're all games that have tons of potential that's a certainty. But there's really only 4 on that list that I think would really ever compete for any type of goty award. Again the others have huge potential, but Bioshock, DS3, Crysis 3 and GoW are really the only games that I could consider elite. That list would be more exciting if the Last of Us were releasing, and that game alone will make any day exciting, so…

@Nas, Same here, really only 2(Ni No Kuni & Crysis 3)of those are games I want with a third one being a possible(Bioshock), but like you said I can see why some people would be happy.
Rogue-
After NAS response, I really seen what he did. Now after reading your comment, even though there is only 2 (possibly 3) games you would get, they are 2 very different games. Maybe that's the real beauty of that list. It provides variety, and a List of games with massive amounts of potential.
Yeah I agree fully Big, especially if some of the potential releases make it into Q1. If some of those also make there way in there then we are looking at one seriously diverse collection of games.
I can no longer remember what happened in what year. I do want 4 of those games though.
There's a scared little boy inside me somewhere just waiting for the negative Ni No Kuni reviews and general dismissal from the gaming public. Piss on em', I'm still rolling on day 1.
Don't be so negative. From what I've seen, the press seems cautiously optimistic and if they aren't setting the bar too high, it's more likely that they'll walk away satisfied. I doubt that it'll get slammed too badly.
I'm not negative I'm afeared.
I'm going to say right now, if I have the money… GTA V and The Last of Us are the must buys for me.
Well the estimated date for The Last of Us here says the 29th of March 2013 so add that to the list.
Stop reminding me. So many purchasable games… So little PS3 :'(
But hell, Q1 may be in contention, but 2013 could very well be the best year EVER for games when you add the likes of Beyond, Remember Me, Alien: Colonial Marines, GeoW: Judgement, Castlevania: LoS2, and potentially The Last Guardian, Versus XIII and Fallout 4 to that already bombastic list.
What a year the gamers shall have. I just hope the Vita gets heaps of love too 🙂
that is indeed pretty ipressive, although i fear some of them might end up in Q2.
It is going to be a big year, no doubt. But you have to look at the sacrifice made this year because of it. I have bought more Wii titles than PS3 games this year. The only PS3 titles I have bought are Final Fantasy XIII-2 & The MGS HD Collection – I question if I can even count the second title as it is a HD re-release.
But as for 2013, oh it's gonna be big. I can't wait to get my hands on:
No Ni Kuni- a real traditional JRPG experience we've all been waiting for.
TOMB RAIDER – still has my attention, I love the new visceral approach to the design.
Bioshock: Infinite – I still have only watched the first trailer, but that was enough, I cannot wait to see what it has to offer.
Then of course there are a few maybes, Rising still has me on the fence, I just cannot get over the new direction, I think I'll be getting it cheaper. Same with The Last of Us, I love Naughty Dog and I know the game will deliverer but since Fallout 3 I have had enough of the whole post-aposyalpitic setting, it's just been so over used since F3, 'The Road' was the last film where I really put my foot down. But to me it still looks just like a rougher version of Uncharted.
Then of course is the big news this week The Final Fantasy & Metal Gear 25th Anniversary! I am hoping for some huge announcements including the release date for FF: Type-0, Versus XIII & XIII-3 – Big stuff. Then there is Metal Gear, a new project is in production, It's only a matter of time until it is revealed – if any of these reach us before Q2 2013 I'll be so excited – yes, even for Versus again 😛
that happens every year though, once the time comes it ends up being massively disappointing!
DS3 looks pretty crap, so does MGSR, DMC, and sly 4 $ony were MAD to delay that till next year!
GOWA im intrigued to see what the story is like, but after the MASSIVE disappointment that was GOW3 im not exactly holding my breath………
bioshock infinite, crysis 3, tomb raider, and splinter cell blacklist are really the only ones that are guaranteed hits!
not exactly excessive amount of titles for said time of year, in fact weve had plenty more in the past!
last of us wont be out in the first quarter, $ony already has beyond 2 souls and GOWA there not going to release 3 games within a month!
that will be releasing later in the year like all ND and big games do.
Dude_________, how in the world is GOW3 a MASSIVE disappointment?! Your anus shouldn't be used as your mouth
take your own advice.
oh and to answer the question there were not as many boss battles as 2 which was disappointing, they were no where near as fun and well thought out.
the puzzles were pretty small, easy and boring.
biggest hardest puzzle in the game would be heras garden, compare that to some of the puzzles in GOW1 or 2.
yea, thats what i thought!
exactly what pisses me off about gamers this gen!
all they give a sh*t about is amazing graphics and gore!
GOW3!
who cares about the gameplay, story, the things that ACTUALLY MATTER!
It's kinda cute of you to mention Final Fantasy XIII-3 in this context, Ben. 🙂 You surely must be the very last person on the entire planet to jump the FF ship. 😀
But shouldn't also Watch Dogs be on that list? From what little we have seen it looks pretty darn AAA…!
For me Ni No Kuni & Dead Space 3, The Last Of Us if it will be release in Q1. It will be exciting who will be the top seller. I just wish it will be Ni No Kuni, so Level-5 can make more high quality jrpg.
DS3, bioshock & ni no kuni are D1P for me. I'll be fine on the funds side bebecause the only game I plan on buying this year is ACIII
My gaming list for Q1 2013:
The Last of Us
Beyond: Two Souls
Bioshock Infinite
Tomb Raider
Dead Space 3
South Park: The Stick of Truth
and, maybe… if I have the time and money, Ni No Kuni Wrath of the White Witch
as for Q4 2012?
Assassin's Creed III
Halo 4
Rocksmith (late arrival in Australia)
Dead or Alive 5
maybe Dishonored if I have the time and money.
Yeah… 2013 looks like a better year. 2012 has given me a chance to save my pennies. Except for Steam sales, spent over $200 on about 30 games!! Gabe Newell can add my money to his money fort.
Yeah Rocksmith is on my list too! I really look forward to get to use my guitar again.
DmC
MGR:R
GoW:A
Sly Cooper:TIT
Tomb Raider
Are my games 4 next year.
I might look at MGS because of the quality of any title they produce. The rest? N.I.Maybe GOW.
