With the closing of Zipper Interactive, long-time SOCOM fans have been wondering if one of their favorite franchises would disappear as well.
But despite the unfortunate end of the MAG developer, Sony says their popular and generally well-received third-person multiplayer-oriented franchise would remain.
SCE boss Shuhei Yoshida told OPM (as mentioned in the PlayStation forums ) that any concerned SOCOM followers needn't freak out:
"It’s not done. We never definitely retire any franchise. It’s sometimes great to have a fresh look at the classics that we have."
Of course, this doesn't confirm that a new SOCOM installment is currently in the works; it just means that we can't write the death certificate. But as a follow-up to Yoshida's never-say-die attitude concerning Sony's classic franchises, he cited the upcoming Sly Cooper: Theives in Time . You may recall that it took a while and many believed we'd never see the mischievous raccoon again.
I never got into SOCOM but I could usually see why people liked the games so much. They weren't too tough to pick up and play, and they definitely encouraged teamwork and strategic approaches, which I always appreciate. Here's hoping the series returns some day soon.
