With the closing of Zipper Interactive, long-time SOCOM fans have been wondering if one of their favorite franchises would disappear as well.

But despite the unfortunate end of the MAG developer, Sony says their popular and generally well-received third-person multiplayer-oriented franchise would remain.

SCE boss Shuhei Yoshida told OPM (as mentioned in the PlayStation forums ) that any concerned SOCOM followers needn't freak out:

"It’s not done. We never definitely retire any franchise. It’s sometimes great to have a fresh look at the classics that we have."

Of course, this doesn't confirm that a new SOCOM installment is currently in the works; it just means that we can't write the death certificate. But as a follow-up to Yoshida's never-say-die attitude concerning Sony's classic franchises, he cited the upcoming Sly Cooper: Theives in Time . You may recall that it took a while and many believed we'd never see the mischievous raccoon again.

I never got into SOCOM but I could usually see why people liked the games so much. They weren't too tough to pick up and play, and they definitely encouraged teamwork and strategic approaches, which I always appreciate. Here's hoping the series returns some day soon.

I hope they make a proper Socom game, I miss the old days of playing Socom 1, and Socom 2 back in the day. If they do decide to make one of course.

I wish they would pay to resurrect third party games and make them exclusive.

most fans of the series seem to think that they need to do an HD reboot of 1 and 2, and then build from there..

That's absolutely what they need to do. The reason being is we probably would never see a proper Socom again, otherwise.

The way gamers play and the way games are developed now, you would never see a Socom like Socom 2 again. And the sad part of that is Socom 2 was a winning formula and they fail to see that. Yes something need to be upgraded like the controls, and the graphics and so on. That could be achieved in an HD remake. If long time Socom fans don't go running back to that then sure, go a different route. But Socom 4 sure wasn't what fans wanted.

oh bullshit!
sorry shuhei but we were not born yesterday!
the day we see SOCOM return is the day we see crash bandicoot, spyro, ape escape, jack & daxter, GEX, medievil, kill switch, 8 days, the getaway 3, heavenly sword, HAZE, and syphon filter put together!

Just give me all the maps from S-1 – CA. HD graphics and no tweaks to the view, online only and you will never have to make another Socom Again.

I hope there is a socom confrontation 2, the original really wasnt that bad. The game was not supported right and the servers are laggy. But if there would be a dedicated company were to take up the reigns and support it properly and return the series to its roots along with some features that are new then that socom game would be a hit. Just do not implement any kind of cover system, other than being able to lean around a corner and not be glued to it like most cover systems.

Aye, S:Con once they got to patch 1.6 was one of the best online shooters this gen – they just needed to launch it at that state, rather than as the buggy train-wreck they did.

But building off either S2 or S:Con would be just fine, although I think commercially building off S2 would be the way to go. I soooo want this back, MAG's the only MP shooter that's ever come close to the SOCOM franchise for me, everything else just gets a bit boring quick.

Socom Confrontation was absolute trash. Zipper was the key and now they are gone.

I tried to get into SOCOM but everytime I got into a server I got kicked out by little boys clubs…waste of time and money… BF3 anytime.
