Last week, it was the rumor that shocked the entire gaming world .
Okay, maybe that's a slight exaggeration but either way, it seems that in fact, Final Fantasy Versus XIII has not been canceled. So put away the torches and pitchforks and stop planning the daring assault on Square Enix HQ.
According to Andriasang citing Square Enix CEO Yoichi Wada's Twitter page, one of the most anticipated titles of the generation remains in development. Wada was apparently part of a "periodic meeting" for the game and claimed that the quality of the cityscape during the presentation "could make you lose your footing." …we're not entirely sure what that means, but maybe the English translation implies that it was so good, it would knock us off our feet; bowl us over, so-to-speak. He didn't say anything about when they might fully unveil the game, though.
Really, we'd just like a few clarifying tidbits, like intended platforms and estimated launch date. You don't have to be exact, just give us an idea. Otherwise, these cancellation rumors won't die…

When was the last time Kotaku was right about supposedly "leaked" info? It seems they're wrong a LOT.
They're 99% never right when they're the only source given for a rumor.
Hmmm……last I checked, we don't post our own rumors very often but when we do, we're 75%….three out of four. 😉
Then again, we don't hear everything a big site like Kotaku hears. I'd be more inclined to post more if I got that much info, too.

I'm inclined to give Kotaku the benefit of the doubt here, because I doubt they would post a rumor like that if it didn't come from a source closely involved in the Versus XIII project.
Also, while it's nice of Wada to assure us the game is still under development, until I see gameplay footage and an estimated release date, I will remain deeply skeptical this game will actually be released. Remember, according to Kotaku the supposed reason they didn't want to announce an all-out cancellation is because they didn't want to deal a blow to their stock prices. While the game may technically still be under development, it could also be true they don't expect the game to be finished. At least, not as Versus XIII.
Those fanboys are butthurt it hasn't been named for 360 yet.
Great! now that mess is out of the way we can look forward to seeing what Wada saw September the 1st right?
Thank the gods!
🙂 Told you so
lol LV, as soon as I saw the article I came here to see if you'd say that. I wasn't let down.
Never believed the rumor for a second. Glad they finally confirmed it's not canceled.
Now let's see some footage running on PS3 hardware and hear a release date, Square, shall we?
I never believed Versus was cancelled Im sure the haters are disappointed by this news.
A periodic meeting to…
…decide whether or not to admit that the game has gone Multi-platform?
…decide whether or not to admit that the game is actually cancelled?
…decide whether or not to admit that the game will released after FFXIV for PS3?
…decide when to admit that the game has been moved to 2014 on PS4?
My thoughts, exactly.
I can't say I'm not at least curious about the game, since I was a fan of Final Fantasy up about to the point where this game was first shown.
Anything Final Fantasy just rubs me the wrong way now.
Some healthy skepticism of a tweet that did not include gameplay footage, a release date, ANYTHING tangible at all, is well warranted here. A "game meeting" could have been for anything, including any of the possibilities listed by highlander. Seems just as likely the game is in an impossible rut, as it has been for most or all of its development cycle, and SE doesn't want to announce a cancellation, lest they unleash the fury of fans and shareholders.
Glad that the rumor is false. I wonder if it's a trick by kotaku to lure square into giving some info about versus or a strategy by square to get everyones attention for their upcoming event? But then again who cares, just glad that it still coming. Hope i'm still alive when it's finally release.
good. now I just need "PSN Update Day" (it's like a mini-holiday every week) to bring me Suikoden 2. If not, I'll default to playing FFIV. I only got half way through that one on SNES back in the day.
well, crap. no SUikoden 2. And here I thought FFIV was a $10 download; instead, it's a special remake for PSP. That's cool. Probably the one I should play but it's $20 and I want to play the original code first.
oh well, I think Xenogears is up next then. I already have that one downloaded and it's been a top spot favorite of some respected jRPG PSX friends of mine.

This is a pretty cool feature at IGN.
Suikoden 2 made the list. Just think, out of thousands of games that one made the list =)
I've played about 1/3 of Vagrant Story as well. I liked that one too, even if I'm not much for dungeon crawl feeling games. I just liked how it got real detailed with armor and weapon stypes (piercing, blunt, slashing), hit levels etc., it almost reminds of like a turn based Demon's Souls… kinda sorta =p

FFIV: The Complete Collection for the PSP was amazing. If you happen to own a PSP then I definitely suggest acquiring said game.
hmmm, thanks Mr A, if FFIV doesn't appear as a PSX classic anytime soon I'll probably catch this FFIV remake on a deal, like a $10 deal. I know $20 is probably already a good deal but I gotta keep things dirt cheap for a while. DOA5 has got me tapped at $60.
So what makes this new remake FFIV so much better?
Does it have the original sprites and music and sounds built into it as well?
Just for nostalgia reasons I sort of want to experience these games as I rememebered them at the time they were new. They're games I missed at the time but now am coming back to.
Not surprised and very happy. Hopefully we get some juicy tidbits soon.
Well that was fun wasn't it? We still probably won't see it for 6 more years anyway.
Don't be too optimistic
I won't lie. I was glad to hear this. But I'm still wary. I'm actually not sure what would be worse: the game being cancelled or the game going multiplatform (and all that that entails).
You can't possibly mean that . A multi platform game is much better than no game at all.
Not when it comes to SE Nightmare.
SE's issues can't be blamed on the inclusion of multiple console versions of their games.
FF13 was a great game IMO. Even if FF13 would have been exclusive, I still don't believe you would have gotten your towns. The game it ended up being is probably the game it was always meant to be.
Well whatever the case, FFXIII doesn't look as remotely close to looking as polish as the FFvsXIII trailer, and that was awhile ago. Heck, it even looks like FFXIII-2 took some downgrade in visuals from the original FFXIII. Plus, they had to take away all the CG, cutscene goodness because of the DVD's limit. It doesn't end there… bigger maps means bigger data. If SE want this to go multi-plat, it will certainly cause even longer delays and unnecessary tactics of catering to the lowest common denominator.
I want this game to be pushed "hard."… and the best system to do it with is the PS3, and to focus only for it. With 6 years in since the announcement, wouldn't you want this game to be the best as it can be? I'd actually agree that multiplatform status would be better than no game at all, but I'm sick of the thought of all the "what-ifs" if it does decide to go multiplat. What we're talking about here are games that are "meant" for the PS3 and later decided to be ported at the last moment.
SE is eyeing $$$ right now, especially with all the Western madness they're trying to pursue with all the purchases of 3rd party devs. They wouldn't mind sacrificing a bit of quality for more $$$. It's too evident with FFXIII…. in my opinion at least. I don't care about the other games, but please leave THIS one exclusive.

Sure took them awhile to come out and give us this info. As it has regarding any info on the game. So my conclusion is the meeting was about the decision to cancel the game after the reaction from fans. If that's the case, this is the best decision they've made this generation.
Was just about to post something like this. Agreed may be the best decision they made all Gen.
Now the wait.
Interesting theory…
Aahhh! The wait!
It takes them way to long to address anything regarding this game. I just don't understand. Which is how I draw my conclusion.
Well smart move from Square bc if they did cancel that game it would be the nail in the coffin for old school RPG fans and everyone would turn their back on Square since Versus XIII might be the only game that changes ppls minds about their crappy decisions this generation
That is good news…I guess I'll care about SE a little longer, but they are still on the chopping block for me.
Well now we just have to go back to wondering whether it will be an amazing rpg or if SE will once again disappoint.
I think kotaku published that rumor to provoke some info out of S-E, and if that was the case it worked. because those guys hardly have anything to say when it comes to FFvsXIII, now all we need is some screens a new trailer and a release date. This holiday would be good but that's just wishful thinking, but 1 can hope…..
That would make christmas this year exceptional.
Its not cancelled its just "delayed"…..bah!!
Its just releasing some time SOON tm.
Before the debut of the Playstation Nine we "may" see a game called Versus 13 since its still being "worked on"
Its just a small multi-year delay but the game is not "cancelled" and in a few decades it may be ready.
A single piece of concept art being "worked on" does not equal a full game being developed.
slight exaggeration?
dude, the game has not seen ANY footage or anything since it was announced 6 years ago!
how can a cancellation be such a shock?
in fact quite the opposite, its a shock that its still in development.
IF its still in development!
just because the CEO says it is does not mean it is.
first off of course hes going to say its still in production!
if it had been canned they would not say anything because its $E!
and if they did say something there would be a formal press release, not just the CEO responding to rumours!
secondly gotta love it how $E resonds to the rumours the day they release with a no comment, than days later they decide to speak on it.
coincidence?
im a detective son, im not allowed to believe in coincidences!
Did you not see the 6 minute trailer filled with gameplay they released just last year? You're obviously not well informed. Pick up a copy ofthe August issue of Game Informer. They actually have a timeline of Versus XIII updates. In your case, it would most likley be like looking into the future or something, lol.
Can we get a big I told you so.
Duh again, guys. Duh again…
But it's so much more fun to rumor monger than report and discuss factual information! Let's say it's now a 360 exclusive instead of PS3. 🙂
Thats great and all, but when the hell is this game finally hitting a system, any system? Just get the ball rolling…
I really hope it will be worth the wait.
