The Last Of Us , Beyond: Two Souls , and God of War: Ascension won't hit until next year. So what big PlayStation 3 exclusives will fuel hardware sales for the 2011 holiday season?
After all, while we expect both Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time and PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale to be great, they're probably not "blockbusters" in the strictest sense of the term. And typically, PS3 owners have come to expect some massive big-time titles for the holiday season; Uncharted has often led the charge, for example. So what's Sony's plan? Well, according wo that Sony Worldwide Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida told Game Informer (as cited by Gaming Everything ):
"We’d love to have multi-million sellers for the holiday. But each title needs time to develop, especially new IP like The Last of Us. God of War has always come out in March, so that’s a natural time to aim at. Our strategy for Christmas is to go big on family-friendly titles. This is a neglected genre for the PlayStation 3, but as it matures, I think it’s really important to have these games on the platform. I think we have a great lineup this holiday to complement third parties’ big core games."
You may recall that Sony spent a great deal of time with Wonderbook at E3. I've got no problem with a family-friendly approach (it has worked for Nintendo for years), but I'll definitely miss the mature heavy hitters.
I'm all for Sony making some damn $$$ to get them on the positive side of things but when I hear "family friendly" I immediately cringe.
Me too. I also wonder if it really is that much money in the "family friendly" stuff for this brand.
Yhea… it just sounds nasty… As Ben says, want the heavy hitters!
Q!
"play.experience.enjoy"
Yeah, I don't think family friendly will bring in the big bucks. Hence it has been neglected.
It's a bummer for us adults but you had to see it coming with certain titles moving into 2013 lately. It's cool with me though because of a backlog including games I just never finished or got distracted from that taunt me from the shelf. Plus there will be extra money for titles releasing in 2013 and I don't have to pick and choose what to buy day 1 or what to wait on. I can grab DmC, Beyond, and TLoU right away if I want (hopefully).
Um, not to be too much of a pain in the ass, but grown ups, aka adults, do not need action games, or survival horror, or shooters, in order to be entertained. In fact if anything, the level of maturity of a gamer could be measured by looking at the proportion of violent content in a game. Simply take the inverse of that proportion and you will find that more mature adults do not (in general) prefer the most violent titles.
I wasn't saying it has to be violent to be for adults but when games are aimed at families they tend to be about as entertaining for adults as Dora the Explorer. If that's your bag as a grown up then fine but you aren't the audience without your kids by your side.

LOL, Ratchet takes offense to the Dora comment…
if sony wants to make money on family freindly titles,
they need something fresh and be able to kick mario's as_.
Seems like they're banking on Black Ops to shift units eh?
No, more like Assassin's Creed 3. That game's gonna have a PS3 bundle. (And a Vita bundle, too)
and that is why my ps3 has been collecting dust since uncharted 3 came out last november!
sad, my freaking wii has had more attention!
sigh.
when will $ony understand they cant steal nintys crowd, and never will?
every single crappy kids game they have made has bombed in the sales charts.
yet they still refuse to get it through their thick skulls!!!!!
what do we have to do so $ony will stop wasting their time and money on this useless sh*t 20 people want, and start putting their resources into something that might actually turn a profit for them?
no wonder there in the worst financial position the company has been in its entire HISTORY!

If your PS3 has been collecting dust all that time, why do you still bother posting here?

Then you should just go back to playing with your little Wii Wii & leave commenting on this PS3 site to all the grownups.
What's most confusing about this to me is how he managed to play his "glitchy PS3 version of Mass Effect 3" if he hasn't played this calendar year.
I don't know about you guys but, honestly, I have MORE than enough games until (probably) the end of the generation. Just Uncharted 3, LBP2 & GT5 occupy just about all my gaming time.
Infact, I really do think I'll buy maybe 4 titles that have already come out (I'm thinking maybes the Batman & Assassin's Creed series) and two new games (in the form of The Last Of Us & Beyond) & then that'll be it for this generation.
So Sony can switch attention to 'family-friendly' games all they want; I've already had my fill of the good stuff. 🙂

Xmas will be boring as hell this year…
Nope! As per usual, I'm gonna be watching movies with the family next to a fire while drinking Advocat. Christmas is going to rock, as usual.
I thought only the British were strange enough to drink Advocat?
Also the dutch. And my wife's family is 100% dutch. They converted me. With my family, it's scotch. It wasn't much of a stretch, I guess. My grandparents immigrated from England.

That's cool Im only interested in Beyond and Last Guardian from Sony.
Neglected Genre? I'll tell you what genre is neglected by Sony America – JRPGs. When SCEA can't even bother it's arse to localize and publish a game that Sony owns (WKC2), it's pretty clear that a) the genre is neglected and b) SCEA doesn't give a damn about those gamers that like the genre. If it's not a shooter or action title SCEA are not interested. But, this year since they have none of those, they have to make a virtue out of focusing on casual gamers…*sigh*
