David Cage’s Writing Turned Ellen Page Into A Game Believer

Want to impress someone who is unfamiliar with modern video games? Show them a fantastic script penned by David Cage's Quantic Dream.

As most everyone knows by now, Ellen Page is the actress that will portray Jodie Holmes in Quantic's new project, Beyond: Two Souls . But when she was first approached for the role, she didn't really get it. As reported by USA Today and cited by the Belfast Telegraph , she "didn't understand what it meant to be in a video game."

But then she went and read the script. She said she was "so moved by this young female protagonist, who was strong and complex and interesting, and a story that was profound and subversive and emotional." Page also added:

"David is telling stories by having these games with complex emotions and ethical and moral choices that lead to significant consequences. How an audience interacts with that, I think, is really interesting."

Yeah. We better call these video games, because they're doing the most for this industry in terms of artistry, maturity, and progression. And if you'd like to see Page and Cage (sounds like a superhero duo) interviewed, here's the latest from the PlayStation Blog :

There's no doubt about it, it's projects like these that will lead to gaming being a more accepted form of entertainment for adults.

It's that complex emotional journey that simply can't be portrayed without player interaction that I really like. No matter how intense a movie is it doesn't rely on me to decide the outcome and that's where creativity gets a chance to reach heights that weren't ever possible in older entertainment mediums.

Unless you bought the Harold & Kumar: Escape From Guantanamo Bay Bluray, it actually did rely on you to decide the outcome 😉

I know it isn't the best movie to use as an example, but it is one none the less.

I get your point about interactive DVDs but they don't quite reach the level of a game's outcome depending on your performance as in a main character's death.

Watched the interview yesterday. It wasn't the best interview I've ever seen, but anything about this game makes it worth the gander.

nice to see his influences even have power outside the industry!
its a shame we dont have many like him.
id like to imagine how different this gen would of been if COD was the niche, rare title, and not heavy rain.
would of made things much more interesting and emotional thats for sure!

Her character Ariadne (I think?) in Inception makes her a good choice.

I refuse to watch Juno.
