There aren't many developers like David Cage, and there aren't many studios like Quantic Dream. In fact, both Cage and his team might be unique.

The guy that brought you Heavy Rain is now working on the highly anticipated PlayStation 3 exclusive, Beyond: Two Souls , and he recently spoke to GamesIndustry.biz about the future of the industry.

He first says that his team's focus on storytelling is very much a personal thing, as he is the primary author for just about everything. In most cases, there are a good twenty people working on that story, he says, but that's not how it goes at Quantic Dream. Cage is out to express something, and his intention is to create emotion in the mind of the player. He's not into making substance-less blockbusters simply for the sake of high sales around the holidays.

"It's not up to me to tell the industry what they should or should not do. There are very clever people out there and they know what they want to do. I can only talk for my studio. I wouldn't be interested in making just software to sell to people at Christmas. I'm not that kind of person and I'm not interested in that. I respect people doing this, but it's not how I see my work. I'm interested in using this medium to express something and to trigger deeper emotions. I think you can do it if you make movies, if you make TV series… all expression forms are great for that. But games, we just shoot and jump. What about trying something else and using it?"

Cage went on to say that gaming is a "fantastic medium" and he does wish more people were attempting his style of development. Unsurprisingly, he has some high praise for Thatgamecompany's Journey , which is the best-reviewed game of the year thus far.

"…the last game I really enjoyed is Journey, for example. Journey was amazing. It has nothing to do with what I'm doing. But it's not so much about storytelling. It's about emotion. It's about trying something different. I mean this industry will die if it doesn't try more to be innovative and to come up with new ideas and to talk a bit more – not necessarily serious, but deeper things at some point."

We're right there with ya, David.

I hope some more true artists that want to express their deepness take up gaming as the medium of choice. The games industry is ready for them to join and the movie industry has kind of rejected them in favor of more base experiences.

I'd like to see Quantic take on a second studio branch of like-minded professionals that use their engine architecture to tell more great stories but at a slightly faster pace. I know Cage likes to up the ante with every release but who could complain about a well told narrative using the same tech as Heavy Rain?

sigh.
only if we had more men like him!
i hereby declare sir david cage king and boss of the video game industry!
hopefully now he can flex some more creativity, drama and drive to do something different in the industry.
i wouldent go as far to say that the industry will die if we dont!
but it will certainly loose allot of influence and fans!

Everything Mr. Cage say I seem to like. If only he could be promoted to President of SCEA then maybe the PS3 could get the games it deserves…..
