The PlayStation 3 is already pretty slim. It lost a bunch of unappealing weight after going on a big-time diet back in 2009.
But you know, it could still be a little slimmer, don't you think? According to a new FCC filing (as noted by Japanese source Pocket News and cited by Eurogamer ), Sony is currently prepping a 4000-series PlayStation 3 model, which obviously indicates a step up from the standard 3000 line.
There are no additional specifics at this time, but Eurogamer has heard through the grapevine that Sony is ready to announce a slimmer PS3 at Gamescom 2012 in August. That shouldn't be too surprising, as Gamescom 2009 was the site of Sony's last slimming-down announcement, when they revealed their flagship console would be getting 32% smaller, 36% lighter, and 34% more efficient.
The trend in electronics is the same for just about everything: Smaller and sleeker. Besides, if Sony can manufacture the new 4000 PS3 for a cheaper price, that'll help their bottom line, and they could use the boost. As for what this says about when the PS4 will show up…well, maybe nothing.
