Mass Effect 3: Extended Cut Seeks To Heal Wounds Next Week

BioWare and EA responded to the well-documented fan backlash concerning the ending(s) of Mass Effect 3 .

This response consisted of the Extended Cut announcement, which sought to calm the fan freak-out…although it remains to be seen if the franchise followers will be satisfied with the effort.

Well, we won't have much longer to wait. Mass Effect 3: Extended Cut has been confirmed for a June 26 launch; it will be available for all three versions – PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, PC – of the critically acclaimed title. This content will feature more cut-scenes and more content, which is designed to enhance the somewhat lacking epilogue. According to the developer's official website :

"The Extended Cut expands on the endings of Mass Effect 3 through additional scenes and epilogue sequences. It provides more of the answers and closure that players have been asking for. It gives a sense of what the future holds as a result of the decisions made throughout the series. And it shows greater detail in the successes or failures based on how players achieved their endings."

In our estimation, BioWare deserved more of a vacation than they got. But maybe the team can finally relax now .

1.9GB download is quite large. I listened to the podcast and basically sounds like it would be larger if Microsoft didn't limit DLC to 2gb

The fan backlash was totally entitlement baby like but the ending really was rushed & half assed. Gamers still need to respond better when something like this happens. Otherwise gamers will still get no respect & we'll continue to be looked upon as the group that needs to grow up

Speak for yourself SoulContoller. Bioware told us that our decisions we made in the prior games would have an impact on the endings and they did not. So don't go around lecturing gamers to grow up becasue we complained when we were presented with 3 generic choices that didn't change no matter what choices we made in the previous games.

The reason gamers complained were legitimate.

I don't know whether to be excited or terrified. On one hand this could turn the finale of this series into the best thing ever. And on the other. If they mess this up, that's it. And I don't know if I could kill marauder shields again.

Agreed. Bioware has some real explaining to do on that Extended Cut when it completely contradicted some of the stuff they themselves established (e.g. destruction of mass relays and their effect on the star system they're in).

I'll be looking forward to the release though and I do hope it does a decent job at actually finishing the trilogy. Though I'm probably better off not holding my breath.

Awesome. So I just played through ME2's Arrival earlier this week in order to delve into ME3. I'm pretty dang stoked for this. I loved Arrival and I LOVE MASS EFFECT. I think it's my top new franchise of the entire console generation. It's just so awesome in so many ways. Props Bioware for not altering the core vision of the story but at the same time giving fans more of what they obviously love as much as I do, to help create greater solvency for this epic trilogy that appeared to be lacking from this year's earlier headlines. It's great knowing the fans love the game that much to care that much and send Bioware cupcakes as a way of saying "more please, and thank you"
awesome

I suppose you haven't finished ME3 yet, Temjin? I was just like you are until, well, that ending. LOL Don't get me wrong though. The game's still brilliant and is absolutely one of the best this generation. The ending just left so much to be desired (at least for me and a few others I know who actually acted very civilized though the whole brouhaha).

I haven't. But it seems like that's what they're doing with this DLC, giving us more closure. From everything I gathered from everyone's complaints, I'm getting the feeling the ending, as it is, has something Super Mario Bro 2 going on. Just a guess 😉
BUt seeing that Bioware is sticking to that plot, just adding more closure, Im think it's a good thing.

To bad, i got rid of ME3 like 4 weeks ago. Nice 28$ from Gamestop too. Hopefully people who didnt like the ending will be satisfied with the endings. I was happy with the ending i got so im not disapointed about missing out.

Okay here's whats going to happen. After the space Apocalypse scene, the scene is going to fade in to white to shepard and the council in ME1 and shepard says 'And that's what happens if you we don't stop saren'. They agree, defeat the reapers in ME1. ME2 and ME3 is rewritten with ceberus as the bad guys.

JM tweeted the chart for EC on the choices you made in the game.

Why didn't they just do that from the beginning?

Although I'm ok with knowing there is different outcomes, im actually glad to know I get to see those outcomes.

I remember getting into many arguments here about wether or not there were different endings and I'm just glad this whole ordeal is hopefully put to rest. I really hope this satisfies the fans out there. But I still feel the franchise is a little tainted. Or perhaps since this trilogy is over the next ME game will flourish with and be somewhat of a new beginning.

An ending is an ending. ME3 ended the way the developers intended it too so if this DLC does cost money i won't be bothering as i've seen the "ending" yeah? 😉

If it's free, then yes, i will check it out.

Endings aside, i reckon the laziest thing about ME3 was……

POSSIBLE SPOILER, DON'T READ!!

The piss poor attempt of using some lass off google images as an unveiling of Tali's face.

xenris

There is no way this was how the developers intended to end the game. It was obviously rushed due to time constraints. Especially when weeks before launch they are saying how different and grand the endings are going to be.

I think what they are doing now is how they intended it to end.

Well when I seen that the dlc was coming out I stopped playing my ME3 I would like to believe i'm somewhere like halfway through the game. So it leaves me wondering, When I download the dlc, will it just basically slide right into the story, or do I have to replay the whole game?

ZettaiSeigi

You have to replay parts of the game. Maybe the last hour or so of it, depending on how fast you beat the enemies.

Yup, you're still good. But even if you're past that, it shouldn't be too bad. You get to see why so many people complained over the original endings. And to repeat the last few bits are not a big deal really.

Going to be honest and say that I wasn't impressed by the ending (not an entitlement rant) but will like to see how they further explain it.

I still think this will be a dark day for the gaming industry. Mass Effect fans went overboard on this and quite frankly don't have the right to change creative decisions within a game by moaning. I actually have no respect for any of them. As I said the real crime was that we never got Mass Effect 1 on the PS3… But everybody was fine with that… I don't understand people…

I've held back the final stage of ME3 waiting for this to arrive. Going to be great to finish that game.

I gotta say though, ME2 is by far my favourite of the two. The third is – and rightfully so but still – "just" an ending. It's one grand finale.

The second game was a much more exciting story to explore, it had more meat on the bone. But also the characters were a lot more interesting, and we were given much more time with each character.
So, yeah, ME2 is what made me a fan of the franchise.

That's crap. Mass effect fans didn't go overboard.
Bioware let the fans down with their major plot holes and half assed endings.

It's not entitlement, when fans point out errors and inconsistencies in the story.

Vivi_Gamer

Creating a charity against the company goes far beyond merely point out an error. The fans were way out of line! If they are unhappy with the plot lines they can do what all the staff of Bioware had to do – Study and work hard into getting recruited into the gaming industry. Grumpy fans do not have a right to change creative peoples work. End of.

I'd go as far as to say consumers have a responsibility to speak up and organize. I'd love to see this level of involvement in getting Final Fantasy back on track.

All consumers are entitled to their opinion.

It becomes entitlement when hostility reigns and knee-jerk reactions from extraordinarily spoiled individuals dominate the majority of those opinions.

We should do something to get FF back on track. Me and my friend were talking about FF9 and just how awesome Final Fantasy games used to be.

I seriously don't understand what they are doing over at square, but at the very least we should be showing that we want FF13 Versus, and not another FF13 sequel.

meh.
NOTHING bioware can do to fix their f*ck up!
they have destroyed the ME franchise with the steaming pile they called ME3, so sadly nothing they can do to fix that.
they just need to move on, do a reboot for the franchise, a prequel or something take it as FAR away from ME3 as possible!

pretty disappointing the timing too.
i mean seriously is there ONE developer out there that has access to a calendar?
just one!?
weve had 1 ps3 game release since late may!
thats 1 game for 5 weeks!
now R&C, anarchy reigns, spec ops the line, leggo batman 2, and spiderman are releasing they decide to release this.
sigh.
why is it that every single time a game or game content comes out it has to come out the same time as 210 others?
wish developers would coordinate themselves better so we had 4 games 1 per week, instead of 4 games 0 for 29 days of the month than the 4 on 1!
than they wonder why their games sell poorly.
hmmmmmmmm i wonder!!!!!!!

It's more than grumpy fans. EA/Bioware has made some major screw ups…First they disregarded their own lore in the novel Mass Effect Deception.
Then they screwed up with Mass Effect 3 story by not proofreading it.
While i wouldn't have created a charity. I'm glad they were willing to go out of their way to make the fans happy.:)

Vivi_Gamer

Who pays attention to the books anyway, in my eye if they cross media with novels, comics or cartoons it just doesn't count. A game story should be told through a game alone.

As for ME3, there were far bigger issues like ME1 not appearing on the PS3. I seem to be the only one who finds it immoral starting a trilogy from the 2nd title. But as I have already said, fans are spoilt nowadays they have no right to revolt like they did. Did we get such charities even over the Matrix trilogy… no. I don't see why ME fans think they're so full of them self they can order developers around, its out of order.

Originally a double post but I'd just use the space to add something else.

However a lore was actually delivered or told, but it is considered canon, then you have to accept it for what it is. Have you not been exposed to game franchises that transcend just video games? Japan has plenty of them. Manga, animes, stage shows, etc.

Oh I am entitled to a lot, as are the majority of us on this site. But I am not ungrateful for it. Which is all I can say for people on this ME3 bandwagon. Heck I even I have games I have despised. Take Final Fantasy XII, that was incredibly hard for me to take as it felt nothing like an FF games – But that aside I didn't make a charity cause and go against the creators who have brought me so much inspiration and joy.

What's wrong with charity?

I think this post even shows how while most gamers try to be civilized and adult about manners, some cannot help but sound like whining children. While a great many fans were enraged by the on disc endings of ME3 not every single one of them acted like a child about it. Ultimadream, you mention the "charity" created to alter the end of the game. Would a child get together a group of like minded individuals and raise money to pay the developers for their time in making a new ending? How is that childish? I personally did not contribute in anyway and this is actually the first I've discussed the matter here on the internet, but I find it respectful that gamers tried to raise money so that work could be done on fixing a problem. While we are all very happy that the new DLC will be free, and believe it deserves to be free, some people felt that they would contribute so the people making the free content would still get paid.
You mention the Matrix movies. That's a tough comparison. The 3 main Matrix movies require about 6 hours and 43 minutes of your time to watch (including credits). I don't know anyone who played the Mass Effect series in that amount of time. In double that amount of time. Most of us put TEN times that amount of time in each game in the series. When you spend, literally, hundreds of hours invested in a series and the ending is as disappointing as it was, you are actually a little entitled to be angry.
As far as ME1 never coming to the PS3 you keep reminding people of that. And while it would be nice to own the entire trilogy on one system we have to be thankful we got it at all. And not just a sloppy handout. They put time and effort into making a prologue that explained the first game for those not lucky enough to play part 1. And those of us who played the first game could at least bring our main decisions over into part 2. I was ecstatic that I didn't have to rely on my 360 anymore for this series as I lost all my gamesaves from part 1 and an almost complete gamesave from part 2 when my Xbox red ringed about halfway through my playthrough of part 2. I would've had to restart the entire series over again if it had not come out on the PS3. I own my 360 for Halo, Gears, Fable and Alan Wake and was very happy to not have to rely on that system anymore for Mass Effect. I still have part 1 and can replay it anytime. But I think I'd rather just move on and finally play and enjoy 3 now that this issue will be behind us.
Lastly "who pays attention to books"? Well that would be the fans of the series who believe it to be one of the greatest game franchises of all time. People who enjoy the games so much that they want more of the universe. Maybe people who want more Mass Effect while they're at work or school and can't be playing. The people who pay attention to the books (comic or novels) are the people who wanted to invest as much time into something they love and enjoy. And when the company that made the games, makes a point of saying that the comics and novels are part of the universe then they shouldn't be the ones to go back and contradict those same comics or novels.
Take care.

I wonder if they are going to apply Moore's microtransaction scheme to this… Charge US$60 for the base game then another 2 bucks for each cut scene/extended scene…
