Okay, you may have heard the unfortunate news that Grasshopper Manufacture's latest, Lollipop Chainsaw , is only four hours in length.
As soon as I saw the headline, I was 99% sure it was crap. That certainty arose from two very distinct reasons, and they should be conveyed to the gaming public for the purpose of clarification and, let's face it, reality. Reality is good .
Firstly, the media has a history of saying games are a lot shorter than they really are. I still remember when everyone was saying Heavenly Sword was only five hours long. Later, after spending more than double that amount of time with the game (and no, I didn't replay it; I didn't even replay any stages), I wondered where the number "5" came from. Then I started to notice that it was happening constantly. If a game was really 7-8 hours for normal gamers who play at a normal pace, you'll see some headline somewhere saying the game is only 4 or 5 hours. And of course, that kicks off a lot of backlash.
It doesn't help that critics often have to speed through a game in order to get the review done, thereby skewing the number in question. Personally, I hate doing that and in most cases, I flat-out refuse. Now, the second reason I say the 4-hour news isn't accurate is simply due to personal experience: I won't give away too much, but let's just say that after a solid three hours of play, I'm only on Stage 3 and I have three of the five major bosses remaining. Now unless I can magically take 'em all out in an hour or less – and that seems exceedingly unlikely right now – then once again, the reported length is a gross exaggeration.
I've been known to play slower than most, but I am not going through Lollipop slow. I think I've only died twice and I'm not running around looking for stuff or replaying parts. Oh, and please bear in mind that this article in no way hints at the quality of the title. I'm merely saying you shouldn't believe the 4-hour statement, even if it's feasible that someone could beat the game in that span of time. And be wary of headlines and even critics who give you hour lengths and estimations.
