Cage On Beyond: “Every Single Moment Has Different Gameplay”

Quantic Dream's amazing Beyond: Two Souls blew everyone away at Sony's E3 2012 press conference.

We know accomplished actress Ellen Page will assume the role of Jodie Holmes but today, more information has been revealed.

Holmes' ghostly partner is named Aiden/Iden, and Jodie's supernatural power will grant her various abilities. Now, although we're still not sure how they will be utilized in the gameplay, a brief analysis of the E3 trailer hints at possession and immolation (setting things on fire). The story, as indicated by David Cage, will involve 15 years of Jodie's life, with her spirit companion as her guide and as you might expect, continue on past life into the "beyond." Gotta love the philosophical bent.

As for the action sequences, those who played Heavy Rain aren't anticipating a third-person shooter. And Cage reinforces that by saying:

"People will be surprised to see how we treat action sequences. I don't think we do it the same way than other studios. We have our own take on this; we keep the cinematography, we keep our specific approach to controls, to make them part of the mimicry, to make you feel like you are the character."

Even more intriguing is when Cage elaborates on the gameplay and control, saying that "every single moment has almost different gameplay." This implies that the entire game won't revolve around QTEs (Quick Time Events), as per their previous projects. There's almost no doubt that QTEs will be involved but Cage is obviously hinting at other mechanics in Beyond . As for the story, nobody is surprised to hear this:

"You'll be really surprised by the story. And there are moments in this game that you've never seen anywhere else, I'm telling you."

The boss goes on to say his studio "didn't make any compromise;" if they had, they probably would've done "Heavy Rain 2," which would've "guaranteed more sales." There will be, however, a heavier emphasis on gameplay in Beyond , so that could be the primary – and most intriguing – difference between the two projects.

Last but not least are the decisions we make. This branching storyline approach was a big part of what made Heavy Rain so fantastic and it's great to see it returning in the new title. Man, we can't wait for this. 'drooling'

This game was exactly what I was waiting to hear about. It made E3 for me really. The Last of Us is my most anticipated game for sure, and GoW looks awesome. But ever since I finished HR I've been waiting to hear about what we know as Beyond: Two Souls. I'm very excited for this game!

Funny considering here's 20 minutes of footage of the game being played. Very QTE heavy. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UHYUL_gA7pw

This game looks amazing. I really wish Sony would re-release Omikron and Fahrenheit/Indigo Prophecy digitally on the PS Store.

The 25 min gameplay video is impressive.

Controlling Iden and spooking people was great, infact, every moment controlling Iden was fantastic. My jaw dropped on the final scene of the 25 min gameplay video.

Maybe that will make these action scenes enjoyable and out of the box.

However, the QTE chase scene completely deflated my astonishment of the Iden opening scene. The QTE scene was only impressive to me because of how it shown off those insane visuals.

Still have a few reservations, but i'm sure i'll be ok once i see some more down tempo, tender scenes and how they're implemented…..and these other gameplay implements Cage is referring to.

So essentially, any and all action can't be emotional and only serves as a detriment to "art"?

At least, that's how every one of your posts read.

Eh?

lol

I believe i complimented how the action scenes were done here due to it's originality to the point where i say my jaw was on the floor (from a scene where you blow up 2 cars and take down a helicopter fyi), something i was worried about considering Cage promises us something to counter the mundane cookie-cutter action heavy games of today….and i mentioned nothing about art.

….Wow.

Maybe opinions aren't allowed that don't match yours? That's how your posts read.

It was merely a question. Also based on how you say Heavy Rain somehow caved to "Hollywood" type flashes at the end, which I don't really get. A question seeking elaboration. That's all.

But then again, every time I simply ask a question, you freak out and claim I can't take other opinions…which has no merit or basis considering the sheer number of posts of competing opinions that I never address.

Maybe it's just you. Maybe it's just that I can predict every word you type, and I'm waiting to see something new that isn't insanely egotistical and/or confrontational.

*sigh*

Here we go again.

You know your reply had a mocking incentive.

Heavy Rain did get kind of ridiculous and hollywood towards the end, what, Shelby bustin up in a powerful man's mansion shooting all his henchmen like he's John McClain isn't ridiculous?

No one freaked out.

Lastly, i could use that last sentence about you.

If you can't be……erm……a site administrator and debate sensibly with me, i would advise not to bother. I want to post opinions without the nonsense if that's possible. If you can't appreciate anything about me, just appreciate im still a customer after all the crap.

People people people, just because you are using buttons and joystick action "in time" with your character doesn't make it a QTE. If you played Heavy Rain you'd have noted that every effort was made to make sure that what you pressed and when was lockstep with logical placement. Pressing "X" to make sure Kratos doesn't fall off a Titan is a QTE. These are more precise.
