You know, it seems like people really enjoy being heard.

We've received a pretty decent response to our So You Think You Can Review Video Games user review contest, so we figure we'll continue to cater to the gaming community.

How many of you have typed up your in-depth analysis of the E3 2012 press conferences and posted 'em up in your favorite forums? About ten trillion, we would presume. Well, if you think you've written a professional, accurate, and interesting analysis of the Big 3's conferences, we'd like to see it. If it's well done, we'll post it up as a guest feature editorial.

No prizes besides publication for this, but if you're looking for goodies, you should check out the available prizes for that user review contest. We're currently selecting a new winner for round two (check the poll to the right of the main page), but we're always accepting submissions, which will be eligible for future rounds. Also, and this should go without saying- No freaking out and swearing and flaming in your E3 breakdown. That might fly on message boards but not in gaming journalism…as lax as it so often is.

Personally I thought all the press conferences were weak this year. I enjoyed Sony's the most, but I would have preferred to see more exclusive games and less exclusive dlc.

I think exclusive timed dlc is the wrong way to win people over. No one is going to buy a game for a system because the dlc comes out a week early.

Give me exclusive games I can't live without and I'll own that console.

They were all lacking this year but I thought Sony's was the best. Had the best games, graphics and showed new IP's. Beyond, God of War Acention and The Last of Us are all day ones for me. The book looks like it would be a fun toy for my daughters. Not sure why people were hating on it. I like the cross comparability with Assassin's Creed III PS3/Vita. Now I'm conflicted. Do I get ACIII for PS3 or Wii U? Hmmm!

Nintendos was fun but was lacking. Was hoping to see some core games we didn't already know about as well as some core Nintendo franchises like Starfox and Metroid. Pikman 3 looks great as well as some of the party software and Wii U gamepad features. Arkhem City Armored Edition looks to exploit what the Wii U can do. Can't wait to see how Nintendo exploits their own system.

Micrsosoft….LOL! Just give up already. Seriously. When you have some of your exhibitors(Tray Parker and Matt Stone) clowning on your silly and failed attempt to show up Nintendo's and Sony's duel screen features that should be a sign you're heading in the wrong direction. What a pointless service/feature. So Microsoft wants people to use SmartGlass to control Internet Explorer on their TV via their tablet? Why not just use the tablet itself? Shameful attempt to copy Nintendo and Apple. Does Microsoft ever come up with original ideas?

Last year Ninty just had tech demos of the Wii U capabilities, did they show the actual physical system working this time with games and what it will do and specs or anything?

Jawknee

Yea, they showed a few demos. We certainly got a better understanding of exactly what to expect when it launches. Ubisoft looks like they are going all out in their Wii U support. Rocksteady seems to have the hang of the system too. The new features in Batman will likely get me to pick it up again. It was also confirmed that the system can now support two Wii U gamepad(tablet controllers) at the same time. Only catch is it will cut the games frame rate in half. Which is both bad news and good news. The good news being with this information, we can assume most games will run at 60fps with one controller. Bad news is that you will have to deal with 30fps(which is fine with me since I don't care much if the frame rate is 30fps as long as it doesn't dip below that) if you want two tablets. It was also confirmed that Nintendo Virtual Console games purchased on your Wii will be 100% transferable to the Wii U. Something that is long over due when it comes to Nintendo. As of now you can't even transfer your Virtual Console games to a second Wii without calling Nintendo and asking them to allow the transfer.

Here are some of the confirmed specs:

Weight
Approximately 3.41 pounds (1.5 kg).

Size
Approximately 1.8 inches high, 10.5 inches deep and 6.8 inches long.

Wii U GamePad
The Wii U GamePadâ„¢ controller removes the traditional barriers between games, players and the TV by creating a second window into the video game world. It incorporates a 6.2-inch, 16:9 aspect ratio LCD touch screen, as well as traditional button controls and two analog sticks. Inputs include a +Control Pad, L/R sticks, L/R stick buttons, A/B/X/Y buttons, L/R buttons, ZL/ZR buttons, Power button, HOME button, -/SELECT button, +/START button, and TV CONTROL button. The GamePad also includes motion control (powered by an accelerometer, gyroscope and geomagnetic sensor), a front-facing camera, a microphone, stereo speakers, rumble features, a sensor bar, an included stylus and support for Near Field Communication (NFC) functionality. It is powered by a rechargeable lithium-ion battery and weighs approximately 1.1 pounds (500 g).

Video Output
Supports 1080p, 1080i, 720p, 480p and 480i. Compatible cables include HDMI, Wii D-Terminal, Wii Component Video, Wii RGB, Wii S-Video Stereo AV and Wii AV

GPU
AMD Radeonâ„¢-based High Definition GPU.

Storage
Wii U uses an internal flash memory. It also supports SD memory cards and external USB storage.

Media
Wii U and Wii optical discs.

Networking
Wii U can access the Internet via wireless (IEEE 802.11b/g/n) connection. The console features four USB 2.0 connectors – two in the front and two in the rear – that support Wii LAN Adapters.

Wii Compatibility
Nearly all Wii software and accessories can be used with Wii U.

Audio Output
Uses six-channel PCM linear output via HDMI® connector, or analog output via the AV Multi Out connector.

My only problem with this list is the storage. Nintendo really should go the Sony route and allow us to install an internal HDD rather than forcing us to depend on external storge and memory cards.

Id have a hard time investing into games like Mass Effect, Assassin;s Creed, Batman, and Tekken on Wii U just for the sake I know those franchise will move away with the new generation of consoles delivered by Sony and MS. It's like, "here, see, your "hardcore" third party games. here's your hardcore xbox controller. buy into us now, but ignore the fact you shouldn't expect Mass Effect 4, Tekken 7, Batman 3, or AC4 on our hardware in the coming years."

I guess it's cool for those who want to side step the norm of playing this gen's games with an interesting controller approach, but i'd imagine much of the crowd that's left Nintendo's boat realized, whether they knew it or not, that game play alone isnt the motivator in playing video games. Nintendo may be masters of fundamentally sound game design principles but outside of Metroid and sometimes flirt with broadening the expression of the form in Zelda, much of what I see from them can be described as retooled and reconfigured. Nintendo software published on their hardware seems to me like retold experiences from the past several centuries or more that serve first as vehicles to the interface. Come play our new Mario game, the game you've played for many decades now, but now do it with a d-pad, analog stick, touch screen, and motion device and with 4 players in glassesless 3d.

Sorry, Im being hard on the old chaps 😉

Ha, no problem, I agree Temji. I like that about them. They are masterful at what they do. Sony delivers my other gaming needs. New IP's,bmature games and stellar graphics. While I can indulge in a more innocent side of gaming with Nintendo.

No problem Fane. 🙂

I thought they were all average at best. Not enough games. I mean the ones they showed off were fantastic. Beyond stole the show for me. The Last of Us was great but Beyond was just utterly fantastic. It also helps that I'm a huge Ellen Page fan. Betwwen those 2 games people may really start to take video games as a serious entertainment medium.

I have to say I honestly think that the reason not many games were shown off was because they are prepping for next gen. As much as I know some of you don't want it. It's probably coming sooner than you think. Just watch. Around when the Wii U is about to release Microsoft and Sony will start having major "leaks" about their next consoles.

I was a little surprised MS didn't announce a new console this year!! They badly need one!

Nothing really impressed me this year, just like the last few years. However, the biggest surprise for me was the tech demo for Square/Enix's new Final Fantasy engine that was revealed. Currently it's being run in DirectX 11 so it's PC only, but is possibly being developed for next gen consoles as well and it's realtime footage, and puts today's cinematics to shame. Watch Dogs, and Tomb Raider, are also must buys judging from the footage. ZombieU looked very interesting. Hawken, Simcity, Arma 3, Company of Heroes 2, Metro, Mechwarrior Online, Crysis 3, Elder Scrolls Online, NHL 13, and Dishonored wrap up my most likes for this year so far. May add Star Wars 1313 to that list, but I haven't seen the footage of it yet.

Beyond and the Last of Us have incredible graphics, but the next-gen looking stuff leaking out is really amazing!!

There were some interesting moments in an overall dull set of major E3 conferences. Nintendo had a couple of interesting moments, though, I'll definitely be more curious to see if I get a chance to get my hands on a Wii-U demo on Thursday to check out gameplay. They had a couple of possibly fun announcements, but nothing that grabbed me by the cojones. Sadly, the presentation itself was one of the dullest E3 presentations I can remember seeing.

Sony was top for me. It was maybe a 7/10. Some really exciting exclusives coming up — which is why I'm a fervent Playstation fan in the first place — and I'm glad to see they haven't abandoned that base and drive for innovation and sophistication in gaming. The presentation dragged a bit with the Book of Magic reading-program…thing, but I appreciate what their objective especially since I am not even remotely the target audience. Beyond looks insane, and I can't contain my excitement for The Last of Us. I wish there had been a bit more for the Vita. I love mine, but getting immediate PS1 and PS2 support and a few more games announced / highlighted would have been spectacular. Really, just dipping into the console at all would have been a step in the right direction at this point.

Microsoft was the ultimate fail for an electronics gaming convention. Not much about gaming aside from the usual (though very well received and acclaimed) sequels to established exclusive IPs. Some of the most ridiculous and random bullsh*tting I've ever heard, i.e. XBox 360 being the best selling console in the world (I believe numbers still tilt heavily in Nintendo's favor). I'm glad that Matt and Trey ripped on the ridiculousness of Microsoft's asinine multimedia Smartglass thing. Problem being, if I want to watch videos — I've got netflix on my iphone, ipad, laptop, ps3, and television – why would I want to pay them for an extra device so to do the same thing, only laden and Microsoft's less than exceptional architecture. Most of the other connectivity stuff – calendars/contacts/music works far better between my Mac, my iphone, and anything by Google. I'll be goddamned before I ever Bing anything, Internet Explorer is the internet browser people use to find a better web browser, and I'll need Windows 8 so I can play PC games when 7 is eventually phased out… that's all it will ever accomplish. Find that annoyingly off-topic in the sense of a video game conference review? Good. I found it annoying in the context of what was supposed to be a video game division's presentation. 3/10 Microsoft, and I should take off a point for Usher, but South Park balanced you out.

Agree on many counts there.

I honestly thought Ubisoft's conference was the best as it had the most surprises, like Rayman Legends looking AND sounding awesome, but Watch Dogs clearly stole the show!!

Of the big 3, Sony was the clear winner, closely followed by Nintendo. Too much reliance on New Super Mario Bros, while PS3 has Beyond and The Last of Us. MS was just fail, on nearly all fronts. Halo looks really good, but it's still just another Halo to me. I'm starting to feel that way about God of War as well. Thankfully there hasn't been a new or reskinned God of War released every year for the last 4 years like Halo has been doing. God of War Ascension looks like more of the same in the story, but at least Sony haven't milked God of War like MS has milked Halo.

Thank God of War for that!!!

It was definitely interesting to watch all 3. I was somewhat disappointed with Sony and their long emphasis on the storybook, so that definitely lowered a great conference. I'd definitely agree with Dancemachine on Ubisoft's conference. I wasn't expecting to enjoy it that much, but they definitely showed a lot of entertaining items and got me excited for Watch Dogs and AC 3.

I don't understand why developers like Activision don't have their own presentations – allowing Microsoft to hijack BLOPS 2 like it was an xbox exclusive is criminal and a pretty pathetic attempt by Microsoft to hide the fact that apart from Halo 4 – they have nothing this year.

they showed off some really cool XBLA games too, deadlight looks SO cool!
Accend new gods looks really good too, and that castle destroying game looked really cool shame its kinect only!
for once M$ actually has more exclusives than $ony this year!

Don't forget Beyond and The Last of Us Underscore!! Nor Assassin's Creed Liberation on Vita!! Or the Wonderbook!!

MS showed their best, their 4 major exclusive franchises, 3 XBL exclusive games, Smartglass, Internet Explorer on 360…

Okay, so game-wise, MS were pretty crap. But they are hitting all the right buttons for dominance of online service and the 360 being used as an entertainment box rather than just a gaming box. True, right?

how can you say game wise they were crap?

Ubisoft

EA
That's my opinion on who had the best conference. Sony spent to much time on wonderbook where they should had spent it on more ps vita games like soul sacrifice or more ps3 exclusives like Ni no kuni. Nintendo didn't wow me with the wii u. The zombie game and lego city was the only thing good thing. The rest was multiplats and that nintendo land witch is probably just a tech demo game. MS was doing the usual. Wasn't GTA V supposed to show up with exclusive content ;). EA was mostly dlc and some new games. Ubisoft wow me the most with watch dogs, rayman legends, and ac3. Sucks there wasn't any new rpgs.

Agree with that order. Ubisoft was the best.

A keen observation from many in the industry. So many games are now copying Uncharted through blending cinematic cutscenes and cinematic action gameplay. I hope you like big blockbuster action games!!

Shame about the lack of RPG's though.

Looks like a lot of games are getting the Uncharted treatment. Not a bad thing, but I'm afraid that the industry will go stale very quickly in this route. Thank God for Ubisoft's Rayman Legends and Watch Dogs!!

Of the big-3, I'd hand it to Nintendo. They had the most cohesive presentation, showed a wide range of games and made it clear(er) what the point is to having the tablet controller. They kept things moving, showed games and it never got boring. Although the presentation for the NewWiiFitU+, or whatever they're calling the balance board these days, was downright hilarious, along with the dance troupe.

Sony could have stolen the show if they hadn't let Ubisoft chew away half their presentation. The entire Wonderbook segment was ridiculously unnecessary. As I alluded to in the other article, they should have put a more diverse lineup on display, including something that isn't at the polar ends of vanilla kids/family stuff and blood-soaked f-bomb bonanza. Beyond was something (although I'm tepid about it due to ghost stories being extremely stupid–more details might change my mind), but I wanted to see things like Ni no Kuni, Sly 4, more than just a name-drop of Papo & Yo and The Unfinished Swan, Infamous 3(?). Even multiplat stuff like Quantum Conundrum or Lost Planet 3; show those off. There was just nothing in the presentation that got me personally excited, which was the first time that's ever happened to me with Sony.

Dancemachine55
Dancemachine55

How could I forget Ni No Kuni!!! How could Sony forget Ni No Kuni!!!

I guess Sony have decided to give up on us Westerners wanting to see big presentations on RPG's. We're the Uncharted and CoD loving crowd, so Sony delivered.

Wonderbook would've been so much more appealing with just a 1 minute gameplay trailer. A 10 minute long stage demo was unnecessary.

E3 2012 was the best E3 in years.especially for Sony.
Sony E3 2012 Press Conference
Three games I was stunned to see gameplay
First they started with Beyond: Two souls.Which I think will be a instant classic as I saw the trailer and they revealed the actress as ellen page I was stunned at the realism of the motion capture,Jodie Holmes is Ellen Page. The gameplay also I think will be awesome. There are some elements from Quantic Dream's first game " Omnikron :The Nomad Soul" where u can go into anybody and control them.

God of War : Ascension. This game is going to blow us way.I know they didn't show a lot in the demo but trust me they are saving the best for the final game. They have stepped up with the enemy character design, which is a good thing. The Story is what I'm looking forward to.It will be better than God of War 2 & 3 and as good as God of War 1.

The Last of Us, Sony saved the best for last. This game is spectacular in every sense of the word. This game will revolutionize gaming and the survival horror genre.Every kill and blow matters and has a consequence.First of all this game is not Linear. There are multiple ways to finish an objective. The demo on the stage was all guns blazing but it can be completed without alerting any of the enemies.I love the fact that they use persistent health so there is consequence.I also love the fact that they have an inventory,so there is a gameplay of searching for items and ammo in the world. The ending of the demo was epic with a shotgun to the face. It's going to be the game of the year whenever it launches.

Yeah Sony won this E3 hands down because they have more new IP's and more core games to play.

Kiryu,

Sony's was good, The Last of Us, Beyond and God of War Ascension looked amazing, without a doubt!! All 3 games will be a Day 1 purchase for me.

But it was far from their best E3. I feel like E3 2010 was Sony at its best for several reasons.

1. Uncharted 3 announced.
2. Infamous 2 demoed
3. Killzone 3 in 3D
4. PSN hadn't been hacked yet and was hitting its stride!
5. Sorcery demoed – Move finally had a killer app!
6. Sony teaming up with Coca Cola, the biggest brand in the world!!
7. KEVIN BUTLER'S EPIC SPEECH!
8. God of War: Ghost of Sparta for PSP
9. Littlebig Planet 2 demoed
10. Medal of Honor reboot and Dead Space 2 demoed on Sony's stage!!
11. Gabe Newell sucker-punched MS in the crown jewels by appearing on Sony's stage and announcing Portal 2 on PS3 would be the best version on any console!! Surprise!!
12. Twisted Metal reboot!! Surprise!! David Jaffe lied to us, but for good reason!!

Sony's conference this year compared to the extravaganza and mind-blowing surprise that was 2010 is pretty different. This year Sony had the games, but not the surprises, nor the big announcements that E3 2010 had. Good, but not great, at least not as great as 2010 was.

Here's hoping E3 2013 will see Sony back at their A game, like they were in 2010!!

id have to go best was M$, followed by ubisoft, than EA, than ninty, than stone cold dead last $ony.

M$s was by far the best!
simply because everything they showed was interesting and exciting!
they did not have 1 boring uninteresting bit in there!
only slow point was the madden and fifa kinect features, but these were also our first time weve seen the games so they were still exciting!
the smart glass was really cool too!
that is REALLY going to hurt ninty!
there not the only ones that have a screen controller anymore…….

ubisoft was 2nd.
it was good but they wasted too much time on the stupid annoying arguments between the girl presenting the show and the guy back stage.
ubisoft really need to learn how to market games and be a professional company!
they probably think its funny, but its not its REALLY annoying!
their slutty commercials for games like future soldier another perfect example of that.
they need to grow up!
that and the wasted time on just dance 4, and shootermania really spoiled the conference for me.
it was like the other 3 conferences, had its high and its lows.
its yays that was so freaking awesome!
and the la la by baby on the tree top. zzzzzzzzz………..
and they did not deliver on allot of things i was expecting!
they revealed brothers in arms the furious 4 last E3 so where the hell was it this year!?
i really believed we would FINALLY see BG&E2 at their show this year too, especially because of all the resent leaked trailers and rumours!

EAs was pretty disappointing too.
they did not announce a army of two game which i really was expecting and REALLY want!
another game i REALLY wanted to see which was not there was mirrors edge 2!
or at least battlefield bad company 3!
other than that everything i wanted to be there was there.
in some that was good and in others that was bad.
crysis 3 looks OH MY FREAKING GOD SO BLOODY GOOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
that was the good part, the bad part was NFS most wanted 2 looks NOTHING like most wanted!
looks more like NFS hot pursuit 2!
and dead space 3, well that looks allot more like lost planet 2!
gotta love it how publishers listen to fans!
dead space 2 was allot more action game and far less survival horror than the original, and they got ripped a new hole for it!
so to fix that problem and make fans happy were going to make it even more of a mindless shooter!
thanks EA for taking one of the VERY few horror games left, and doing what everyone else has done, turn it into a mindless action game!
thank you oh so very much!!!!!!!!!!!!!

nintys was a MASSIVE disappointment!
i was expecting detailed hardware notes, a rough price prediction and a more precise launch window than holiday.
not to mention all the games you would expect from the company, all of them but one was absent!
and even that was a massive let down!
super mario galaxy 3 should be the launch title, not super mario brothers u!

last but not least $ony by far THE WEAKEST show of all!
wheres the last guardian?
the game has been in development for SEVEN FREAKING YEARS FOR CRYING OUT LOUD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i swear to god by the time the last guardian releases man is going to be living on pluto!
wheres the new game GG are working on?
wheres the new game SP are working on?
wheres the new game MM are working on?
$ony has BY FAR the most first party studios, so how can they possibly announce the fewest first party games?
some how they managed!
$ony has BY FAR the fewest first party games releasing this year!
i cant believe im saying this but freaking M$ is releasing more exclusives than $ony this year!
which was exactly why i was so excited for E3 because i truly believed $ony would come out and change that!

that was the first disappointment, they really did not announce many new games! 1 wow 1 thats so many from a studio which owns so many studios!
this is E3! come on you cant go to E3 and announce just one game!
second problem was typical $ony.
Whipping it out and getting the ruler out.
oh look at us were so good we have sold this many of this, have this many users, blah blah blah!
guess what $ony.
NO ONE CARES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
NO ONE travelled across the world to hear that!
NO ONE got up at the wee hours of the morning to hear that!
i only had 3 hours sleep that day i got up super early just so i could watch their conference thats how excited for it i was! and for what!?
so there was the waste of time, then there was the disappointment of so few games showing up, then there was the disappointment of how short what did turn up was.
the last of us and GOW were freaking amazing, but they were so god dam short!
they dedicate so much more time to that crappy book of spells game than what they gave naughty dog, the best developer in existance!
thats like saying ok jesus you have 2 minutes to address the world.
than ok son no one has ever heard of you before, no one cares about you, so will give you 10 minutes!
surely ND deserves more time than a freaking crappy kids game!

in conclusion M$ did the best because they did not have any boring parts.
ubisoft came second because they had by far the most amazing games of the show! but had many boring parts.
EA 3rd because while the games they showed dont look like what they should, they still look freaking awesome!
dead space 3 for instance looks nothing like a dead space game, but my god it did look good!
ninty came 4th, simply because they did not show many games, and what little they did show was not what they should of!
super mario brothers U for instance, why the hell would you have that as a launch title for mario over super mario galaxy?
whish would show off the graphical power and screen controller better?
EXACTLY!

$ony dead stone cold last simply because of the sausage measuring, and wheres all the games they should be showing?
wheres agent?
officially dead im saying, its been what 3 years since it was announced!?
the last guardian has been in development for as i said SEVEN FREAKING YEARS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
wheres syphon filter?
COME ON WE NEED A NEW SYPHON FILTER GAME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
wheres the new game SP are working on?
wheres the new game GG are working on?
ect, ect.
and what was shown was either boring crap like the book of spells crap, and what little was left, the good stuff that should of been there, was so dam short!

You just love controversy and stirring the hornet's nest around here, don't you underscore.

MS was the most sensible, and it was better than EA in some regards. Personally, I have little interest in Halo 4, it feels like more of the same, and it's been milked to no end by MS. Forza Horizon could be good, but it's no major Forza installment.
The new Gears of War is a spin-off, a prequel if you will. But not a new IP. Fable Journey is for Kinect, so therefore core gamers and fans of the first 2 have been put off by it.
There were only 3 new IP's announced and a new integrated tablet and phone service to go with the 360. That really was about it.

MS didn't really wow me, not like Ubisoft did with Rayman Legends and Watch Dogs, or Sony did with Beyond, God of War Ascension and The Last of Us. Nearly everyone had a new major IP except MS.

Your opinion is your opinion, and I respect that…

… it's just wrong. 😛

how is smart glass sensible!?
NO ONE has released ANYTHING like it before!
im really looking forward to gears, tod said that its not a scripted event like the series has been its allot more open and about the gameplay and level design.
sounds fantastic to me!
since when do prequels and not new IPs mean a games bad?
i dont see anyone complaining about GOWA!
also its funny how people say eh i dont care about halo 4 its more of the same.
and GOWA is not?
disregarding MP GOWA is EXACTLY the same as GOW3!
and thats how it should be!
forza not a major instalment?
its the first time the series is going open world, and thats not a major instalment?
it looks freaking awesome!
how many other open world games are releasing this year?
NFS MW and thats about it!

M$ were the only ones that did not waste time on boring BS!
they said ok this is E3 we show our A game, and only our A game!
and they did exactly that!
$ony and everyone else was a mixed bag, they brought a big of the amazing, a bit of the ok, and a bit of the why the &^%$ are you wasting your and peoples time with this sh*t!
i would of liked to see alan wake 2 which remedy announced a few hours before M$s conference that they are working on it so i was dumbfounded it was not there!
would of been nice to see some more on the crytek game ryse, but apparently thats been delayed to next gen so.
but besides that M$s show was flawless!
unlike everyone elses.
M$ was the only one who managed to keep my attention, every one elses i was skipping though the videos to get to the good parts.
M$ conference was the only one i did not skip a second!

Maybe the 1st party Sony studios you mentioned that did not show games are working on PS4 games? LG and Agent, I agree with you. I think Agent is probably dead. LG, they should just release on PS4. My belief is that the PS3 is not powerful enough to fully realize the vision that Mr. Ueda has for this game.
