In only a few minutes time, there will be a live streaming Q&A concerning Sony's fantastic new PS3 exclusive, God of War: Ascension .

But we've also got the official press release from SCEA as well. Confirmed as a prequel, the new GoW will boast "epic cinematic storytelling, visceral battles, and blockbuster moments." We can also expect a few improvements, including a "revamped combat system and a brand new online multiplayer mode that combines the brutal gameplay and large-scale battles that God of War is known for to create a competitive experience like never before."

Said Sony Santa Monica Game Director Todd Papy:

"The bar has been set quite high for this franchise as each God of War title succeeds in being better than the last. But, unlike previous releases, we're providing a deeper look into Kratos' tormented past and psyche that fans have not seen before. Combined with refined gameplay, jaw-dropping visuals, and a fresh twist on competitive gaming with our new online multiplayer mode, I guarantee that God of War: Ascension will give fans what they have been eagerly waiting for, and much more."

So yes, for the first time ever in the franchise, multiplayer will be part of the package. It will feature up to 8 players and a variety of modes, along with customizable avatar warriors with a wide range of weapons and armor. Other interesting parts of the press release included the "promptless mini-games" along with "fluid, life-like characters" and "world-changing scenarios." "Epic" has never been a problem with GoW.

As for the story, Kratos must find a way to break the blood oath that binds him to Ares. After being tricked into killing his wife and child, Kratos is sentenced to a life of madness with the Furies, locked away in a gigantic prison for the living damned. Kratos must battle his own insanity and "mythology's darkest creatures," all the while solving "intricate puzzles," if he wishes to finally gain redemption. So prepare for quite the adventure!

As a long time GoW fan I'm actually looking forward to the multiplayer. It sounds well thought out, and like it requires team work for success.

Plus I'm a sucker for online games that let you customize your character ^_^'

Got chills when i read this. This is probably my most anticipated title at the moment aside from Dishonored, Bioshock Infinite and DmC. I just know this is going to be amazing and i hope the multiplayer is fun. I'm sure it will be. I was worried at first about the story and all but this sounds amazing. Can't wait!!! Now, if only we had a release date…

I'm sold. I was previously bummed it was another prequel, but this sounds awesome. I wonder if these "large scale battles" (and multiplayer) will be more like the battles from the movie 300. Thats what I hope anyway.

Indeed kratos thinks of his spear & shield to be as much apart of himself as his own beating heart!!

Me like what im hearing! May be the best God of war yet. Good to know there are promising AAA exclusives still coming out for the ps3. Cant say the same for the 360.

If any of you have a chance to watch the Ustream, I highly recommend heading over there now. The game looks fantastic. They're showing of a team-based spartan battle right now against a cyclops.

Blood and ashes! all they are doing is talking and showing GOWIII right now. Not worth sitting through.

Sounds amazing! I am good with the MP addition as long as it doesn't hinder the epic nature that is the single player. If you don't want MP just don't play it. Otherwise it adds a lot to the package with massive replay value.

I agree with that statement. People always complain when they add multiplayer to a single player-only franchise, claiming it takes time and resources away from the single player…but Santa Monica studios is one of the developers I trust can appease both fans. It seems like they are keeping the two modes seperate as Kratos apparently won't even be in the MP

Have'nt seen the any gameplay clips but i'm hoping for a complete overhaul.
After 5 hack n slash games i'd like an over the shoulder camera view, epic spartan warrior simulator with lots of persians to send to the after life…..or whatever the devs come up with….i'll buy it either way.

Oh dear God here comes the multiplayer and story tampering. Kratos deserves so much better. I'll pick it up cheap.

I'm so glad I don't take games that seriously. Is it fun? That's all I care about, and from that video, that multiplayer looks like a blast, and I don't play multiplayer.

Plus, is it just me? Or does that cyclops look amazing?

I have to take all $60 purchases somewhat seriously. I understand that some people don't have to.

As long as it gives us something about III's ending I am happy.

I don't like the addition of multiplayer. I hope that it doesn't detract from the singleplayer experience in any way.

It could be fun of course, but I have always felt god of war was about rich and brutally beautiful adventures through mythology.

I hope this multiplayer can keep some fans instead of being a throwaway like Bioshock 2.

As usual I'm very excited for a new GoW installment. They never fail to impress.

As long as they're not in your face with with the multiplayer and I can just pretend it's not there, I'm indifferent to them adding it. I wont play it. (I'll be sad that I wont be platinum'ing this one though, oh well)

I might say I'm a little concerned over this "revamped combat system". Hopefully they haven't made any drastic changes. The game still needs to play and feel like GoW.

In any case, I have faith in this team and I'm sure they'll deliver. Bring it on!
