It was a fight to the finish but in the end, the Detroit Lions finally get a player on the cover of a Madden game.
Nearly 20 million votes were tallied during this year's ESPN fan vote for the new cover athlete, and in the end, Detroit wide receiver Calvin Johnson pulled out the win, just beating Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton.
It has been one hell of a year for "Megatron." He signed an 8-year deal with the Lions that could be worth up to $132 million, which makes him the highest paid player in the NFL. And now he lands on the cover of Madden NFL 13 , which is quite the honor and well-deserved. Of course, Detroit fans are hoping the "Madden Curse" doesn't totally ruin their 2012 campaign; if Johnson is hurt, that means the team's chances at a playoff run are, for all intents and purposes, shot. But hey, that curse is just a bunch of hooey, right? …right?
Well, just stay healthy, Cal.
