There could be so many things wrong with this…and yet, it's just so worth discussing.
In general, retailers have to have a tentative release date in order to take pre-orders for any given title. Sometimes, the date is nothing more than a placeholder but currently, as far as we know, retailers don't even have that for God of War IV .
IGN reader Tyla Daniels has given the Internet food for thought: You can see the screenshot in question right here; it comes from a BT Games location in Johannesburg, South Africa and obviously, it's for the sake of drumming up GoWIV pre-orders. This does make some sense, as many believe the game will be revealed on April 19 .
Still, there are a few problems. Firstly, that logo isn't official and has been floating around for a little while now. Secondly, the box says it's a "shooter," which either means Sony made a gargantuan mistake and turned the revered franchise into a FPS, or it's just an error made by the retailer. We're going to have to assume it's the latter. Then again, maybe the whole thing is just a fabrication, which isn't out of the realm of possibility.
Well, we don't have much longer to wait, as April 19 looms large. That's presuming the game Sony has to announce really is the fourth God of War but at this point, it seems quite likely. …it just really can't be a shooter.
If GOW IV is a shooter then I will be at an extreme loss for words…. There's no possibly way it could be true. They had to have messed up. But if not… Wow, that'll be a complete sell out. GOW III sold over 4.3 million copies as a PS3 exclusive which is exceptional. Making it a shooter isn't going to help sales!
There's no way this is possible.
I wish GOW IV didn't exist after GOW III's inexplicably bad ending, but if it's gotta happen I really and truly hope it's not a shooter.
I'm gonna have to call minotaur sh*t on this one. Sorry, the bs line was full, but a first cousin should do.
There's no way Sony would turn God of War into a fps. At least not in my fairy tale view of the gaming world.
TPS then?
Yes, its horrific Tes37!

Minotaur sh*t. I lol'd at that.
GOW a shooter lol somebody drop the ball on advertisement.
Since when did a god need a gun to kick arse? I think that's just a mistake. Besides, that logo is just a fan mockup.
Maybe its misleading and the pre order is a scam.
How come some reader at IGN gets full name credit but PSXE member sources only sometimes do?
Anyway, just a mistake there made by whoever was in such a hurry to make the mockup so they could take the orders.
Buuuuuutt… we did hear some time ago that Sony Santa Monica was looking for people experience with vehicle combat so maybe you ride chariots and shoot arrows the whole time…jk.
A lot of times, it's because the person who sent the tip doesn't get full credit; i.e., I saw it online before they sent it.
I dont think getting full name credit should matter, but i guess its tied to self worth or something along those lines
lol, I don't send in tips so don't look at me. I've just noticed people here saying "Hey that's my tip where's my name?"
Ben actually posted one of my humorous articles once so that was honor enough.
karneli lll,
It doesn't have to be about ego or self-worth, etc.
And I for one, actually think it should matter, as it helps just by the fact that you're proud that you've done a small part in helping to keep our PSXE community strong.
At least it does whenever I see my name mentioned.
The whole thing is wrong… absolutely awful, what a scandal!

Ahhahahahahahah!!! Hahahahaha! Seriously BT Games, I thought those game covers looked familiar. Was so shocked and rolling on the floor laughing that a South African game retailer actually made it onto this site, as for the logo and shooter BS, that's just BT Games for you, theyre a bunch of idiots, worked at that exact branch this pic was taken from for like a month.
Although I think PSXextreme has covered something on BT Games before, they were one of the first retailers worldwide to hint at the Jak and Daxter Collection on their release schedule last year think PSXextreme still reported it.
simply a rumor and not conceivable to the least, both the date of release and the type of the game as shooter, impossible to happen, pure rumor I would say…

Ha! That makes my day.
Yes and the next MGS is a dating sim…
That might actually happen.
God of Modern Warfare 4 duh!! >.>
Clever marketing is how i see it. Look at how much publicity its getting. Genius
I love the reactions. Like people actually think something like GoW4 would actually be a shooter.
I also thought those game covers looked familiar. I cant believe BT Games cracked the nod as a source. I didn't even know there were other south africans on here.
Howzit Deusex.
Ben I think you need to do an editorial on South African gaming, you will find a lot more interresting stuff than GOW as a shooter.
Thanks for showing SA some love tho 😉
What city are you from boet?
I lived many years in Durban… the banana boys state!

I'm in Durban right now, have been on the east coast all my life. Where are you now? Its so lekker to see some south africans on here!
Go Sharks!!!
Not actually from South Africa, just lived there for a good portion of my life when my parents immigrating from Italy… anyway, enough time to learn Afrikaans… then moved to London, got into telecommunications consulting. Now I am based in Singapore and a resident of the city state… great place!
Will be heading down to SA in September for a 3 week holiday in Cape Town…. should be good fun, wine, food and some hot totty!

id like to think $ony are not stupid enough to turn one of their most beloved series into a shooter.
but then seeing what they did to playstation move heroes and ape escape to be honest, NOTHING could surprise me!
ha, actually come to think of it a shooter staring the worlds angriest thing could actually be really entertaining!
Remember The Tester 3 episode where those 3 lucky gamers got to play a top secret game at Santa Monica Studios? …well, maybe it was GOW IV… or did they say it was a new IP? …if they did, then THAT'S what they'll reveal on april 19th.
I am sure i'll get 'thumbed down' for this, but i'm going to put a positive spin on the possibility of a GoW shooter.
I'm not sure why it would be a mistake. Is it truly a mistake or is it just that hard to imagine GoW being anything otehr than an action game?
We need to remember that every game needs to take a step in a new direction at some point. If we didn't, we would still see Link in an overhead view, Mario would still be a sidescroller, and we would have never had horses and lasso's in GTA (Think Red Dead Redemption.)
It's also not fair for us to come to these "the sky is falling" conclusions and call it a mistake or say that it is not a good move by Sony's Santa Monica studio. They have made like 5 God of War's so far and they have all been golden and they have earned our trust as customers. I don't think that development team is going to give you a pos like Homeland or Duke Nukem Forever. (No offense to the ones who actually liked those titles :>)
It's gosh darn God of War. If they turned it in to an third person shooter, first person shooter, RPG, adventure or a puzzle game it would still be amazing and fresh. I would love to have a firearm that is equally as awesome as a chainblade, personally.
I say "Give us a good of war shooter" Then go to work on releasing a new, more traditional God of War on the PS4 to coincide with it's release 🙂

I understand and dig your positive outlook on the idea of GoW4 being a shooter however, there is so much wrong with this if it actually is true.
One it just proves that publishers are idiots and are still trying to get part of the Call of Duty pie. This isn't a new direction for anything other than the sake of trying to increase profits.
I personally think this is just a mistake, or more likely a fake picture to get people all worked up.
But seriously there is absolutely NO good reason for GoW4 to be a shooter other than BS corporate shenanigans.
No. Games need to innovate and change, not change genres. That's completely counter-productive and essentially erases the fan base you've created.
You may have noticed what happened when even SLIGHT action elements found their way into Final Fantasy. Turning the franchise into all action would be an unforgivable tragedy for 99% of every fan.
You can innovate in a million different ways within any given genre, including action. To change what the game is for the sake of "new" is utterly ridiculous.
Exactly Ben. I was going to say, they could definitely cook up a bunch of ways to innovate and evolve GoW4 without jumping genres.
Its sad to see the whats happened to the Final Fantasy series. Even more sad that it sold well enough for them to stick with the changes. I wish someone would make a game like DQ8, that was JRPG perfection IMO.
People were mad because metallica slowed down their sound and cut their hair off too. Everyone thought Mariow as just a plumber and hated bowser and loved princesses, but he also enjoyed racing Go-Karts, playing tennis and soccer!
Don't get me wrong, I don't think that Kratos is going to be wearing fatigues and carrying an M4 and I think that would be kinda silly, but nonetheless we should let them make what they want to make, support the artists and trust that Santa Monica makes a good product.
if its a shooter – it will be arrows lol
and some rocks will do fine too lol
If u click full image, theirs evidence that the artwork has been printed out on a color printer using regular white paper.

Alexander thats how we roll in South Africa 😉
Do u guys sell pirated games over there to? Not that I'm interested in buying any. I know some people (not in Africa, further East) that were playing pirated PS2 games (they were conversion US $2.00 and they told me that per disc lasted about a year) on a modded PS2.
Last edited by AcHiLLiA on 4/16/2012 9:52:20 AM
recent rumour going around is that its heavenly sword 2!
but its for the vita not ps3.
🙁
BBBBBBBBBBBBBOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!
figures, $ony finally returns to one of the ps3s best new IPs but its not on the ps3.
sigh.
I'd freak out if that were true.
My whole complaint with handhelds is that they shouldn't get highly demanded games as stand alones. Case in point, Uncharted is my favorite game series ad seeing Uncharted: Golden Abyss, on the vita and not my PS3 more than makes me a little frustrated. At least they brought the GoW games over, but could you imagine those games if they were developed for the PS3 and not the PSP?
I sincerely hope something like that doesnt happen. I don't think it would but…
yeah but portables need their games too.
especially if you want to dispel the stereotype of handhelds only good for angry birds!
you should give golden abyss a try, its freaking amazing!!!!!
no way you would be able to have the same experience on ps3.
id be cool if they made them for both ps3 and vita, but they wont too costly.
oh what i would give to see gravity rush on the ps3 like it was originally meant to!
While I guess it could be real in all likelihood it's just a store-made mock up. The old Electronics Boutique stores did that pretty often — create some half-assed art for unreleased games so you can get a box on the shelves and drum up pre-orders.
I think the "shooter" part is either a store error, or they're, however false, just trying to get more people interesting who normally wouldn't be, in buying into the new GOW.

GOW a shooter HA HA that was the best laugh i've had today and trust me i needed this
I flashed back to this article when I read the current one.
https://temp.psxextreme.com/ps3-news/5886.html
It still seems really unlikely to me but still…
I really hope he was joking when he said he pitched the idea of a GoW shooter.
